ASTM A633 Grade E

Normalized High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel
Plate
General Product Description
ASTM A633 Grade E is a normalized high-strength low-alloy structural steel plate for welded,
riveted or bolted construction requiring superior notch toughness performance at low ambient
temperatures. A633 Grade E has a minimum yield strength of 60 ksi [415 MPa] and may be
ordered with supplemental Charpy V-notch impact test requirements.

Applications: Typical applications for A633 Grade E include utility pole base plates, offshore oil
and gas platforms, construction equipment frames, electric shovel dipper handles and
suspension components.
Dimensions: The following A633 Grade E plate sizes are available:
Thickness: 0.375 - 2.00 (9.5 mm 50.1 mm)
Width: 72 - 120 (1,829mm - 3,048 mm)
Length: 240 - 600 (6.10m 15.24 m)

Mechanical Properties
Tensile Test is performed transverse direction according to ASTM A6 requirements. The
minimum values are tabulated below:

Charpy V-Notch Impact Toughness requirements are not included in the basic specification,
but may be ordered as a supplementary requirement. A minimum Charpy V-notch impact
energy value of 25 ft-lbs [34 J] at -40F [-40C] in longitudinal specimens is a typical
supplemental impact toughness requirement. Please inquire for applications requiring a
specified minimum impact toughness.

Tolerances
Thickness, width, and length tolerances for A633 Grade E steel plate are in accordance with the
requirements of ASTM A6. The flatness tolerance for as supplied product is ASTM A6.

Delivery Condition
ASTM A633 Grade E is supplied in the normalized condition.

Fabrication and Other Recommendations

Weldability: Welding of A633 Grade E shall be performed in accordance with the applicable
welding code. In the absence of a specified welding code, the following suggested minimum
preheat and interpass temperatures and welding consumables are provided. Special welding
consumables and welding procedures may be required to match the base metal toughness.
Low hydrogen practices are strongly recommended, including the removal of surface moisture.

Formability: A633 Grade E material exhibits excellent cold forming characteristics. Shear burrs
and heat-affected zones of thermal cut edges on or near the bend axis as well as sharp corners
on edges and on gas cut or punched holes located on or adjacent to the bend axis should be
removed by grinding prior cold forming. The following recommended minimum inside bend
