Introduction
This supplementary method statement describes the construction of the diaphragm wall
under an existing gas mains in the South Tunnel at panels STW33 and STW72, and the
existing water mains at panels STW36 and STW75. This supplementary method statement
should be read in conjunction with the method statement of diaphragm wall construction
MS001. Reference should also be made to the Gas Production & Supply Code of Practice
GPS 01 Avoiding Danger from Gas Pipes.
Before construction is carried out, the panel layout has been designed so that the gas and
water mains are located at about the middle of the diaphragm wall panel, to allow the
excavation tools to excavate the diaphragm wall without diversion of the gas and water
mains.

2.0

Protection of Gas and water mains

The gas and water mains will be protected by a steel frame that is suspended by steel beam
on top of the guide wall. The function of the frame is to identify the location of the gas and
water mains and to stop the excavation tools damaging them. The details of the protection
are attached in Appendix A.

3.0

Construction Sequence
A) Guide Wall Construction and Protection of Gas and Water mains
The as-built alignment and level of the gas and water mains have been surveyed and
recorded. Prior to guide wall construction, the alignment and top level of the gas and
water mains will be set out on site, and particular care will be taken when excavation is
carried out. Before guide wall construction, the gas and water mains will be excavated
to a depth of 1m and backfilled with aggregates to ensure the soil underneath the frame
can be removed easily during diaphragm wall excavation. The guide wall will then be
constructed across the gas and water mains. A minimum clearance of 200mm will be
maintained between the gas and water mains and the guide wall to avoid any damage
due to unexpected settlement.
The guide wall toe level may be lowered to extend up to 300mm below the bottom of
the gas and water mains, if so the guide wall will be formed with an opening around the
gas and water mains with 200mm clearance. (Refers to Appendix A).
Once the guide wall is cast the gas and water mains will be exposed again by hand
digging, so that the protection frame can be fabricated in place as per point 2.0.
B) Excavation
The first bite of the panel will be excavated beside the protection frame until the
required founding level is reached. The second bite will be excavated down to the
required founding level at the other side of the protection frame (refer to fig.2 of

appendix B). The middle bite will then be pre-excavated with a back-hoe and/or
trimmed by TD chisel down to around 6m below the bottom of the protection frame.
The grab can then be moved across to excavate the middle bite until the required
founding level is reached (refer to fig.3 of appendix B). The remaining soil underneath
the protection frame will be trimmed by the top of the clamshell.
C) Desanding of bentonite
Same as the normal procedure of diaphragm wall construction.
D) Cage Installation
Cage will be installed as per normal practice of diaphragm wall construction.
E) CWS joint Installation
CWS joint may be installed after the cage installation is completed.
F) Concreting
Same as normal procedure of diaphragm wall construction.

Before and during excavation

A specific safety procedure will be produced for work on the Gas Main.
Contacts list to be prepared showing contact persons and telephone numbers. This list
should include all the related parties' representatives (RSS, POKJV, BSGIPJV, Hong
Kong Gas Company, Water Services Department and the Fire Services Department).
Inform everyone living and working in the vicinity about the work on the gas and water
mains.
Everyone working on the gas and water mains to be trained in safe procedures.
A ganger to be arranged to look after the gas and water mains during excavation.
Experienced clamshell operator to be used for the excavation.
A gas detector will be put in place to detect any leak from the gas main.

In case of pipe damage or suspected gas leak

A) If concerning the gas mains call the fire services department (2723 2233) Police Hotline
(999) immediately.
B) HKGC or WSD as appropriate will be informed immediately to close the valve.
C) All related parties on the contact list to be informed immediately.
D) If concerning the gas mains remove all people from the vicinity.
E) Remove all possible sources of ignition away from the gas leak.
F) Assist HKGC, WSD, Police or Fire Services as requested.
