You might not realize it, but you yes, you have had an incredible impact
on my life.
In my role as Natures Pathways Editorial Director, I am often touched by
the stories readers like you share about how very life-changing fitness, complementary and alternative health practices, mindfulness, and sustainable living
can be. Hearing what a difference Natures Pathways has made in someones life
is both inspiring and humbling. Being part of this community has brought me
incredible joy.
But just as every story no matter how sweet must come to an end, my chapter
at Natures Pathways has drawn to a close. It is with a heavy heart today that I
say farewell. I have learned and accomplished so much in my time with this
magazine, but I know in my soul that it is time for someone new to take the
reins and provide fresh leadership to this very important cause.
Im unbelievably excited to see what the future holds for Natures Pathways
and its new managing editor: Grace Olson. Grace is not only an extremely
talented editor and forward-thinking leader, she is my valued friend, and I
know she will work every day to make Natures Pathways everything it can and
should be.
Life seldom works out as we plan. But the unexpected can be just as sweet.
And while Ill miss all of you, I know our paths will cross again. Thank you and
farewell for now.

Need more
zzzs? Secrets
to getting a
good nights
By Randi Mann, NP

etting a good nights sleep is an essential part of reducing the effects of stress on your body. Did you know that
during sleep your body does most of its healing, repairing and replenishing? Its amazing what a difference eight to nine
hours of restful sleep can make! Many exhausted women feel much
better by identifying and treating the causes of their insomnia.

Here are some common scenarios reported

by many sleep-deprived patients:

1. You fall asleep easily, within 10-15 minutes of climbing into

bed, but wake up a few hours later fully awake and have
trouble falling back to sleep again. If you do fall back to sleep
it is shortly before your alarm goes off.
2. You fall asleep on the couch or in a chair in the evening
watching TV. You then wake up and go to bed only to find
that you cannot fall back to sleep for hours.
3. You go to bed feeling exhausted but lay there for hours unable
to quiet your mind and turn off your thoughts so you can fall
Your hormones may be playing a big part in your insomnia. It is
very important to determine if this is the root cause of your sleep
issues as this can easily be corrected. If you are not producing
adequate progesterone, the calming hormone that helps relieve irritability and anxiety, you may not sleep well. If your cortisol level,
the stimulating hormone that helps you respond to stress, is high in
the evening you may have trouble falling and staying asleep.

Natures Pathways | May 2015

Your hormones may be

playing a big part in your
insomnia. It is very important
to determine if this is the root
cause of your sleep issues as
this can easily be corrected.
If your blood sugar drops during the night this can cause a release
of cortisol in the middle of the night and cause you to wake up
earlier than you wish. Estrogen also plays a part in helping women
sleep well. It is also possible that your thyroid gland is releasing too
much thyroid hormone and this too can interfere with sleep.
It is a great idea to have your hormone levels tested to see if they
are in optimal ranges. When patients report sleep difficulties, we
order hormone testing to evaluate their levels of the female sex
hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone along with adrenal
hormones cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). We
also check several thyroid hormone levels including TSH, FT4,
FT3 and RT3 along with testing for thyroid antibodies called
TPO and TG. If your hormone levels are low or out of balance
we prescribe customized dosed, bioidentical hormones that are

made especially for you at the doses that you need to help to
correct the imbalances.

Further strategies to help you sleep better

Limit or stop all caffeine. F or some very sensitive patients

we advise stopping all caffeine because if your hormones are

significantly out of balance even one cup of coffee before 8
a.m. can cause you to wake up 20 hours later at 2 a.m.!
Exercise earlier in the day (or at least three hours before
Be mindful of activities that cause you stress or anxiety later in
the evening and avoid these activities (may include watching
the news, paying bills, arguments with family members etc.).
Try to keep to a routine and go to bed and get up at the same
time daily to help to train your internal biological clock.
Go to bed by 10 p.m. nightly as the sleep you get before
midnight is the most beneficial for your adrenal glands.
Do not eat large amounts of food within three hours of going
to bed and avoid drinking more than 4-8 ounces of water
before bedtime.
Try a warm relaxing bath on nights you fear you may have
sleep issues; it raises your body temperature and can help to
induce sleep. My favorite bath routine involves adding 1-2 cups
of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate absorbed through the skin
is very relaxing for our muscles) plus to 1 cup of baking soda
(this is alkalizing to a stressed out, acidic body) and 10 drops of
lavender oil (aromatherapy that helps to lower cortisol levels).
Make your bedroom as comfortable and dark as possible.
Listen to Guided Imagery to help turn off a busy mind and
relax your body my favorite is found at, #2121 Healthful Sleep. Research has proven that
this CD worked better than Ambien (a popular prescription
sleeping medication) in effectiveness, had no side effects and
cost much less. Listen as you climb into bed and listen again if
you wake during the night and cant fall back to sleep. Do this
for 30 nights in a row to help reset poor sleep habits.
Consider use of safe and effective supplements such as melatonin, magnesium, L-theanine and 5-HTP along with herbal
remedies such as lemon balm and passion flower.
Just as sleep is a renewing time for your body, so are periods of
silence in the form of prayer, meditation, spending time in nature
or listening to music. Every aspect of you needs rest and respite
in order to feel refreshed and ready to meet the next day so
please seek help if you are not sleeping well your physical and
emotional health depend on it!

Is it dangerous to
take traditional
medicines and
natural medicines/
supplements at the
same time?
What should people watch for?
By Brian Barkow, PharmD

What needs to be stated first is there is

an underlying assumption in the question

that it is completely safe to take traditional (prescription) medicines, natural

medicines or supplements by themselves.

