Product Description
EVK2_CP/EVM2-CP_LIC - Optical sensor positioning devices with CAN-Bus-Interface and LIC

1.3 Application
Increasing levels of automation and a growing importance of product quality demand a
continuous detection of the strip edge position/strip width in processing lines.
To satisfy this function non-contact measuring sensors (type EVK / EVM) are used to
obtain information concerning the strip edge/strip centre position by using light units
(type LIC) to conduct a bandpass filtering process of a high-frequency proportion of
light.
The sensor positioning devices are controlled in individual cases of operation via the
downstream control electronics. When using sensor positioning devices of type EVK2CP or EVM2-CP the communication and control function is conducted via the
CANOpen interface. This significantly reduces the amount of wiring in comparison to
predecessor EVK and EVM units. Other functions and status messages are integrated
in the communication protocol, which makes maintenance options and troubleshooting
measures much more straightforward.
In normal circumstances a sensor positioning device is controlled in such a way that
measuring photocell LS13 continuously follows the changing strip edge position. This
is simultaneously accompanied by a reference photocell (type LS14), which
continuously monitors the degree of light intensity and compensates any
contamination present.
The current actual position of the sensor positioning device is detected by an internal
rotary potentiometer; it is also possible to use a digital linear stroke transducer.
Application of the LIC
The compact light emitter is a linear light emitter for optical strip sensing. The edge of
non-transparent materials can be scanned in combination with optical receivers
LS13/14 or HF-PLE/HF-PLM and the corresponding evaluation systems (e.g. EVK). A
strip edge sensing system can be realised by using a servo amplifier and an actuator
or two optical receivers.
The compact light emitter should not be used as a light for general illumination
purposes as defined in standard DIN EN 60598 (VDE0711) or other similar
standards.

Configuration and function

EVK2_CP/EVM2-CP_LIC - Optical sensor positioning devices with CAN-Bus-Interface and LIC

4 Configuration and function

4.1 Brief system description
At least one sensor positioning device with electrically adjustable slide is arranged
above the strip (two complete sensor positioning devices are also required for centre
control processes or width measurements). A high frequency alternating light
measuring unit, consisting of measuring and reference photocells, is assembled on
the slide. A rotary potentiometer is attached to the DC motor internally to detect the
current actual position.
A light unit with 2 kHz supply is located below the strip. Both the light unit and the
sensor positioning device(s) are supplied with power by mains adapters located in a
separate enclosure. The high frequency alternating light measuring equipment is
evaluated in the electronic unit on the sensor positioning device.

4.2 Effect description of the system with HF light unit

The strip edge is detected by a motorised sensor positioning device, which is
equipped with HF alternating light units LS13 / LS14 with protection against ambient
light. If the strip edge is displaced due to a change in strip width or a lateral strip
deviation, this is detected by the photocells. The superimposed control electronics
then activate the DC motor or the actuator of the control circuit, in order to ensure that
the strip edge always covers half of the measuring range of the photocell.
Contamination of the light emitters is compensated by applying the reference principle.
This involves each measuring unit using a measuring sensor and a reference sensor
directed to the same bright spot of the light emitter. While the measuring photocell
detects the lateral position of the strip edge the reference photocell measures the
background brightness of the light spot.
The elimination of ambient light disturbances through the use of HF light emitters and
selective HF alternating light receivers, whose bandpass evaluation occurs within the
EVK2-CP electronics, is of significant importance to the accuracy of the measurement
result. The intensity of the light emitted is regulated and monitored for any
malfunctions.
The entire system is parameterised as standard with a laptop or PC or via a
keyboard/diagnostics unit on the control electronics. When the power supply is wired
accordingly a complete alignment of the measuring sensors is possible, even without
CAN bus communication.

4.3 HF alternating light measuring sensors which are

insensitive to ambient light
Light units (LIC) are operated with a 2 kHz modulated supply voltage to eliminate
influences of ambient light on the strip position detection process. The measuring
signals for the HF alternating light measuring sensors are conducted through electrical
filters. When doing this only the high-frequency light signal is evaluated.
The brightness of the light units is maintained at a constant level by an internal control
circuit, which ensures this measuring device is unaffected by ambient light or changes
in voltage or temperature.

