BUSINESS LAW CONFERENCE 2015 FROM THE ORGANIZERS
PERSPECTIVE (PROGRAMS)
Ley La Salles Business Law Conference 2015: Into The Era of ASEAN
Integration was held las March 13, 2015 at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall, 5 th Floor of De
La Salle University Manila. The whole topic of this years BLC was about the
ASEAN Integration and how different business and economic aspects of the
Philippines are to be affected by the said integration. Ley La Salle invited several
notable speakers for the days affairs such as Senator Sonny Angara, Mr.
Kenneth Abante from the Department of Finance, Mr. Tonisito Umali from the
Department of Education and Dr. Tereso Tullao from the School of Economics of
DLSU.
My approach for this paper would not be from the perspective of a
participant but that of an organizer. I was honored that I was selected by my
organization to be the Programs Committee Head of the event. Truth be told,
strategizing to plan the days events was quite a perplexing task. My task
involved making the program flow, maintaining a system so that the central
committee worked efficiently, time management, crowd control and basically,
making sure that everything was where it is supposed to be in a designated time
so that the series of events would be in sync with the flow. Prior to the event
date, I have already been planning out the sequence of events. I worked hand-inhand with the Logistics, Communications and Marketing committee since my
program flow relied heavily on the outcome of their work. Keeping a close track
on the events going around BLC pre-event was very arduous for I also had my
academics to take care of. The inevitable changes of speakers, sponsors, budget

and equipment hindered me from having a solid foundation for my planned

program flow so constant updating was of high necessity.
Come event day, I had to make sure that the program flow would be errorfree, as much as possible, and that all things have been taken care of. My
strategy was to constantly contact all the different heads to see if there are
immediate changes so that last minute execution would not be necessary. Trying
to foresee changes, especially in the arrival of speakers and sponsors, was
menacing because last minute modifications could adversely affect the rest of the
events for the day. Thankfully, only minimal complications were encountered for
the day and that additional burdens were easily resolved.
To sum up my paper, being in charge of the programs committee really
taught me a lot about proper strategy, planning and decision-making. These 3
concepts are usually taken for granted by a lot of people but actually applying
them to something takes some rigor, patience and pacing. Even though Strategic
Management is applied on a business setting, organizing and planning the event
was treated much like a business wherein disregard for proper strategic and time
management would lead to chaotic results that would negatively affect the
outcome of the event. My responsibilities, along side with my programs
committee, made me realize that an event like that, much like a business, needs
to be decided upon with a proper study of different aspects such as resources,
demographics and operations. Without the proper strategy as to the allocation of
resources, a clear study of the area and the like, no concise plans would have
been made. It is evident the proper strategic actions lead to the success of an
event in the same way that it would lead a business to continuous development
and growth. To set aside strategy, planning and decision-making would be gross
negligence on the part of an organizer or a business owner for the event or
business would have no direction thus, unfavorable results would transpire.