There is a very valid dialogue you should

have with your health care provider
regarding the similarities and differences
between supplements and prescription
medications. Both can be useful and both
can be dangerous. In general, prescription medications are easy to question, but
when it comes to any substance you put
in your body, be very cautious not to let
the words natural and safe be linked
as synonyms.

When taking any

substance, prescription or
supplement, the important
questions to ask are:

1. What is it supposed to do?

2. How does it do so?
3. Is it doing what it is supposed to do?

With these additional questions in mind,

lets address the original question. Yes,
it can be dangerous to take prescription
medications with dietary supplements or
other remedies marketed over the counter
for the following reasons.

Natures Pathways | May 2015

The remedy or supplement you are

interested in taking may have properties
similar to a prescription medication. If
this were the case, it would increase the
overall effect, which could be dangerous.
What is it supposed to do?

Point: The marketed remedy or supplement may behave similarly to the prescription medication.
Many prescription drugs have their
origins from plants and elements found in
nature. Warfarin, a very potent vitamin-K
antagonist (fancy word for slowing down
your blood from clotting), was discovered
in fermented sweet clover. Lovastatin,
a cholesterol lowering medication, was
discovered from Monascus purpureus
(also known as red yeast rice). Digoxin,
an anti-arrhythmic used to control heart
rate, came from digitalis (also known as
foxgloves). Aspirin, a common but potent
anti-platelet (stops platelets from binding),
anti-pyritic (brings down fever), analgesic
(brings down pain) and anti-inflammatory drug, was discovered in the bark and
leaves of the willow tree.
The remedy or supplement you are
interested in taking may have properties
similar to a prescription medication. If this
were the case, it would increase the overall
effect, which could be dangerous.

How does it do so?

Point: The marketed remedy or supplement

may enhance or decrease the prescription medications effect. Or vice-versa, the
prescription drug may enhance or decrease
the supplement/remedys effect.
Even if the supplement or remedy you
are looking to use does not produce the
same effect as the prescription medication,
the method your body uses to remove it
may increase or decrease the amount of
medication in your body. Your body has a
number of proteins, collectively known as
cytochrome P450s it uses to help remove
substances from the body. Substances can
either speed up (induce) or slow down
(inhibit) these proteins. If the supplement/
remedy you take induces the same pathway
your body uses to clear the prescription

that if a remedy produces no effect, it is

safe. Even if it produces no bad effects
there is always a cost involved. The money
for purchasing it, the time in taking it, the
pill burden in additional things to carry
around and swallow, and the emotional
disappointment in not getting the result
you want all are part of this cost. The challenge of this warning is to continually ask
if the substance being taken produces the
effect you need.
If after about a month no positive effect
is seen by you or your doctor, it may be
time to stop the substance.

medication, the amount in your body

will drop faster than the dosing interval
was designed around, reducing the duration of effect your doctor is expecting
you to have and potentially leaving you
untreated. Similarly if the supplement/
remedy you take inhibits the pathway
your body uses to clear the prescription
medication, the amount in your body will
accumulate faster than the dosing interval
was designed around; increasing the effect
your doctor is expecting you to have and
potentially exposing you to dangerous side
Clearly either of these, too little or too
much, can be dangerous.

Is it doing what it is supposed

to do?

Point: The marketed remedy, supplement

or drug may not produce the effect it
Unfortunately it is commonly thought

Its about your health

In summary it is important for you to

engage in dialogue with your doctor,
pharmacist and/or nutritionist regarding
the benefits and risks of any substance
you take. Remember it is your body the
substance is going into. Thus educate
yourself, be your own advocate, question
the sales-pitches, fads and testimonials
and most importantly look into the data
used to make the recommendation. Then
we can come together and make a decision
that is right for you.

Healthy in
spirit: Big
love in a little
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

ebastian lives simply. He gets up in the morning and stretches,

charges down the stairs and waits at the back door for me to
catch up. He zoom, zoom, zooms into the yard and back as
quickly as possible, especially when its cold. On warmer days, its
different. He stops to catch the scents floating on the air, nose up,
tail up, alert for whatever might waft past. Hes a proud young man
almost four years old now he prances across the grass head
high, with a little swagger in his step. I adore him.
Sebastian is 5 pounds of Chihuahua love. I adopted him after
months of thinking about adopting a dog. On that day, I happened
to look online and I saw his face looking right back at me with his
big brown eyes and a pose that suggested a suave and debonair
man about town. He was irresistible, and we adopted each other
within an hour of meeting. After signing a few papers, having
him micro-chipped, and a quick trip to a farm supply store for a

kennel, a leash, and a collar, home we went. In fact, it happened

so quickly that I think we were home before I truly realized what
had just occurred.
The adjustment phase was pretty challenging. I asked friends
to come over to help me through the transition of becoming a
puppy parent. In fact, it reminded me of bringing home a 5-pound,
15-ounce human infant a long time ago! There were definitely
issues. At 3 years of age, Sebastian had never been housetrained.