6.7 Commissioning of the sensor positioning device

The traversing path of the sensor positioning device is set to the inner and outer
maximum position by the manufacturer. If this needs to be changed (for mechanical
installation or a replacement device), the inner end position can be adjusted by turning
the friction clutch between the motor and the potentiometer. The outer end position
can only by changed by connecting a laptop and a terminal programme.
Checking the limit switch function of the EVK
1. Remove the cover of the EVK electronic unit and move the slide "to the strip
centre" or "to the strip edge" by using button S31 and S32 (previous selection S4/2
for manual operation);
LED H6 (3) signals "ready to move" or "not in end position".
When it is in the "end position, inner" or "end position, outer" LED H6 goes out and
the slide can only move in the opposite direction.
The inner end position is determined by the potentiometer voltage and it can be
changed as follows:
1. Drive the slide to the inner position and measure the actual position value at test
socket W.
The slide stops at 0 V DC.
2. The limit switch position can now be changed to the desired position by turning the
friction clutch between the motor and the potentiometer.
When changing the inner end position the value for the outer end position is also
changed. This is to be checked if necessary. The outer value is determined according
to the EVK stroke with a scaling value of 1V/100 mm (e.g. EVK600 should display 6 V
at the outer end position).
The outer end position is factory-set with a scale of 1 V/100 mm. A software-controlled
alteration using a laptop is possible, but not necessary for plant operation. In addition,
the associated control electronics also offers the possibility of electronically limiting the
stroke of the positioning device via the motor controller (e.g. to mask the edges of
transfer tables).

6.7.3 Aligning the reference photocell

See Aligning the measuring and reference photocell with the light unit [ 20]!

1. Connect external measuring instrument to measuring socket MEAS .. and GND

(2) on the sensor positioning device.
2. Cover the measuring range of the measuring photocell with at least 100 mm wide
material strips - from the centre of the plant outwards - directly on the light unit so
that the external measuring instrument displays a reading of 2.5 V.
3. Connect external measuring instrument to measuring socket REF .. and GND (2)
on the sensor positioning device.
4. Swivel the reference photocell transversely to the strip pass direction (see pos.
(4)) so that the measuring instrument displays 2.5 V; tighten the screws .
5. Check both voltage values at socket MEAS .. and REF .. (2.5 V). Re-adjust if
necessary.
The above described adjustment must be conducted by EVM devices for both
pairs of photocells! The additional measuring points and setting potentiometer
are accommodated on subprint EVK2.12 for this purpose.

Operation
EVK2_CP/EVM2-CP_LIC - Optical sensor positioning devices with CAN-Bus-Interface and LIC

7 Operation
7.1 Operation mode preselection
The base board EVK2.11 can be used in combination with the following subprints:
1. EVK2.12 (as electronics for EVM)
2. EVK2.13 (input of an installed SSI stroke transducer),
3. EVK2.14 (connection for 2 analogue sensors with 10 V including external feed of
the supply voltages (e.g. R42D12 assembled on EVK slide)
4. EVK2.15 (connection for 2 analogue sensors with internal 12 V DC supply: US
sensors with 9 V signal output)

7.2 "Position" and "locate edge" amplification

The basic amplification for the "position" mode is set directly on the sensor positioning
device. The software on the EVK2.11 board includes an internal test programme for
this purpose, which is set as follows:
1. Select the test programme via function switches S4/3 or S4/4 (standard operation
position 0).
2. Alternating between switching position S4/3 (100 mm) and S4/4 (150 mm) drives
the sensor positioning device between two positions.
The degree of amplification can then be aligned using potentiometer R62 to
prevent the positioning device overshooting the selected position.
3. Insert a specimen strip into the measuring area in a strip pass level for the "locate
edge" mode.
4. Select the test programme via function switch S4/1 (standard operation position
0).
5. Moving the material sample causes the positioning device to follow the lateral
movements. The degree of amplification is to be adjusted when doing this using
potentiometer R61 on the electronic unit EVK2.11.
In parallel to setting the degree of amplification on the EVK it is also possible to
implement a setting via the digital control amplifier. The respective configuration is to
be inferred from the system description for the overall control unit.

7.3 CAN-Bus communication

7.3.1 CAN bus addressing
1. Use the dip switches S50 and/or S51 to set the address on the CAN Bus network.
Switch S50 here stands for the "Low Byte" and switch S51 stands for the "High
Byte".
By default the first sensor positioning device in a CAN network is programmed
by EMG with the base address "04" hex.
When using a second device the address "05" hex is programmed (e.g. for
strip centre guiding with two EVKs).
The addresses of other positioning devices (e.g. for tack weld alignment) are
to be inferred from the operating manual or circuit diagram.
2. Jumper J9 is to be inserted for the last consumer on the CAN network according
to the circuit diagram and wiring (visible if no cable appears from terminal strip
X33) in order to activate the terminating resistor of 120 .

7.3.2 CAN-Bus transfer rate

Use DIL switch S3 to set the transfer rate.
This is determined during planning and is dependent, among other things, on the
overall cable length and number of users in the CAN network. Alterations and
deviations from the factory settings are listed in the operating manual for the overall
system.
