Surgeon General
Do you know about the benefits of the new Veteran Choice
Program? Veterans have the option of using this new access to health
care program. This program allows Veterans easier access to care at
non-VA Health care facilities within their community reducing the
appointment wait time and driving time to the appointment. As
Veterans age, services need to be more convenient and closer to
home. According to the information on va.gov, "if you have been told
by your local VA medical facility that you will need to wait more than
30 days from your preferred date or the date medically determined by
your physician; your current residence is more than 40 miles from the
closest VA health care facility; you need to travel by plane or boat to
the VA medical facility closest to your home, you face an unusual or
excessive burden in traveling to a VA medical facility based on the
presence of a body of water (including moving water and still water) or
a geologic formation that cannot be crossed by road," then the
Veteran Choice Program is authorized and you can receive a Choice
Card. Non-VA care is only covered by VA for medical needs which
have been approved by your VA physician. The VA can schedule an
appointment for other medical needs, but they can only cover the cost
of care related to your VA-approved health needs. Call the VA at 866606-8198 to set up an appointment at a non-VA health care facility
and they will work with you to ensure you are approved for care in
your community.

Service Officer Report

This last month has had some interesting problems for the
Service Officer. I gave out three applications for in-home care givers.
This program provides a cash grant to Veterans who cannot do their
own housekeeping and domestic tasks. There are a number of
conditions to qualify. As we all get older, however, I think may more of
us will be interested in this benefit. Feel free to ask me about it
As ever I had cases of applications for survivors benefits, health
care and requests for records. O a personal note, I wish to extend
condolences to Billy Wagster on the tragic loss of his wife. Mr.
Wagster is our Yolo County Veteran Service Officer and as such he
has always done an outstanding job for the vets and this county. God
Bless you Sir.

Post History Number 5

From the very beginning there was a tug of war regarding the
location of the Post. One group was from the Broderick/Bryte Area
and the other from West Sacramento. At that time the Bryte/Broderick
population exceeded that of West Sacramento but more Charter
Members were from West Sacramento.
Therefore voting on the issue of location was decided well in
advance of the site the Post is now. This differentiating disagreement
did not go away. Therefore when the first Post-Election of Officers
was held there was a lot of lobbying for candidates. When the votes
were counted, John Sweeney was elected as the first Commander of
our Post and Art Heasley first the Quartermaster. It soon became
apparent that the Canteen Bar needed some full time attention. Up
until now it was on a volunteer basis but sales far outpaced the
growth. By some stroke of luck a retired Army Major, Les McCready
strolled into the Post one day. Les had plenty of business experience
but was not eligible to become a member. The Board selected him to
fill the vacancy and so he became the first Bar Manager. Under his
guidance the Post made money well over expectations. So much
money that Quartermaster Heasley proposed a separate Corporation.
The filing was made and the Post now had the first 'Post Building
Fund'. Money was separated between the Post and the Building
Fund. The Building Fund money was not reported but was set aside
for further expansion. Years later, National closed the loop hole and all
funds had to be combined and all other such Corporations had to be
dissolved. But in the meantime the Post used the Building Fund to
upgrade the hall. Next issue, the saga of the one armed bandits

Do you have an old and tattered flag?? You need a new one???
We can help you can bring in your flag to the Post and have it retired
with the honor and respect that it is due. There will be a ceremony
held in West Sacramento that will be held at a later date, more
information to follow. As well as, if you need a new flag please do not
hesitate to ask.
Thanks to Jean Jones and her wonderful crew as they put on one
magnificent Super Bowl breakfast. They worked their back sides off.
All enjoyed the wonderful food and efforts that were put into it.
The different crews that assist Jeannine with the magic she does
seem to be the same few individuals for the similar type of event time
after time. If you would like to volunteer to be a helper, it would be
lovely to see some new faces around. The same request applies to
our monthly meetings. If you have never been to a meeting, or it has
been a while since you have been back. I would love to have you. A
great deal of information is shared and with each one is sprinkled with
relevant and current material. And it is done in a timely fashion.
A very important note:
Do you like getting the newsletter in a paper form?

Would you rather read it online? The post is trying to gather that
information, in order to cut down the cost of distribution, as cost and
time for preparation has increased. The post will be sending out a
card soon asking each of us if you would like to continue receiving it.
Please read it carefully, and respond if necessary. You are all so very
important, and we hold each and every one of our members near and
dear to us. Your opinion matters. Please make it count.
I will not be in attendance for next months meeting as I will be on
a much needed vacation. Our next meeting will be held on
March 11, 2015.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER:
First thing is to report the death of Walter Smith on February 18,
2015 at the age of 94 years. He and his wife Juanita were married for
73 years. Walter was a member that never missed a meeting. Our
deepest sympathy to his wife and family. We all will miss him.
We have learned that John Combs is very ill and under 24 hour
care and
Marianne Ek is undergoing eye treatments to prevent blindness is
the good eye. We all pray it works.
Betty Alei has serious problems with asthma and is home after a
couple of stays at the hospital. She is very weak and it will take time
to get well.
Some better news to report is that Chuck and Virginia Warner are
feeling better but neither can drive anymore and that means their
home a lot. But they continue to look to the brighter side of life,
something we all should do. Count our Blessings!

IMPORTANT TO OUR LADIES

We have found that the $6.60 we pay yearly for Cancer
Insurance has been of no use to anyone. We would like to
cancel this program as of next year 2015-2016. This year our
Treasurer needs your $6.60 because the insurance is still
current and we need to pay the bill. If there are no objections to
cancelling the insurance we will do so next year. Any questions
please call Sue McMillan at (916) 371-0990.
Love you, Jean Jones
