Measuring any kind of

surface with Leitz Infinity
With Leitz Infinity, the most accurate
3D coordinate measuring machine
in the world, it is now possible to
measure surfaces of any kind. For this
purpose, the optical sensor Precitec
LR (lateral resolution) has been
integrated into the measuring system.
Reflective, refractive, shiny,
transparent and heavily inclined
surfaces pose no challenge for the
Precitec LR. For example the sensor
measures lenses produced by the
optical industry without contact or

LSP-X1h sensor
for CMMs

affecting the workpiece in any

way. Features such as workpiece
dimensions or profiles can be
checked with the Precitec LR. The
sensor has an acceptance angle of
90 40, depending on the surface
characteristics. Thanks to its high
axial resolution, i.e. the ability to
differentiate image points that are
situated behind each other, it can
manage highly complex structures.

After other coordinate measuring

machines (CMM) from Hexagon
Metrology also the GLOBAL
Silver is now available with the LSPX1h sensor. The major feature of this
sensor is its capability to accept
very long styli. Lengths from 20 mm
up to 225 mm thanks to a unique
probe body are possible in the axial
orientation whereas lengths up to 50
mm can be configured in the lateral
orientation. The sensor is used in
conjunction with the indexable probe
head TESASTAR-m which allows
orientating the LSP-X1h in a lot of
directions. Also the small external
diameter of the sensor increases its

ability to reach all required features of

a workpiece which are supposed to be
measured. It is the ideal instrument to
measure features in continuous HighSpeed-Scanning mode or via single
point probing.

Long-term relationships,
made by Hexagon Metrology
Portable measuring arms are designed for use under harsh conditions.
That is why, every once in a while, a check-up can help to ensure that
these high-quality instruments keep in good shape over many years.
Hexagon Metrologys service facilities on all continents help arm
users to keep the long-term relationship with their portable CMM
(and of course other metrology equipment) alive. Measureup presents
some examples of what Hexagon Metrologys 13 service centres
for measuring arms can offer.
1. What: Treating tools like a
partner pays off. Especially
when working together
means being productive
under difficult shop floor conditions.

Where: Hexagon Metrology in

Barcelona, Spain, is the local
service partner for this user.

2. What:
Constantly trained service
professionals carry out certification and calibration. These
procedures guarantee the
highest levels of system accuracy and repeatability over a
long period of time.

3. What: New technology enables measurement tools to be

more productive. But if the time
is not right to say goodbye to the
measuring arm you have used
for a long time, why not revitalize
it with a software update or new
hardware components?
Where: Hexagon Metrologys
service technicians based in
Montoire, France, updated the
software in this measurement
system.
4. What: Unusual, but not
impossible: The user had modified their measurement arm for
underwater use.
Where: Hexagon Metrology in
Oceanside California, USA was
able to calibrate the customer's
heavily modified arm to original
specifications.

5. What: A short moment of

inattention, something hits
the arm, and a small part
must be replaced. Such things
happen under hectic shop
floor conditions, in a portable
measuring arms natural habitat.
To avoid long repair times,
Hexagon Metrologys service
centres have spare parts on
stock locally.

FEATURE

PC-DMIS 2012:
extending a
philosophy

In some respects, both the human psyche

and the world of products follow the
same patterns: there is no opportunity for
growth and development unless feedback
is channelled to the correct recipient.
In the world of products, the PC-DMIS
measuring software by Hexagon Metrology
is a prime example.

sers of the software are in close

daily contact with the developers
of the PC-DMIS measuring
software either in order to ask
for immediate assistance via the
software hotline, when the
PC-DMIS community gets
together at one of the PC-DMIS update seminars,
or when a passionate PC-DMIS user posts in the
online forum.

ClearanceCube

10 MEASUREUP

october 2012

www.hexagonmetrology.com

This exchange of ideas regularly bears fruit.

The most recent result of these exchanges:
PC-DMIS 2012. The updated version of this classic
measuring software delivers over 100 new and
enhanced features based extensively on user
feedback. Measureup presents four new features
which in the future will make measuring with
PC-DMIS easier than ever:

Change Manager

The PC-DMIS
philosophy

Digital prevention
The new ClearanceCube in PC-DMIS
2012 practically works like an invisible
protection shield, which preempts
any potential collision between the
work piece and the measuring probe.
ClearanceCube attaches a protective
virtual envelope around the part
being measured and guides the probe
to avoid that area. The software
automatically completes all safety
moves so the operator can simply
box-select a group of features, then
use the Path Optimizer feature to
determine the most effective path.
Most importantly, the ClearanceCube
is assigned to the selected feature, not
the plan, which simplifies additions
and changes to the inspection routine.

Automatic adaptation
Change is inevitable. Better to have
measurement software that not only
embraces change but does it automatically. When inspection data is imported
into CAD, PC-DMIS 2012 has the ability
to remember the current translation of
assembled components, so the CAD file
does not need to be repositioned. Revi-

sions to the CAD file prompt the Change

Manager to highlight those design
changes automatically.

