Nameth returns after finishing state runner-up in 3,200

Verona Area High School track

and field senior Ryan Nameth
returns after a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 1 state
meet in the 3,200-meter run.
Nameth, a University of Wisconsin distance recruit, posted a
school record time of 9 minutes,
15.33 to finish second to rival
Olin Hacker of Madison West.
He returns in hopes of leading
the Wildcats to a first-place finish in the Big Eight Conference.
Though the Wildcats expect to
be much stronger in the throwing
events this season, they enter the
season without the same sprint
depth they had last year.
We will need to stay healthy
to have a chance at the Big 8
championship this year, VAHS
head coach Joff Pedretti said.
The Wildcats won the Verona
regional and Janesville Parker
sectional, but finished runner-up
in the Big Eight to Middleton.
Senior Noah Roberts should
once again be solid in the throws
at the conference level, while
Jack Herkert (high jump), Jacob
Auman (triple jump), and Cameron Tindall (sprints) will likely
round out our top performers this
season.
Verona returns three quarters
of its 4x200 relay in senior Josh
Beckam, Auman and Cameron,
which took 17th place at state.
The teams top field event finisher, Steven Queoff finished
19th in the high jump competition.

Roberts, Ryan Nameth, Brady Traeder, Dillon Villacrez, Ben Giese and Nick Stigsell.

The Cardinals, who finished

fifth at last years state meet, are
once again the favorite to win
the Big Eight. If the Cardinals
win the title, it would be the first
three-peat since Verona joined
the Big 8 in 2009. Last year Middleton finished 59 points ahead
of the second-place Wildcats last
year.
I dont think they will completely dominate like that again,
but their returners they are certainly the front-runners again,
Pedretti said.

Beside Verona and Middleton,

Janesville Craig is expected to
round out the top-tier in conference with solid returners.
Middleton returns three-fourth
of its second place 4x100
relay (Alex Wood, Noah
Meester and Nmadi
Okoli) and all of
its seventh-place
4x800 relay
(Roger Waleffe,
Zach ShoemakerAllen, Josh Arandia and Hagge).

The Cardinals graduated high

jump state runner-up Andy Keeler, but return senior
Parker Johnson,
who finished eighth
in the pole vault.
Perrin Hagge is
back after finishing
10th in the 800 run.
Defending state champion
Olin Hacker and Jack Wellenstein (400) both of Madison
West should once again be tops
in the state in their respective
events.

Hacker, a two-time state cross

country champion, returns after
winning the 3,200 last year. He
finished third in the 1,600.
Other conference athletes
expected to be amongst the
areas best are Middletons
Perrin Hegge (800) and Noah
Meeteer (pole vault).
Janesville Craigs Ian Reinicke
finished third in the triple jump,
while Madison La Follette
Charles Jackson placed seventh.
Beloit Memorial senior Travonne Batista returns after
a seventh-place finish in the
100-meter dash.

following the graduation of Daurice Fountain of Madison Memorial who won both the 110 and
300 titles at state. Fountain also
finished runner-up in the long
jump. The top thrower in the Big
Eight is also open following the
graduation of Sun Prairies Craig
Evans, who placed fourth at state
in the shot put.

season against Madison East and
Middleton on May 14. The Wildcats host Janesville Craig and

girls track and field team lost
15 letterwinners from a year
ago, but remain optimistic
with 25 returning.
Despite finishing fifth
overall in the Big Eight Conference a year ago, Verona
could be more than capable
of moving up a couple spots.
The top two spots are probably out of reach, however.
We hope to be competitive in the extremely talented
Big 8 conference, Mark
Happel said. We have
decent depth in the sprints
and some talented returning
jumpers, vaulters and hurdlers.
Verona returns half of its
state-qualifying 4x200 and
4x400 relays. Sophomore
Kristi Larsen was on both
relays, while junior Kylie
Schmaltz joined her and

Jenni LaCroix and Lexy

Richardson to take 19th
in the 4x200. Senior
Hannah Miller, LaCroix
and Richardson teamed
up with Larsen to finish
21st as a 4x400 team.
Lexy Richardson, who
finished 19th in the high
jump, graduated following
last season, leaving sophomore Kailey Olson to take
over as the girls top high
jumper.
Olson has looked solid
to state the season, winning
the Nelson-Daniel Classic
after finishing second to the
defending state champion at
the W/TFA both indoors at
UW-Whitewater.
Also leaving a void in the
field events is Nikky Zimbrick, who graduated after
qualifying for state in the
pole vault.

