Church Finances

:
As you will be aware the Finance Committee regularly review our parochial fi-
nances. We shall be making a Report to the Parish within the next few weeks. Sig-
nificantly we want to thank people for their generosity, and especially for their
most recent efforts.
However, the Diocesan Assessment for 2008 has again leapt up by just under an-
other €2000, making our annual levy €14,000 per year. This is something which is
quite beyond our control at parish level, and is simply laid upon us with a demand
to pay up. The Curial Budget for the current year is set at nearly €2 Million, and
the breakdown of this budget is available for you to look at.
I have posted the relevant pages on our church noticeboard.
Whilst we must support our bishop and the wider diocesan family, it is important
that you see where the resources of the diocese appear to be allocated. It is inap-
propriate for any comment to be made in the context of this newsletter, but there is
a meeting with Bishop Terence at the Cathedral next Tuesday evening, and some
of the laity may wish to question this whole matter more carefully and seek clarifi-
cation.

Altar Servers:
Whilst very young children are brought with lots of joy and enthusiasm to Mass on
a weekly basis, and our children’s liturgy thrives, it is noticeable that we need to
engage the older children in the liturgy. One way of doing this is for them to be-
come altar servers. Two lively young people are hopefully joining us in the near
future, and there is room for many more. I would like to see a strong band of altar
servers, perhaps with an aim to join The Guild of St Stephen, and join with other
altar servers in the Middlesbrough District. We shall certainly need a wider group
of “altar ministers”, perhaps including some adults, who would look to providing a
ministry in and around the Sanctuary. I would like to think that some of the men
and women of the parish might consider this as an extension of their own participa-
tion in the Mass. (Traditionally it has been children, but there is no official age
restrictions). Ideally we need a monthly meeting, and a rota of commitment, to-
gether with opportunities to meet with Fiona Moffatt, the Diocesan Youth Officer.
