Market insights
The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), to be implemented in 2015, will result in a single market and
production base among ASEAN countries. There will be increased movement of logistics, services,
investment and labour. The region will become highly competitive and all member countries need to be
prepared to increase workforce capacity in all sectors. While this provides enormous opportunities to the
Indonesian workforce, if the quality of Indonesias human resources cannot meet the AEC demand, it is
predicted that opportunities will be taken by workforces from other ASEAN countries.
According to the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), the Indonesian
workforce suffers from low education levels and expertise and, unless properly addressed, Indonesia
might struggle to meet the national labour demand required by the Indonesian Governments master plan
for the acceleration and expansion of economic development (MP3EI) and the demands of the AEC.
BAPPENAS has also projected that in 2014, Indonesia will create more than 9.4 million jobs, which
includes more than 4.5 million jobs in the industrial sector, and more than 4.5 million jobs for supporting
activities to the infrastructure sector.
According to BAPPENAS, job opportunities will be open to 32 key activities (including mining,
infrastructure and agriculture projects) in Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, West Nusa
Tenggara, Maluku and Papua. Most of these jobs are predominantly open to the non-agricultural sectors,
such as industrial, mining, technology, and other supporting services.
The largest telecommunication company in Indonesia, PT. TELKOM, has also predicted that the industry
will need around six million workers in ICT-related sectors by 2015, in order to develop broadband
technology in the country. There are currently only about four million workers in this sector, and it will be
difficult to meet the two million shortfall given the quality and expertise levels of human resources
currently available in the market.
Many top Indonesian and multinational companies operating in Indonesia value the quality of Australian
graduates in terms of their work skills, expertise and professionalism.