He seemed afraid of grass at first, and strongly preferred walking

on concrete. I wondered if he had ever walked on grass! And then
there was the barking which hasnt changed.
I wonder what his life was like before me. I know only that he
was removed from a hoarding situation down in Kentucky, and
that by pure luck, he arrived in Oshkosh at a wonderful rescue
called NEW Pawsibilities. I wonder if he misses his former home,
all of the dogs he shared it with, and his human momma, who
clearly overdid a good thing, but undoubtedly did it because she
loved her animals. How sad. I wonder what he thinks about. I
wonder how his tail was broken and set itself in a 90 degree angle
so that when he runs it looks like a little flag. I wonder about the
little notches in his floppy ears and the small scars on his body.
What happened here, and here and here?
There are many questions about Sebastians early life that will
never be answered. Was he happy, was he fed properly, did he play
outside, did he have toys? I think he was loved, because he was
able to bond with me, and I thank his first human momma for
Today, about nine months after adoption, Sebastian lives in his
forever home. He loves to sit on my lap and burrow under our
blanket to keep us both warm. He loves his many toys and spends
hours herding them around the house. He loves walks and treats
and rides, except when going to the vet or the groomer. And he
loves to lie on the carpet in the dining room where the sun comes
in; he half closes his eyes and just soaks up the warmth. Thats
where he is right now.
Sebastian came into my life as the answer to prayer certainly
my own, and maybe Sebastians, too. I love my little guy; he has
brought so much joy into my life. We each have our struggles and
our faults, but we are a match made in heaven. If you are longing
for companionship, if the thought of welcoming a new creature
has been on your mind for a while, I wish you all the best. I hope it
works out for you as it has for me. Get out there and rescue a new
companion animal; s/he will rescue you right back!

Fish oil
By John Sowinski, R.Ph.

once went to a seminar where the speaker said that we now have
a test to determine who should be taking a fish oil supplement.
Here is the simple test: Take your non-dominant hand and place
it in front of you, palm up. Take 2 fingers from your other hand and
put it on your wrist. If you can feel a pulse, you should be taking
a fish oil supplement. The choice of fish oil supplement and how
much you take is very important and can be very confusing.
The health benefits of fish oil are many. These include its ability
to aid in the treatment of various heart diseases, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), a weakened immune system, cancer, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Alzheimers
disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration and ulcers. It also
helps aid weight loss, healthy pregnancy, fertility and skin care
(particularly for conditions such as psoriasis and acne).
Fish oils contain fatty acids that are essential for your health.
Essential has dual meaning. Essential has the obvious meaning
of that it is needed, but in the health sense something is essential when you need to ingest it or your body doesnt make it. For
example, protein is made up of 20 amino acids. They are all essential in that you need these amino acids to make protein. However,
10 of those amino acids are essential in another way and that is
you must ingest them in your food. The other 10 amino acids you
can synthesize/make. You have to ingest these fatty acids as you
cant make them yourself.
When looking at fish oil supplements it is important that contaminants have been removed from the fish oil. Heavy metals such as
lead and mercury are in our oceans naturally as well as a pollutant.
Since this is the fishs environment, they are likely to ingest these
contaminants so they need to be removed. The process to remove
these contaminants is called molecular distillation. When choosing
a product look for a statement that declares that contaminants have
been removed or the words molecular distilled.

Finally, a major consideration is dose. It is important to understand that you should look at the dose of fatty acids and not the
dose of fish oil. For example, a product may say natural fish oil
concentrate 1gm per capsule but that does not mean that the
dose is 1 gram. If you look below, it should have the dose of each
of the fatty acids spelled out. The omega-3 fatty acids that are in
fish oil supplements are eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Now that Ive scared you away with such big names,
these fatty acids are simplified to EPA and DHA. When you look
at the serving size you should add the amounts of each of these
together and then take enough servings that you are taking at least
2 grams of these fatty acids.

The best
investment is
By Martin Rooney

The greatest gift that you were given in life was given to you for
free and that may be why most people dont value it. Heres an
article by Training For Warriors creator Martin Rooney that brings
the message home perfectly. This might be something you want to
share with your clients, too.

hen you were born, you were given the greatest gift in
the cosmos. You were given a life of time. Most people,
however, dont value their time. Perhaps this is because
this great gift was given to us for free. Think you are smart enough
to avoid spending your time? Maybe not.
In fact, many people spend huge amounts of their time each day
without any return on investment. When you spend your time in
front of the TV, searching aimlessly on the Internet, eating the
wrong food or hanging out with the wrong people, you are spending time with no real hope of a positive return.
The short-term return of a cheap laugh, sugar rush, or extra
pound of fat may feel good at the time, but is worthless for a
trainer (or anyone for that matter) in the long term. A successful
life is not created when you simply spend time. Success happens
when you invest your time.
No matter who you are or where you are from, you have something in common with everyone else: you were given 24 hours today,
and the clock is ticking. In your time budget, you are given 24 hours
in a day. Today you, like everyone else, will get 24 hours. What you
do with each 24-hour day added up over your lifetime will determine
your future. If you really understand that, then every hour, minute
and every second becomes valuable. In fact, time is more valuable
than money because you can always get more money, but once your

Natures Pathways | May 2015

time is gone, you cannot have it back. When you invest money, you
should expect a return. The same should be true for your time. The
great news? Investing in your self doesnt need to be a huge lifestyle
overhaul in just a few days or weeks. What counts is gradual progress
with a clear goal in mind of appreciating self-optimization.
Here is my list of 5 things you can do to make sure youre
actively protecting your most important investment:

Eat well

It sounds easy, but for many people, cleaning up ones diet can be a
challenge when confronted with habits, traditions and peer pressures. Going back to our car example, think of it this way: if you
want your car to last as long as possible and run smoothly and efficiently, the clear choice is premium-grade gasoline. Similarly, if
you want your body and health to be at the highest level of performance, only feed yourself premium fuel in natural, whole forms.

Many people these days are concerned with working out more,
multitasking, and trying too hard to do too much. While keeping
busy is not inherently bad, not getting sufficient rest to recover is.
You cant build muscle without rest time to digest it.

Society lately has grown progressively inclined to read short blurbs

about interesting topics because thats what fits on your laptop and
smartphone screens, but that scenario leaves some things to be
desired. Yes, online has rich content (I hope this blog is one of
them), but its also important to dive into good books. The longer

and deeper the material, the more your mind will be stimulated by
its content and the more youll learn and grow.

