As the sole technician for the surface resource office, I performed a wide variety of functions, includingImplemented the initial prescribed fire monitoring scheme for the park. Designed plot location plan, initiated plot database, and installed 20 new brush plots according to NPS RX-80 protocols. Responsible for all plant ID, including grasses. Located 10 old fire effects plots, evaluated their effectiveness, and performed necessary work to bring up to new NPS protocols. Performed bi-annual monitoring of park’s endemic cactus population. Located, photographed, and evaluated ~300 individuals, logged results into park database, and authored periodic report on status of population for USFWS. Completed park research project on prescribed fire effects on endangered endemic cactus Corypantha sneedii. Reviewed prior project data, located and gathered final data on 164 individuals, performed statistical analyses of data, and authored final report on project results. Completed 2 semiannual rounds of park’s Mountain Lion monitoring transects. Learned mountain lion sign ID & habits, transect protocols, and recruited assistants for a 75 Km backcountry transect. Served as crew supervisor for several overnight and multi-day trips. Organized & entered data, performed statistical analyses, and authored final report on population status. Created comprehensive portable field herbariums for use of park staff. Collected and prepared samples of grass and brush species and organized into several notebooks with descriptive indicators.
