PROPOSAL TO DEVELOP A PRIMARY VILLAGE-SCHOOL INTO A MODEL SMART

SCHOOL
-

Pulkit Rahangdale (NLIU Bhopal)

OBJECTIVE:
To propose a solution suggesting an approach to develop a primary village-school into a model
Smart-School.
APPROACH:
In order to transform a school into a self-sustaining ecosystem, for the benefit of the students and
community, we firstly need to curb Teacher Absenteeism, account for the primary-level Dropout
Rates, establish Financial independence and finally to improve the overall Quality of Teaching.
Smart-Schools shall be learning hubs equipped with interactive teaching tools, leveraged
technology: computers & internet and better training modules. As per my understanding, the
approach should be towards providing positive education to talented rural and urban children
through setting up of model schools as benchmark of excellence. Such a scheme should follow
certain fundamental values and objectives:

To try out innovative curriculum and pedagogy.

To be a model in infrastructure, evaluation and school governance.
Self-sustainable ecosystem, particularly with respect to funding requirements.
Institute a mechanism for consistent evaluation of implementation of the scheme.

PROPOSED SUGGESTIONS/SOLUTIONS:
1. Qualitative Parameters:
- Engage dedicated NGOs/civil society groups in developing an innovative curriculum.
- Promote interactive learning, using IT solutions and integration with already existing
-

Government schemes (e.g., subsidized Aakash tablets for students).

Improve quality of Teacher Training Modules with emphasis on enhancing Life-

Skills.
2. Infrastructure:
- The model school shall have developed classrooms, using latest technologies such as
interactive white boards, digital podiums, projectors, digital visualizers, etc.

The school shall have an adequately prescribed area for sports and playground

facilities for students of all ages.

A well-resourced library with access to major online databases of arts, music and

literature shall be a key feature to our school.

Collaboration with volunteer-based teaching organizations (such as MAD, TEACH
FOR INDIA, PULER) will help curb the effects of teacher absenteeism.

3. Financing:
- Develop a self-sustainable financial model such as PPP (public-private partnerships).
- Encourage corporate houses to diverge their CSR funds to such model schools by
-

signing long term memorandums of agreements.

Encourage philanthropists and interested sponsors to adopt and financially support
such model schools for a designated time duration.

4. Others:
- Reduce teacher absenteeism by mandating online attendance through a GPS-assisted
mechanism, such as the e-attendance scheme introduced by Madhya Pradesh
-

Government.
Organize regular workshops and conferences aimed at discussing latest teaching
pedagogy and methodologies.

DESIRED IMPACT:
We aim to develop a sustainable framework which serves as a standard of excellence and source
of inspiration to other schools in the vicinity. These schools should instill some fundamental
values in its working such as dedication to encouraging meritorious students and supporting
varied talents in children of all ages. There should be constant evaluation of implementation of
desired objectives so that the model can be effectively replicated and there should be stringent
parameters to gauge the same, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
