Dear All
On behalf of my team it is a pleasure to present an account of our
achievements during last year which signifies the efforts that this
team though small has undertaken. We started the year 2014 on
a sad note with the demise of Pakistani community members in a
car crash on Boxing Day (2013) and also ended on a very sad note
mourning the victims of Sydney Siege and the worst massacre in
the history of Pakistan that saw more than 150 lives lost. One
hopes for a better and peaceful year ahead.

153 requests for employment

82 requests for accommodation
12 requests related to education providers
11 requests for assistance with immigration queries
5 referrals for support to victims of domestic violence (2 from Non- Pakistani migrants).
One of the issues that has been identified is the lack of information to the victims while
another issue that was identified was lack of a service which could provide car seats on
loan so we can arrange gatherings where these victims can attend with kids specially
when the victim does not have a license.

f. 4 donation requests: Three regarding funerals of deceased Pakistani students. The first
donation request was related to late Rafique Paras which became an issue as few
community representatives started the donation on our facebook page without any
authorisation from the deceaseds family. This was dealt with immediately as were in
full knowledge that the insurance will be covering the cost however a group got upset
when disallowed and started posting negative comments about the Group as well as the
High Commission of Pakistan which resulted in the issue of a media release by the High
Commission to clarify the misperceptions of the community.(Attachment 1)
The second unfortunate incident was of late Turab Ali which was fully covered by the
High Commission of Pakistan in Canberra as soon as the request from the mother was
received.
The third donation request was related to late Nadeem Khan and we did try to convince
the next of kin to get a letter from the father of the deceased but this advice was
constantly declined. However about 18 hours before the flight was due to take off with
the body of the deceased, a call was received from the friends that they need 2500$
urgently to release the body of the deceased. The assistance was provided within half an
hour.
As all three deaths were related to Road Traffic Accidents we did have a meeting with
different stakeholders to identify the steps to be taken.
The fourth request was on an individual level for the provision of fee for the visa processing
which was not approved.
g. 3 requests for legal assistance including 1 from Perth detention centre
h. Misc: Two for provision of holy Quran and two for course books.

C. Connections
Australia Day project
Our Australia Day Project is growing bigger every year with more than one event happening.
For 2014, two water pumps were installed as a result of donation from one member in remote
areas of Pakistan which enabled the community to get access to clean water through Children
Health and Education Foundation.

At the same time we had raised funds through city of Vincent event in October 2013 which
were also used towards basic supplies to a school in Sialkot. In addition we received a huge
consignment from Ms. Juanita Perez of crayons for the school kids in Pakistan which were also
distributed at the same time.

In 2013 we also started working on a project to seek donations and used pair of eye glasses for
Pakistan which may help someone who cannot afford to buy eye glasses. The Theosophical
Order of Service were our major contributor to this project in 2014 and we were able to collect
more than 100 eye glasses which have been distributed free of cost through a medical student
led project in Azad Jammu Kashmir Medical College. This is now an ongoing project while
another one for Australia Day 2015 is the solar light project which was initiated last year in
response to a request from Children Health and Education Foundation, Pakistan

Following were acknowledged for their contribution in 2014.

Ali Raza Syed
Ali Raza Syed has excelled academically as well as in extracurricular activities and has been
presented Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by the West Australian Governor Malcolm McCusker. He
was the only boy from the seven private schools in Perth-school to win the Gold Award. In his own
school - Scotch College - he is the only boy after 1966 to have earned this award. Ali Raza Syed is
currently studying at the University of Western Australia.
Sarah Imtiaz
The second nominee was awarded for leadership which is itself a difficult task and more difficult
when it is a girl who is leading the team of boys and girls. This young lady has shown exceptional
qualities beside academically strong achievement and is again a student at the University of
Western Australia. The organisation that she is leading is UWA Muslim Student Association which is
playing a key role in interfaith dialogues and promoting harmony among different cultures and
religions.
Nevin Jayawardena
For last two years we are indebted with support from our friends in Australia for a lot of initiatives.
There are many team members who work behind the scene with us. One such person has worked

tremendously for the visual identity of our organisation. Whether it is a flyer for the event or the
logo of Pakistanis in Australia, a beautiful green five cornered star within seven cornered Australian
one, it is all created by one and only Nevin Jayawardena who is also currently leading the DESI
group which is a group representing students who original have linkages towards the Indo Pak
subcontinent.
The Theosophical Order of Service
It was merely a coincidence when we get in touch with this organisation following an invitation to
speak at one of their meetings. It came as a surprise to know that this organisation is running
schools in Karachi by the name of Qandeel which means light to promote education in underserved
communities of Pakistan. IN addition, for our Beenai project where we collect reading glasses to be
distributed in Pakistan, this organisation is our major donor so far and only this year we have been
able to send 100 pair of reading glasses to Pakistan which will be distributed through a student run
project in one of the medical colleges in Azad Jammu Kashmir. This all has become a reality because
of the support of just one organisation. Ms. Rhonda Phillips, the President on behalf of the
Theosophical Order of Service accepted the certificate.

Outcomes
Through our activities we have increased more involvement of the younger generation and
new migrants as well as provides a sense of belonging to older community members to
Australia. The sharing of information through facebook has grown. Similarly the number of
invitations to the events and requests for collaboration is constantly increasing.

Treasurers report
One more year has passed and another report in your hand. With a decision to
offer complimentary membership to all new migrants and students for their first
year in Australia, we have increased numbers but not the income however with
regular grants coming in; it has not affected the activities.
All the grants received in year 2014 have been acquitted.

As a team member, this may be perhaps the last annual report I am part of