Fast finding
Sortable Features is another addition
to the user interface of PC-DMIS 2012.
It provides a fast and easy way
to search features by ID, type,
program sequence or time in various
dialog boxes.

Easy interpretation
PC-DMIS 2012 is revolutionizing data
delivery again with the introduction
of SmartText. SmartText in Summary
Mode allows operators to quickly
realize dimensional compliance
through color-coded and symbolic
text. Time spent sorting through an
inspection report is avoided.

More than twenty years

ago the PC-DMIS EMS
philosophy was born
with a simple concept:
parts designed in CAD
systems ought to be
inspected to the original
CAD models. The idea of
inspecting to CAD on a
CMM took shape. Today,
PC-DMIS Enterprise
Metrology Solutions
(EMS) encompasses
multiple interconnected
software packages that
assist with dimensional
quality control at every
stage from design
through production.

COVER FEATURE

SHAPING
CHANGE WITH
HEXAGON
METROLOGY
Hexagon Metrology has decided
lately to align its corporate design
more closely with its parent company,
Hexagon. The rebranding goes along
with the launch of a new logo, new
corporate colours, new fonts; put
simply: everything which makes up the
companys face to the outside and the
inside. Measureup has spoken to
Norbert Hanke, President Hexagon
Metrology, in his office in London to
find out more about the companys new
visual identity and the strategy behind
it.

mu: What is the main objective of the

new brand strategy?

mu: Norbert, what are the reasons for

rebranding Hexagon Metrology?

mu: If you would put Hexagon Metrology

in a nutshell, what would be in there?

For the last 10 years, Hexagon

Metrology has been continuously
shaping change, acquiring a number
of brands, companies and know-how
that have been integrated successfully into the business. During this
phase Hexagon Metrology transitioned
from being the company to the main
brand that our audiences relate to
be it customers, suppliers, partners
or employees. The updated strategy
takes this point into account and
positions Hexagon Metrology as the
primary go-to-market brand.

Boiled down to its pure essence it would

be services, sensors, software, solutions and sectors. I also refer to this as
the Hexagon Metrology DNA. We have
more than 70 Precision Centers around
the world for service and support, a
vast array of sensor technologies and
different software packages to manage
measurement data. All in all we offer
complete solutions dedicated to certain
sectors, for example the automotive
and the aerospace industry.

16 MEASUREUP

october 2012

We are now able to provide an image

which truly reflects what Hexagon
Metrology is: a contemporary and dynamic high-tech company deeply rooted
in innovation. Our new identity is an affirmation of our continued commitment
to helping customers reinvent today,
outpace change and solve problems for
tomorrow. With the rebranding we also
showcase the unity and shared commitment to our parent company Hexagon.

www.hexagonmetrology.com

mu: After being with the company for

many years what does Hexagon
Metrology mean to you personally?
To me Hexagon Metrology stands for
an intercultural and very energetic
working environment. It is great to work
with people having different cultural
backgrounds and histories, both on
the global Hexagon Metrology level but
also on a regional basis. I am very excited about the challenges coming up
in my day-to-day working life reinforcing our values we all firmly believe in.

surveying section at Meyer Werft. Our

surveying instruments are used every
day under harsh conditions in both
indoor and outdoor environments. In
addition to the quality of the instruments, we also recognise the value of
good service and a long-term relationship. It is important that our partners
are still there for us tomorrow, says
Zimmermann. In Leica Geosystems
and Hexagon Metrology, we have
found partners who have never once
disappointed us.

Surveyors are always

involved in the action
The surveying team at Meyer Werft
is on hand to provide its services at
every stage in the production of a new
ship. Alignment of the plasma torch
cutting machines is just one of the
first tasks. Accuracy is also the name
of game when laying keels and fabricating the blocks. On top of this come
a host of other special jobs, such as
determining the overall length of a

ship. Ralph Zimmermann: More and

more parts are being prefabricated and
then attached to the ship in once piece.
For us this means we have to carry
out fairly accurate 3D surveys such
as taking the measurements of a sun
shade composed of multiple concave
shapes or a 260-m-long waterslide
with curves and loops.
The contents of the instrument
locker at Meyer Werft include a
Leica TDRA6000 laser station and
two Leica HDS6200 high-definition
surveying (HDS) laser scanners.
Both instruments are permanently in
use. Ralph Zimmermann: The HDS
scanners and laser station together
form a strong combination. Before we
begin to scan and capture point clouds,
we determine the exact position of the
targets using the Leica TDRA6000 and
create a mesh. Most of the targets
remain as fixed reference points,
some are only temporary. We can then
move the scanner from area to area
and set it going immediately, because
we always know where we are in the
surveyed space. The process is pretty
much like land surveying.

Quality as a competitive
advantage
Zimmermann also wishes to ensure
that the high standard of Meyer ships
will continue to be achieved in the
future and actively promotes the
training of young surveying engineers.
Meyer Werft sees consistent quality as
a key competitive advantage. For this
reason Ralph Zimmermann has been
upgrading surveying equipment and
practices at the shipyard.