Middleton and Sun Prairie continue to reload with a
tremendous amount of talent

Middleton, Sun Prairie
and Madison Memorial are
all loaded with talent and
depth, Happel said.
Middleton finished in a
ninth-place tie with Bay Port
at state last season, while Sun
Prairie took 12th.
Middleton returns all of
its fifth place 4x100 relay in
Olivia Robers, Hanna Docter,
Rachel Zander and Lauren
Smith. Senior Bobbi Patrick
and Docter return on the
4x400 as well which finished
runner-up with returning
teammates Hanne AndersonSmith and Emily Zeker.
Senior Rachel Wians,
Samantha Valentine and Patrick added a second-place
finish on the 4x800 as well,
but graduated Delaney Foster.
Patrick also finished ninth
in the 800, while Sun Prairie junior Katie Hietpas took
seventh in the 3,200 and 11th
in the mile.
Sun Prairie returns the only
defending state champion in
the Big Eight in senior high
jumper Tierney Lindner
(5-6).
Madison Memorial junior
Holly Houston returns as
the Big Eights top discus
thrower after finishing ninth
at state.
Beloit Memorial figures
to be the team to beat in the
sprints, especially after its
4x200 finished eighth overall at state last year with the
all-underclassmen quarter of
Shynia Summerville, Grace
Roegner, Yolonda Johnson
and Elliott Jaliyah.
Elliott also figures to be
one of the conferences top
sprinters this season after finishing in seventh place in the
state in the 100-meter dash.

After just missing making sectionals as a team

last season, the Verona
Area High School boys
golf team returns four with
the hopes of not only making sectionals but to also
get back to the top of the
Big Eight Conference.
Seniors Joey McCormick
and Austin Lois, junior
Nick Meland and sophomore Will Zunker are back
in 2015.
(They) give us some
depth with experience,
head coach Jon Rebholz
wrote in a preview questionnaire. All four averaged in the mid 80s last
year and will hopefully cut
a few strokes off that for
this year.
They will be thrust
into more of a leadership
role this year, so how they
handle that will dictate
how successful we are this
year.
McCormick, Meland
and Zunker all played at
regionals for varsity in
2014, along with graduates
John Tackett and Riley
Schmitz.
The Wildcats made a
three-team playoff with a
chance to make sectionals
but lost by one stroke to
Waunakee.
This season, Lois is
moved up to varsity with
the No. 5 golfer slated to
be freshman Garhett Kaegi
in Mondays Stoughton
invite.
The regional is Tuesday,
May 26, or Wednesday,
May 27, at Pleasant View
Golf Course. The sectional is Tuesday, June 2,
or Wednesday, June 3, at
Reedsburg Country Club.
State is Monday-Tuesday, June 8-9, at the University of Wisconsin- Madisons University Ridge
Golf Course.

pack into the top three in
2014, but a conference title
was a loftier goal than the
year before.
Rebholz said the Wildcats have more potential
to challenge for the Big
Eight crown this season.
The key for us will
be to remain confident
and consistent, and play
smart and efficient
golf, Rebholz said.
There has been some
dedicated work in the
off-season by some
of our guys. That will
help as we go through
one of the stronger
conferences, regionals and sectionals in
the state.
Middleton is
the favorite to
win the Big
Eight with
three juniors
back from last
seasons Big Eight and
sectional champions.
Emmet Herb, Brady
Thomas and Joey Levin are
all back.
Thomas finished 28th
at state with a 155, while
Levin finished tied for 44th
with a 159. Herb finished
tied for 77th with a 167.

They have the

best mix of talent,
depth, and expe rience, Rebholz
said.
Madison Memorial, Janesville Parker
and Beloit Memorial
are all in the mix for
the top two in the conference with Verona,
Rebholz said.
Madison Memorial
gets three of five golfers back from last years
sectional team Juniors
Jacob OLaughlin, Jack
Andringa and Jake Rath.
Beloit also has three of
four back from its 2014
sectional team senior
John West, junior Jack
Eldred and sophomore
Sam Klobucar.
Parker only gets one
golfer back from last seasons team senior sectional qualifier John Milner.
Other top individuals in
the conference are senior
Peter Conowall and junior
Nils Arneson of Madison
East and senior Nate Oehrlein of Sun Prairie.
The Big Eight Conference meet is at 8:30 a.m.
Thursday, May 21, at
Evansville Golf Club.