This is probably a no brainer for those of you reading, but it still

must be mentioned. Exercise keeps your metabolism healthy,
your hormones in balance, your muscles and physiology running
efficiently, and energizes your brain so you can keep learning and
working on yourself every day. Exercise is also really fun, and a
great chance to spend time with friends and build relationships.

Get regular check-ups (dentist/doctor)

It would be a shame for all of your hard work to go to waste

because youre home sick from work! You dont need to obsess,
but knowing where you stand every so often is very empowering
and useful for many situations. This is even more important when
you decide to try some big diet or exercise changes and you want
to know how your physiology is changing. The more informed of
your own health, the better equipped youll be to control it.

Why should you choose a

Is yoga a real
By Lauren Quella and Jayne Lang

hen you hear the word yoga do you think of a room

full of people sitting cross-legged on the floor, eyes
closed and chanting om? Yoga can be very calming
and meditative, but yoga can also be a high-intensity, calorieblasting workout thats not just about stretching.
The type of yoga you practice largely determines the intensity
of your workout. Hatha, or restorative, yoga is a gentle, relaxing
type of yoga involving postures and balance poses. Bikram, or hot,
yoga is done in a room heated to around 105 degrees and includes
a sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. Vinyasa, or
flow, yoga is a fast-paced yoga that uses sequences of poses called
sun salutations. There are also hybrid yoga classes like Yoga Body
Bootcamp and PiYo that take the best of yoga and combine it with
high-intensity cardio intervals and strength work to create a more
challenging, all-in-one workout.
An important benefit of any yoga practice is enhanced flexibility, but it isnt the only benefit. Yoga is one of the best workouts
you can do to build strength. Over the course of a yoga class, all
muscles are activated and worked equally. Instead of using hand
weights or a machine, your muscles are challenged to support
your own body weight in a range of poses from plank to chair. In
addition, almost every yoga pose engages the core, the muscles
that make up your abdomen, back and hips. A stronger core
means improved posture, better balance, reduced back pain and
easier breathing.
Yoga can also help boost your cardiovascular endurance if you
choose a fast-paced Vinyasa yoga class or hybrid yoga class. Yoga
Body Bootcamp provides an effective aerobic workout by rotating
through bootcamp-style stations and performing one exercise for

45 seconds with 15 seconds of rest time. These cardio intervals
will elevate your heart rate as you exert more energy. As with any
aerobic activity, the more high-intensity yoga classes you do, the
more your cardiovascular endurance will improve.
As a workout, yoga classes can burn up to 600 calories in an
hour, depending on the type of yoga. In a Hatha yoga class you can
burn around 189 calories in an hour. Bikram yoga will burn about
477 calories per hour. If you do an hour of Vinyasa yoga, your
calorie burning increases to about 594 calories. How does this
stack up to other forms of exercise? Running for one hour with a
pace of 10 minutes per mile burns 685 calories while walking for
one hour with a pace of 15 minutes per mile burns 350 calories.
There are ways to increase the number of calories burned in
a yoga class. The more you connect your breath to the poses,
the more oxygen you will use, which means the more calories
you will burn. Also, the harder you work into a pose, the more

However, the best part of yoga is what you get out of it that
cant be measured in calories, pounds or minutes. Yoga allows
you to connect your body, mind and spirit so your time on the

the clutter
Cleanliness with kids
is not impossible

amed comedienne Phyllis Diller once said, Cleaning your

house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the
sidewalk before it stops snowing. Many parents realize
that having children means their homes will be filled with a vast
assortment of toys, clothing and other items that seemingly spend
more time scattered across the family room floor than in childrens bedrooms.
Homes where young children lay their heads at night may not
be as tidy as the photos lining home decorating magazine spreads.
But while lived-in family homes may never be spotless, they do
not have to be overrun with clutter, either. Its possible to find a
happy balance with the right strategy and by investing in a few
organizational products.

WORK ONE ROOM AT A TIME. Cleaning up cluttered homes

can seem like a monumental effort when looking at clutter as a

whole. But parents can do themselves a favor by choosing a starting point and tackling the project one room at a time. Find the
room that needs the most work or a space where clutter causes the
biggest headaches. Once you clean such rooms, you may discover
extra motivation to move on to the others.
RESIST THE URGE TO WANDER. One of the obstacles many

people face when attempting to declutter a home is the tendency

to remove an item from one room only to add it to the existing

clutter in another room. For example, if a childs toy is in the living
room, you may walk that toy up to the bedroom and get involved
in tidying up the bedroom, leaving the mess behind in the living
room. When organizing a home, stay in a particular room until
that room is clean. Have designated bins or bags for items that
need to be carried into another room, but only transfer such
containers after a room has been cleaned.
CULL TWICE A YEAR. Children accumulate the greatest number

of new toys on birthdays and holidays. Set a schedule to go through

existing toys prior to these events and sort out the broken, old or
seldom-used items. Donate these toys to preschools, afterschool
programs, family support centers, or babysitting centers at your
office or gym. Whatever cant be salvaged should be put into the
trash or recycling bins.

accessible and seen are easier to find and put away. Develop a
storage system that works for your family. Labeling bins with
words (or pictures for children who cant yet read) helps children
identify where things belong. Find a system that will have longterm functionality and grow with the family. Many stores sell
storage bookcases that blend with home dcor.
TAME THE TOYS. Making too many items available at any

given time can become overwhelming to children. Rotate toys

rather than always buying new ones so that items will be fresh
and interesting. Toys out of the rotation can be stored in a basement or attic. Belongings that are not requested or missed can be
given away. Another idea is to create wishlists for birthdays and
holidays. This way friends and relatives only buy what kids want,
rather than an array of toys that may just end up taking up space.
GET ITEMS OFF OF THE FLOOR. Any organizational system

that can move items vertically is beneficial. Children will become

accustomed to hanging things up rather than leaving belongings
on the floor. Hooks, hangers and shelving mounted on walls, will
free up precious floor space.

with drawers underneath or a toy chest that doubles as a bench can

work well in spaces that need some clutter control.
ESTABLISH A SCHOOL MEMORY BOX. Parents can give each

of their children a plastic bin where they can store memorable

items from school. Not every assignment or drawing sent home
needs to be kept. Reserve the memory box for those special things
that have the most meaning.
Kids and clutter often go hand in hand. However, there are ways
to keep the mess under control.