METROLOGY'S
MISSION
TO MARS
Errors are not
an option when
it comes to
manufacturing
the largest Mars
rover to date.

little more than eight

months after it took off, the
Mars rover Curiosity safely
landed on the red plant in
the wee hours of August
6. The mission pioneered precision
landing technology and a sky-crane
touchdown to place Curiosity near the
foot of a mountain inside Gale Crater.
During a nearly two-year prime mission,
the rover will investigate whether Mars
has ever offered conditions favorable
for microbial life, including the chemical ingredients for life.
But before it was rocketed into space,
plenty of painstaking planning went
into the making of Curiosity, a sixwheeled, 18,000-pound rover that is
approximately the size of a small car.

22 MEASUREUP

october 2012

In the beginning
The pressure was high at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, Pasadena, CA),
where scientists, engineers and technicians worked evenings and holidays
to design, manufacture and test
the cruise stage and descent stage
instruments and rover for the Mars
Science Laboratory (MSL) project.
Gerald Clark, a senior quality engineer
and leader of quality assurance
inspection services for JPL, says that
the MSL project is a galactic-scale
prototyping operation with tens of
thousands of parts in various stages of
product development. In most cases,
the assigned team made three or less
of any single component for
the project.
The first group of components and
assemblies were used for a variety
of destructive and nondestructive
testing. The second were sent on the
Mars mission. An identical rover stayed
behind in a simulated Mars environment lab, where it is being used to run
through anticipated maneuvers before
they are attempted millions of miles
away on Mars.

Integration is Key
For Clarks lean team to keep up with

the freneticSTORY

job done, it was essential for quality

team members to be specialists
not in measurement equipment and
software, but in helping design and
manufacturing engineers develop and

interoperable PC-DMIS Enterprise

Metrology Solutions (EMS) software.
In addition, many of the more than 200
contract part manufacturers and all
of the independent measurement labs
that JPL uses can measure parts and
generate standardized reports using
the same measurement software in
conjunction with many different types

Having common software on different

measuring systems gives us the freedom
to adapt to this very fluid environment

and manufacturing stages at an offline programming station. Ultimately,

these programs are used throughout
the widely dispersed concurrent engineering and manufacturing enterprise
to generate standardized outputs:
PDFs, RTF files or PC-DMIS program
data files.
Because the entire spacecraft is
essentially a prototype, design
criteria were not nailed down until
after manufacturing had already
begun. We have one pass to make
and achieve something that has never
been made before says Clark. Design
refinements continue throughout the
fabrication and assembly process.

tolerance for failure.
Today JPL has Brown & Sharpe coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) of
various sizes, as well as a ROMER articulating arm with tactile probes and
Leica laser trackers, all equipped with

of measurement system hardware. As

a result, the lean inspection team has
many different options for keeping up
with the labs unpredictable workflow.
Regardless of the measurement
device they will be used with, common
measurement programs are typically
generated at JPL during early design

www.hexagonmetrology.com

With so many parts in various stages

of design and manufacturing, it is
hard for Clark and his colleagues to
predict what will be on the agenda
for any given day. As much as 80% of
our hardware is manufactured off lab
by various suppliers, says Clark. We
can see when they are due, and we
will program the most complex parts

in advance so that they are not bottlenecks in the inspection area.

However, JPLs schedule is not weekly
it is daily to hourly. Having common
software on different measuring systems gives us the freedom to adapt to
this very fluid environment, says Clark.
We often make last-minute changes
on who inspects what, where and with
which equipment.
As long as we can get the data,
PC-DMIS allows us to analyze anything
about the alignment used or relative
location of features, continues Clark.
Having data you can analyze is at least
as good as having a person go to the
plant and witness the inspection. We
can remotely give source inspection
approval or recommend changes that
will bring the part into conformity with
our needs while the part is still at the
supplier, and we continue to accomplish
other inspection work back in our
own lab.
JPL acquired a ROMER arm-type
measurement system with PC-DMIS
portable interoperable software and

then integrated it into the lean teams

inspection processes where it was
used for on-machine inspection of
components. With little modification,
programs written originally for use on a
CMM can be used with the arm.
JPL also has extended the measurement range of its CMMs by using the
measurement arm to pick up features
that fall outside the CMMs measuring
envelope. This can be done either by
incorporating the arm and the CMM into
the same program or importing the data
captured by the arm into the master
program. In either case, JPL avoids the
time and expense of sending parts to an
independent lab for measurement.
Clark says the greatest contribution of
interoperable software is the flexibility
it gives the lab to control when, where
and how a part will be measured and
by whom on a daily and hourly basis.
PC-DMIS EMS enables the transfer
of the inspection plan through a single
part program, executable on various
inspection equipment at various
facilities, says Clark. When conditions
change, it gives us options and having
options is very good. Our interoperable

software takes the focus away from the

measurement contraptions themselves
and allows the lean inspection team
to focus on the big picture goal of
qualifying all the parts that are going
to take the spacecraft, rover robot and
instrumentation on another successful
Mars mission.
