Unit. I
a. At the conceptual design phase of an aircraft, what do you understand by the
Performance requirements of the aircraft? Explain in detail.
b. Draw the three views of the layout of a 60 seater high subsonic aircraft.
OR
a
An antisubmarine turbo jet aircraft is designed for a loiter of three hours at a
distance of 3,000 km from the base. The crew weighs 400 kg and payload weigh
4600 kg. The aircraft cruises at Mach 0.6 at an altitude of 10 km, where the speed of
sound can be taken to be 300 m/s. The maximum value of (L/D) is 16. Calculate the
omission fuel weight fraction of the aircraft if the specific fuel consumption is 0.015
grams per Newton per second.
b Draw specifications for a business (executive) jet airplane to perform short haul
service with a seating capacity for eight (8) passengers. Make use of sketches and
Unit. II
a. i. Derive the wing loading W/S, for a jet aircraft for cruise as a function of dynamic
pressure and parasite drag coefficient.
ii. What is obstacle clearance distance? How does it depend on the type of Aircraft?
Explain.
b. Describe the maneuver loads acting on an aircraft and its V - n diagram.
OR
a. i. Define approach speed and touch-down speed. Also, express them in terms of stall
speed Vstall.
ii. Define the landing distance for a civil general aviation aircraft, transport air-craft
(airliner), and military aircraft as per FAR (Federal Aviation Regulationsof US).
b. Explain the term `Longitudinal Control Line'. How do you generate the outer profile
of the fuselage of an aircraft using longitudinal control lines. Explain in detail with
neat sketches.
Unit. III
a. Derive the expression for the load factor, `n', in terms of lift, thrust and weight of
the aircraft for maximum instantaneous turn.
b Discuss airfoil aerodynamic characteristics of 6 digit NACA airfoils. Use good
sketches. Discuss in particular (Cl)max versus t/c (thickness to chord ratio).
OR
a i. Write the force equations for an aircraft in steady climb, with the help of a
sketch.

aircraft.
i. Discuss the aerodynamic and structural designs of wing - fuselage junction.

i. Make the conceptual sketch of a supersonic stealth bomber.
ii. Describe the means of reducing radar detectability of a bomber.
OR
i. What are the various factors involved in deciding the location of the wing with
respect to the fuselage and explain them?