YOU. And at the same time choose

to reduce and eliminate those things

that are harmful or not beneficial.
Both are required for good health.

We live in a golden age of nutritional information. We also live in a challenging time

of misinformation and too much information. We do not suffer from a lack of information. We suffer from a lack of context.
Consumers are often confused about
nutrition, with good reason.
There are good products and there are
bad, inferior and adulterated products
in the marketplace. How does one
discover the difference?
There are conflicting studies, or studies
that contradict previous studies.
Are eggs good or bad? Who knows
How does one develop a nutritional
program that builds good health? This
is the main objective of good nutrition.
Why is it so confusing?
Pay attention to the science. Thoughtful exploration of the science will help
you determine what type of nutritional
product, program or protocol may be
best for your situation. There are several
websites that help you discover the

differences between nutritional products

in natural health. Its helpful to figure out
which nutrients have credible science and
what that means for you.
There is a difference between medical
and holistic approaches to health. Nutrients are not drugs and drugs are not nutrients. Nutrition does not treat disease,
drugs treat disease. Nutrition nourishes

There are no magical nutrients. When
you are using nutrition and lifestyle to be

such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen

(Aleve) are popular over-the-counter solutions. However, these drugs inhibit the
formation of prostaglandins, which are
necessary for the body to deal with injury
and illness. Excessive use of acetaminophen (Tylenol) sends 56,000 people to the
emergency room yearly. Overuse of any
form of pain killer causes rebound pain
(exaggerated pain response) when the user
attempts to taper back on the drug. Also
consider the risks of addiction from opioid
drugs and the gastrointestinal problems
caused by NSAIDs.
Modern medicine subscribes to the
idea that the body remembers where the
site of pain is and the surrounding nerves
malfunction and continue to send out pain
signals long after the cause is gone.
Holistic medicine has a different point
of view. That is, chronic pain is caused by
chronic inflammation along with some
malfunction of the immune system. This
leads to swelling and irritation of the area
involved. The situation is further complicated with the introduction of toxins into
the body through our diets and environment. These toxins include mercury,
aluminum, arsenic, bisphenol A (BPA) and

It has also been

found that most
chronic pain
sufferers are
deficient in
certain nutrients,
Vitamin D3 and
many others. It has also been found that
most chronic pain sufferers are deficient
in certain nutrients, including Vitamin D3
and magnesium.
The treatment of chronic pain holistically involves a multi-prong approach.
Treatment must begin with detoxifying
the body by using modified citrus pectin,
wheatgrass or spirulina. The dosage must
be controlled carefully as too high of a
dose will release too much toxin into the
body too quickly, and make the patient
physically ill.

As the detoxification takes place,

Vitamin D3 and magnesium are introduced to correct chronic deficiencies
most patients have. Vitamin D3 has a
remarkable effect on the body, acting as a
hormone that reduces inflammation along
with regulating many bodily functions.
Magnesium relaxes tense muscles and
quiets overactive nerve impulses. Indeed,
these two supplements often markedly
improve chronic pain, but much more can
be done.
The immune system function is
improved by the use of probiotics with a
pre-biotic component. It is a little known
fact that 70 percent of the immune system
function originates in the gut. Without
proper flora in the gut, the body is susceptible to many disease processes.
Once the body is stabilized, deficiencies are corrected and the immune system
is improved, herbal treatments can further
reduce inflammation and pain. Commonly
used supplements include curcumin, quercetin, ginger, MSM, boswellia, andrographis paniculata, devils claw, vinpocetine
and bromelain. Many of these herbs are
poorly absorbed by the body, so the patient
must be guided on the proper way to take
the supplements. For example, curcumin
(which is an amazing herb that has over
160 beneficial effects on the body) is best
absorbed when taken with coconut oil or

olive oil or with piperine from black pepper.

However, unlike pharmaceuticals that
act within minutes, this approach to pain
control can take a month or longer to kick
in. The full effect may take as long as 6
months, so patience is definitely needed.
This approach treats the cause of the
pain and not just covering the symptoms
temporarily by taking a pill.
This leads to a significant reduction in
pain without the use of harmful drugs,
expensive doctor visits, invasive surgery or
repeated trips for ongoing care. The basis
for this method is give the body what it
needs and it will heal itself.
Going holistically can improve your
quality of life. It will let you get back to
living a normal life and not be a slave to
your pain. Cheer up there is no reason
for anyone to live like this. Chronic pain
can be cured!