After two years as the

Verona Area High School
boys tennis No. 2 singles
player, junior Alex Pletta
takes over atop the lineup
for Phillip Rudnitzky.
Pletta finished
his sophomore sea son with a 22-8
record, but it was
a 6-4, 6-1 loss at
the Lake Geneva
Badger sectional
to Oregons Calvin
Schneider that motivated him over the offseason. That loss cost Pletta
a chance to qualify
for his first WIAA
Division 1 individual state
meet.
Dont expect
Pletta to only
play singles though,
as head coach Rick Engen
left the door open for his
top player to also see time
at No. 1 doubles.
Alex is quite capable
of playing both, we just
have not made that final
decision, Engen said.
That decision could be
based on how strong a
change the Wildcats have
at overtaking Oregon and
Madison West at sectionals.
The Panthers beat the
Regents by three points to
reach their first state team
tournament last year,
while Verona finished
tied for seventh.
It was the first time
in over 14 years that the
Wildcats failed to qualify

anyone for the individual

state tournament.
I feel like we have a
more mature team this
year with the addition of
three new players which
will bolster our depth,
VAHS head coach Rick
Engen said.

Behind Pletta in the

lineup is a pair two-time
letterwinner in junior Patrick Conley (No. 2 singles) and Jonah Gerrits (3
singles).
Freshman Vivik Swaminath figures to round out
the varsity singles lineup.
Junior Matt Blessing
moves up to No. 1 doubles where he is expected
to be joined by freshman
Jordan Hutchcroft, who
is replacing his brother
Jackson and Johnny Yan.
Sophomore Connor
Melzer and senior Alex

Brietfelder take over at

No. 2 doubles, while
senior Christian Gross
and junior Luke Schoeberle open the season in
the 3 doubles spot.
Middleton is the glaring
favorite to win another
Big Eight Conference title
with the return of
sophomore No. 1
singles champion Jack Van
Emburg, as
well as several other good
players, Engen
said.
The Wildcats
expect to contend for
second place, however, against Madison
Memorial, Madison
West and Sun Prairie.
Verona opens the conference season April 16
at Madison West before
hosting Middleton five
days later. The Wildcats
travel to Sun Prairie (May
12) and Madison Memorial (May 14). All conference meet are slated for 4
p.m. starts.
The Big Eight Conference meet is May 19-20
while sectionals is slated
for May 27. Both meets
take place at UW-Madisons Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Bailey Buisker, Leslie Banzhaf
and Shannon Whitmus.
Ray (second team), Rudnicki
(third team) and Keyes (honorable mention) were all named to
the All State team last season.
A three-year starter for the
Wildcats in the circle, Ray
returned last season to strike out
150 in 139 2/3 innings, while
allowing just 17 earned runs to go
20-3 on the year.
Besides being the second best
pitcher in the area, she also led

the team in batting average (.519),

hits (43), home runs (3) average
and tied Kealy for the team lead
in RBIs with 30.
Though not new to the team,
junior Alyssa Erdman takes over
for Ray this season as Veronas
new starting pitcher.
Erdman and freshman Emma
Kleinsek will share pitching
duties (Verona had a third pitcher
Quin Nelson that also saw some
innings during the teams Spring
Break trip to Florida).
Anderson added that freshman
Savanna Rainey should find a
starting role on the team, bringing

her speed and strong hitting to

bear in the line-up.
Other senior newcomers, Sara
Endres, Allison Armstrong and
Carrie Snodgrass will also be in
the mix.
Having said all of that, Keyes,
who hit .366 with a .461 on-base
percentage and a .521 slugging
percentage to go along with eight
doubles, a home run and 15 RBIs,
will lead the team.
We expect a great offensive
season and defensive play (at
short) from Kori, Anderson said.
A year ago Verona was nearly unbeatable in the Big Eight

Conference, posting an impressive 17-1 record.

With the addition of freshmen
newcomers and strong hitting
from returning starters and returning players battling for a starting
role, Verona looks to compete
with anyone and repeat as conference champs.
Besides his Wildcats, Anderson
said he also sees Middleton and
Janesville Craig competing for
top positions.
Middleton finished last season
13-5 in conference, taking third
place, while Craig went 8-10 in
sixth.

Craig has started the season

2-0, while Middleton and the
Wildcats are each 1-0.
Madison La Follette (14-4)
finished runner-up last season,
but the graduation of ace Nicole
Newman the Lancers figure to
drop back a bit this season.
The Wildcats hosts Cardinals
on April 17 and then again April
13 at Firefighters Park in Middleton. Both games are slated for
5 p.m. starts. Verona then plays
the Cougars in a doubleheader
May 5 at Janesville Youth Sports
Complex. The first game is set for
a 4:30 p.m. start.
