Village of Barryton has new president
P IONEER S TAFF W RITER

B Y B RAD K LOSNER

BARRYTON — Residents in the Village of Barryton will see a new face leading the village board. Trustee Deb Buehner was appointed as village president on Wednesday. At the regular Barryton Village Board meeting on Wednesday, former Village President Dick Collins resigned from his position through a correspondence, citing health reasons. Collins has not been attending regular meetings since late November. “The village was fully staffed (during his absence),” said Donna Collins, Barryton Village Treasurer and Dick Collins’ wife. “There was no liability to the community.” Dick Collins was unavailable for comment. Buhener was nominated by trustee Mark Pelong and his motion was seconded by Barryton President Pro Tem Barb Doke, who has been filling the president’s seat

for two months. Village Trustees Steve Mortensen, Don Foreman, Nancy Loll, Pelong and Doke voted in favor of the nomination. Buehner abstained from voting. At the end of Monday’s meeting, Buehner was sworn in as the interim board president by Doke. “She is obviously very qualified to (perform the duties of president),” Barryton Village Clerk Jessica Pelong said. Buehner was slightly hesitant in accepting the nomination to begin with, citing the fact that one of her primary responsibilities is being a full-time teacher in the Chippewa Hills School District. “If I were to accept this, I would do it with the understanding that I need help,” Buehner said. “I will accept it. I’m not willing to let (the seat) sit empty.” Buehner will maintain this position until the November general elections. She said she is unsure whether she will run for the

Collins has sat on the board for more than 12 years. Collins was instrumental in cleaning up the Barryton tire site, as well as leading the board in getting the feasibility study underway, Buehner said. The feasibility study is looking at potential uses for the tire site. “I was excited that we had a hunk of land to plan for,” Buehner said. “(Collins has) done great things for

the village.” Making the feasibility study become a reality for the old tire site is one of the first things that she is going to take care of as president, Buehner said. “We are on the brink of something big with this study,” Buehner said. “We need to move forward.”