Adrenal health
By Dr. Amy Nussbaum Schubbe

odern womens lifestyles can be stressful juggling

family activities and workforce demands. Throw in a
poor diet, excessive antibiotic use, ongoing screen time,
smoking, indigestion, constipation, undiagnosed food sensitivities, insomnia, worry, etc., and one can spin ones health into a
downward spiral. Our adrenal glands are walnut shaped organs
that sit on top of the kidneys close to the aorta. They secrete
hormones that help our body deal with stress. The outer part of
the adrenal gland is called the cortex and the inner part is the
medulla. The adrenal medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine and the adrenal cortex produces cortisol, aldosterone,
dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and others. Unfortunately, if
our adrenals continue to be chronically stressed a person can go
into adrenal exhaustion and fatigue. Your functional medicine
practitioner can help you uncover this health imbalance by taking
saliva samples at different times of the day to evaluate cortisol,
DHEA and other hormone production. The Adrenal Stress Index
(ASI) is a saliva test that helps to differentiate and identify the level
of adrenal function or dysfunction. After evaluating this circadian
cycle, she or he can recommend supplements to help overcome
this condition. Phosphatidalserine, licorice extract, ashwaganda
and rhodiola are some nutritional supplements to be considered
depending on the pattern of adrenal dysfunction on the ASI.

In addition to supplements, the following

recommendations can be helpful.
Sleep. The bodys physical repair takes place at night.

Without adequate rest the body cannot regenerate itself to

deal with the stresses of the next day. A completely dark room
is helpful to maximize melatonin production.
Identify stessors. Environmental toxins, gluten sensitivity,
toxic emotions, virus and molds, side effects of medications
are all possibilities.

Natures Pathways | May 2015

Avoid coffee or caffeinated beverages. Coffee and

tea act as stimulants and can interrupt sleep patterns if one

consumes too much.
Exercise. Exercise is a great stress reducer and great oxygenator. It is helpful in reducing depression and improving blood
Eat breakfast. If you are low on sugar the adrenals are
instructed to secrete cortisol to increase blood sugar and
allow the body to function. Its imperative to have a healthy
breakfast soon after waking to prevent the body from playing
catchup for the rest of the day.
Maintain glycemic control. An effective way to help
reverse adrenal stress and improve hormone balance is to
balance the amount of carbohydrates and proteins and fats
that are eaten with each meal. Approximately 2 parts carbohydrate to 1 part protein is recommended to help maintain
blood sugar balance.
A professional trained in functional medicine can help the individual test and address adrenal fatigue to achieve improved health.
Lifestyle modification and specific nutritional supplements can
then be recommended to achieving better health.

chronic pain, loss of flexibility or inability to access their usual
liveliness. Sitting and standing while trying to maintain proper
posture becomes an exhausting endeavor because our bodies have
forgotten how to be friends with the downward pull of gravity.
Tension and torque will pull the body off of its healthiest center
of gravity. And yet, this state of being becomes our new normal.
Through the Rolfing SI system and process, a Certified Rolfer
helps a client heal a dysfunctional relationship with gravity by
addressing restrictions within the fascia, or connective tissue, that
surrounds, supports and protects organ systems, muscles, nerves,
and bones in the body. Various fascial segments of the body are
addressed in a particular sequence through hands-on manual
therapy or movement training. By focusing on the fascia in order
to balance the body around a vertical line body history, accumulation of emotional armoring, or chronic tension patterns are
released. One might say the process is akin to a major overhaul
or spring cleaning as the body suitcase becomes less cluttered.
Addressing alignment issues may not only help folks stand taller
and straighter but can also positively affect their bodies on multiple
levels. As bones and muscles can finally do their proper jobs, energy
is freed up as the joints can now move more efficiently. Movement
of the body massages internal organs and creates healthier flow of
respiration, digestion and circulation. This return to homeostasis
enhances the function of the nervous system, which can create
more resiliency by transforming how the body processes stress.
And finally, better balance and body symmetry can shift posture so
dramatically that chronic pain may ease or disappear entirely. Many
individuals who have experienced Rolfing SI have reported changes
in their physical structure to help them connect with themselves
in a deeper way that they feel more alive, more aware, and more
emotionally and spiritually balanced.
Shedding the heaviness and rigidity of winter will help your
body transition more smoothly as you glide, unfurl and expand
into the warmer months. A spacious, flexible, and balanced body
is a more resilient body a happy body that will help you to
effortlessly spring right into summer!

fun instead of financing trips. The following are a handful of ways parents can trim
their families travel costs without sacrificing the quality of their vacations.

simple, but vacationing closer to home is

perhaps the best way for families to save
a substantial amount of money on their
vacations. Airline tickets can take up a
sizable portion of a family vacation budget,
and once the plane touches down families
may need to add the additional expense
of rental cars so they can get around
their destination and enjoy all its sights
and sounds. But families who choose to
vacation closer to home can take their
own vehicles, paying only for gas instead
of airline tickets, car rentals (including
rental insurance) and gas. Find a location
close to home that still offers everyone an
escape, but one thats not far enough away
that car travel will prove burdensome and
OWN MEALS. Dining out is another

considerable expense for families on vacation. Depending on the size of their families, parents may find that their dining
budgets will approach or even exceed the
cost of air travel by the end of a single
week. But parents can drastically reduce
those costs by planning to make some their
own meals while away on vacation. Bring
along a couple of cereal boxes so breakfast
is simple and inexpensive, and try to book
accommodations equipped with kitchens
or outdoor areas where the family can fire
up a grill a few times during the week to
save on costly dinner tabs.
TRAVEL LIGHT. Families who must

travel by air can trim some of the cost of

flying by traveling light. Many airlines now
charge fees for bags that exceed preestablished weight limits and may charge for
additional baggage as well. Leave hefty
jackets and extra footwear behind when
traveling during the warmer months, as
everyone can likely get by with just some
lighter summer attire and less formal
footwear. If traveling to a ski resort in
the winter, consider renting bulky skiing

attire, including boots, so baggage limits

are not exceeded.

