PROJECT GUIDELINES
MS. MAHVESH MAHMUD
A. Objective:
The final project for Advanced Operations Management should focus on a real-life operations-related problem
facing an organization/industry and your project report should help the organization/industry over-come this
problem through the proposal that you make.

B. Project Documentation:
1.

A one-page topic approval draft should be submitted to the instructor (SEE APPENDIX I) as soon as
possible. Once this is approved you may proceed with the field-work.

2.

The project report cover page is in Appendix II. You may use this or further improve it for submission.

3.

The project report should not be more than 10 pages long.

4.

It

can

have

as

many

appendices

as

you

want.

This

means

that

you

can

add

data/diagrams/statistics/tables/extra information at the end of the report.


5.

It should follow an APA style of referencing/formatting.

6.

The font-size should be 12 Times-New Roman, block justified. Page numbers should not be missing.

7.

The diagrams should be properly labeled and sourced. It should be spell-checked and counter-checked
before submission.

8.

All aspects/topics explored in the report should have ATLEAST 3 TO 5 QUANTITATIVE


OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT concepts which have been done in class that should be applied to
the topic of choice. These should NOT OVERLAP WITH OTHER GROUPS IN CASE THEY
CHOOSE THE SAME INDUSTRY/ORGANIZATION.

9.

The report should be submitted on the day of the deadline announced by the instructor along with a
feedback form (SEE APPENDIX III) signed and stamped by the person contacted in the organization of
choice. This is to be attached the beginning of the report.

10. A soft-copy of the report should be e-mailed to the instructor on the day of the submission along with
presentation slides.

Failure to meet these requirements will result in negative marking!

C. Choice of Industry/Organization:
The group may choose an industry or an organization to explore and understand the taught operations
management concepts and issues. Industry analysis will result in a macro-level analysis while organizationallevel analysis will result in a micro-level analysis. There has to be a clear understanding of the two and the
measures and metrics used for each will therefore be different.
The different organizations can be explored in the following industries:

D. Operations Management Topics to be explored in the Organization/Industry of


Choice:
The real-life problem or issue that your group may explore can be organized into the following
questions/areas (THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST, PLEASE COME UP WITH YOUR OWN
QUESTIONS IF YOU LIKE):

What are the various inventory management, distribution economics, production planning, and
supplier-management issues faced at the organization?

2-

What are the alternative ways to organize workflows? When are each appropriate, especially in the
public service context?

3-

What do the performance measures at XYZ organization indicate about efficiency and quality of
current services? What are the disadvantages of the service line approach?

4-

What defines the capacity of a process? What determines the speed of a process? How is it calculated?
How much is just right?

5-

How does workflow impact inventory and output?

6-

What are the implications of waiting in lines on work processing design?

7-

What value does inventory create? What costs are incurred? What is the optional inventory level of
turnover items?

Why are critical spare parts unique and how should their inventory levels be

established?
8-

What are the capacities and utilizations of each process stage? Where is the bottleneck? Is there
sufficient space on the platform to accommodate demand? What are the opportunities and challenges
of peak demand? What are effective response strategies?

9-

What are the various types of supply chains in different industries? What are the complexities of
managing supply chains? Why is coordination of supply chains so critical?

10- In what ways are public sector supply chains more difficult to manage than those in the private sector?
11- What are the key features of a Balanced Scorecard? What are the requirements for its successful
implementation?
12- What are the key features of Kaizen? What are the requirements for its successful implementation?
13- What are the key features of Six-Sigma? What are the requirements for its successful implementation?
14- What is the Supply-Chain design strategy of company ABC?
15- What are the global supply chain challenges faced by the multinational ABC?
16- What ERP/CRM applications are being used to manage supply chains?
17- How are bottlenecks managed?
18- What are the various Health, Safety and Environmental standards that are being followed at the
organization? How are these aligned with the TQM policy of the organization?
19- What project management/scheduling/work breakdown structure techniques/methods are used at the
organization?
20- How are product selection and design of products done?
21- Any other topic/question that you wish to explore related to the subject.
E. PROFESSIONALISM
1. Please refrain from missing other course classes on account of my courses project.
2. A project presentation will also be held at the end of the course (as scheduled in the course outline)
and a mini-video of the project may also be shown during the presentation (even though this is not
mandatory).
3. Please refer to the document on PRESENTATION GUIDELINES uploaded on the portal for
professionalism to be observed during the presentation.
4. Please conduct field-work dressed in formal attire. One or two visits should suffice.

5. Please choose only one or two members from the group to visit the organization. All members of the
group do not need to visit the organization.
6. Please use professional language in all correspondence with the organization you interact with.
7. Please make sure that you make appointments in advance before visiting the organization.
8. Please be on time during your visit to the organization of choice.
9. Please refrain from using cell-phones during an interview or face-to-face meeting(s) at the
organization.
10. Please take permission from the organization BEFORE shooting a video/photographing/using any
document of the organization.
11. Please be diplomatic in asking questions and refrain from using offensive/SMS-oriented/chat/slang
language.
12. Please always thank the person helping you at the organization at the end of each visit/contact and
always remain polite and courteous.

F. Project Grading Criteria:


1. Fulfilling criteria set in sections A, B, C, D and E of this document .