Many families may feel they can now plan

their own vacations and save money, but
planning through a travel agency may still
be a familys best bet. When booking trips
via a travel agency, families can often negotiate with a representative, who can work to
tailor a vacation that fits families budgets.
Such negotiation is much more difficult
when going it alone or working through
a travel website. In addition, many travel
agencies include tours and other attractions
in the price of their packages, and that can
be a great way to earn discounts to local
sights and activities.
Travel is expensive, especially for parents
traveling with kids in tow. But costconscious moms and dads can still plan
relaxing and enjoyable vacations without
breaking the bank.

being positioned too far forward relative to

the tops of the shoulders. This forward positioning of the neck and head could be tied
to an old injury, but is usually a result of too
much time spent hunched over a computer
or a smartphone, poor posture due to muscle
weakness or imbalance, or the aging process.
As we reach middle age and beyond the body
naturally begins to lose flexibility and muscle
strength, which leads to the tendency to go
with gravity and let the head and shoulders be weighted down and pulled forward.
In the case of too much time spent at the
computer, sitting for extended periods with
the head and neck locked into a forward and
down position to concentrate on what we are
looking at on the screen will cause the body
to begin to adopt this head positioning as its
default over time.
In both cases, the anterior neck and
shoulder muscles become overtight,
straining the posterior neck and shoulder
muscles and pulling the head and neck
forward. As the head and neck get locked
into a forward position, the back of the
neck and shoulders begin to feel considerable strain, which can cause headaches and
posterior shoulder pain. Whats more, the
anterior scalenes, muscles located at both
sides of the neck, can become overtight,
which also can contribute to headaches
and to anterior shoulder pain that sometimes radiates down the inner arm.
Two shoulder-specific scenarios I
commonly deal with are: shoulder pain
due to overuse, injury, or strain in one or

several of the muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the rotator cuff, and pain due to
localized inflammation in the shoulder as
a result of conditions such as bursitis or
arthritis. In both cases, the pain usually
gets worse the more the shoulder is used
throughout the day. From a traditional
Chinese medicine standpoint, the kind of
pain that gets worse with use, or with the
application of pressure, and feels better
when heat is applied is often due to qi and
blood stagnation (in other words, incredibly stuck energy). Applying tui na techniques that knead, grasp, and push the
tissue of the shoulder and neck, along with
holding acupressure points such that move
stuck energy, provide significant pain
relief. In addition to using tui na (Chinese
medical massage) techniques to begin to
balance the front and back of the neck and
shoulders and acupressure to move energy
that has become stuck as a result of poor
body positioning and mechanics (causing
pain), I work with my clients to help them
become more aware of their posture and
develop lifestyle practices that aim to
counteract and correct the imbalance.

The YMCAs new

personal training
program offers fitness,
fun and friendship

tep foot into any of the YMCA of the Fox Cities facilities and youll
quickly realize: Whatever your weight, fitness level, age or wellness
goals, the Y is the place for you.
But your local Y isnt going to rest on its laurels anytime soon. Just as
individuals need to push their own boundaries to get even better fitness
results, the Y recognizes changes are sometimes necessary to meet
members evolving needs. The organizations newly enhanced training
program is one more way the YMCA of the Fox Cities staff is showing their
dedication to helping everyone reach their wellness goals no matter
what those goals might be.
Eight-year Y member Margaret Burton knows this first-hand. Though
she had long been a fan of the organizations water and land aerobics
classes, she was searching for something new and flexible enough to fit
her changing schedule. In November 2012 she found it: the Ys personal
training program.
But it wasnt easy at first.
I was not an athletic kid; I have not been a particularly athletic adult.
When I started, I felt really unconfident about tackling any of the weight
machines or cardio machines, Burton admits. Its a feeling many Y members
share. The sheer number of fitness options at the Y can be overwhelming
and the personal training staff understands this. Thats why they dont

start their clients on treadmills or weight machines right away, but rather sit
down for an initial get-to-know-you wellness consultation and profile.
The first session, Rachel and I sat down for a good hour and we
talked about what I was feeling good about, and what I wasnt, Burton
explains. She was really good about just listening.
Rachel is Rachel Lenth, a nationally certified trainer at the Y who
motivates, coaches and inspires Burton and other members. Lenth has
a Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion and wellness exercise physiology from the University of WisconsinStevens Point. Lenth
says the consultation is important, but only the first step personal trainers take in understanding the members they work with. Building and
maintaining trust between members and trainers is at the core of every
personal training relationship at the Y.
As a trainer you have to learn to read your client their body
language, how theyre feeling, how much theyre sweating because
every client is different; every client reacts differently to certain activities and encouragement, Lenth explains. Members best interests are
always at the forefront of the trainers minds, and that helps makes the
member-trainer connection a true relationship, rather than an obligation. Both Burton and Lenth, for example, look forward to seeing each
other and working on Burtons goals.

Introducing the new,

completely customized and
well-rounded program
In January of this year, the YMCA of the Fox Cities introduced updates
to its personal training program. Those updates have intrigued trainers, program veterans like Burton and members who havent yet
tried the program alike.
Ive been happy with what weve had but Im really excited
about this, Burton says. She is particularly interested in the new
programs nutrition tracking and information resources. [Check out
the bubble to the right for more features of the Ys personal training
Whats especially great about the new program, according to
Katie Schalk, the YMCA of the Fox Cities wellness coordinator, is that
personal trainers can meet members where they are in terms of fitness
level, experience, barriers to exercise, weaknesses and strengths, and
more. If an individual has already been tracking his or her food or exercise,
or is on a diet, trainers can supplement that. Additionally, trainers also
work with individuals with special needs, those who are recovering from a
major illness or injury (such as a heart attack) or even a recent pregnancy,
and older members whose abilities are changing as they age.
At the same time, trainers can help members who have mastered
the basics and are training for an event, a marathon or a triathalon. Still
others, like Burton, might be looking for something to fit their schedules
and keep them on their toes with always-interesting sessions. After all,
lifes always changing shouldnt your fitness routine?
With Rachel theres an infinite variety of workouts that we can
do, Burton says.

Healthy changes
both big and small
Lenth and Burtons hard work and partnership continue to pay off.
What kind of got me hooked was [Lenth] was able to assess what
I could do, give me things that I could be successful doing, and then
just start raising the bar a little bit and sometimes you dont even
realize its happening until you look in the mirror and, Hey! My clothes
are fitting better. This looks good on me again! A real breakthrough for
me was when my husband started noticing, Burton laughs.
Lenth and Schalk explain that little successes are key
in helping members stick with their long-term goals.
Trainers also make sure to help members celebrate those successes.
But the most rewarding part of personal
training for Burton? Strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, posture: All of
those things have gotten better. But Id
say the No. 1 thing thats gotten better
in my case is my confidence.
Theres no telling what the future
holds for Burton, but one things for
sure: The YMCA of the Fox Cities will
certainly be involved.

What is
By Michelle Landsverk

ave you ever gone to your doctor with an embarrassing

problem? Like, one that you might not tell your mother
about? But one that you might tell your girlfriends
about? Like a problem that you think nobody else would have? A
problem like painful sex?
As women, a lot of us have experienced it, but we tend not
to talk about it. Many women who experience painful sex have
thoughts like, this is supposed to feel good; what is the problem?
Did I do something wrong? Is my partner too big? Is my uterus
tipped? Is it our position during sex? Are my hormone levels the
problem? Worse yet, they may ask the question, Is it my fault?
Because somehow they were made to feel that way by their partner
or caregiver, or society at large.
The situation of pain with intercourse that many women harbor
is called dyspareunia, which is the clinical term for experiencing
pain with attempted vaginal penetration. For some women, that
means that they cannot use a tampon, and for others, they have
pain that either limits vaginal intercourse, or prevents it entirely.
In fact, pain with sexual intercourse is so common that:
40-50 percent of women in the United States have experienced dyspareunia for a period of time shortly after
Another third or so of women have experienced pain with
attempted vaginal penetration not related to pregnancy
And 5-10 percent of women have experienced dyspareunia
ever since their first try at vaginal intercourse.

First and foremost, you need to tell your doctor about it, in order
to make sure that no disease process or hormone issue is the
problem. Your doctor will perform a few tests in order to make
sure that you dont need medical treatment. And when your
health checks out, your doctor will probably refer you to physical
therapy, but if they dont, it doesnt hurt to inquire about it.
The reason is rather simple: our pelvic floor has muscles in it,
just like any other region in our body. If you dont have something that can be treated medically, then chances are, the problem
lies within the pelvic floor musculature. The medical professional
best equipped to help you rehabilitate an injured or dysfunctional
muscle is a physical therapist.

There are plenty of women out there who experience pain with
vaginal penetration, and they think if they just relax itll go away
only to feel extreme disappointment when sex hurts, again and again.
And there is a vicious circle accompanying the problem, whereby the
muscles of the pelvic floor tense up simply by anticipating the pain.
This very real mind and body connection will lead to pain every time
one tries to stretch an already tight muscle. The pelvic floor is meant
to stretch, and when you think about it, you realize the functions of
the pelvic floor muscles include allowing for intercourse and childbirth without catastrophic consequences, for example.
We do, in fact, have conscious control over most of the muscles
in our body (except for muscles in the organs, like the heart
muscle for example). But its easier said than done. One potential
reason is that the muscle is in a state of chronic spasm, meaning,
its not going to relax simply because you want it to. The cycle of
spasm needs to be broken. And this is definitely possible.

So what are you going to do about all this?

Once you have been cleared of any medically treated problem,

the next step is to become aware of your body, specifically the
pelvic floor muscles. Through awareness exercises and muscle
re-education, you will be able to sense when your muscles are in
a relaxed state versus a tense state. You will learn how to relax a
tense muscle, and even how to gently stretch a tense muscle. Your
physical therapist can help you with this process.
The next step is to realize that first you will tolerate penetrative intercourse before it is actually a pleasurable experience.
Meaning, you might achieve vaginal intercourse before it actually feels good. That is not to say that it should hurt, because it
shouldnt. And if it does hurt, then you are not quite ready to be
back in the sack, so to speak.
Finally, realize that there is a solution. You dont need to live
with this.
Michelle Landsverk is a licensed Physical Therapist who specializes in womens health at PT Center for Women. Michelles special
interests include the pregnant client and pelvic pain. From the

level of competition in high school AJ did

not make the team. To his credit, AJ found
a new way to stay close to his friends and to
basketball by becoming the team manager.
As we can all imagine, this was not an easy
transition. AJ did not spend a lot of time
thinking about what was not, instead he
focused on the opportunity his sideline
seat offered. AJ began to learn more about
the game by watching the coaches. In AJs
senior year he was able to celebrate with his
classmates as they became the only team in
school history to play in the state tournament in Madison. At the award celebration
the head coach shared AJs story expressing
his appreciation to him. AJ had become an
expert at breaking down game video. AJ
was much more than a manager, he was
considered an assistant coach. Some might
think that AJs goals had been achieved. AJ
had other ideas.
During his time on the sideline he realized he wanted to be a coach someday. He
was aware that he would need to gather
some excellent experience as he could not
include on his resume that he had played
basketball. AJ set his sights on a big arena,
UW Madison. With a little help AJ was
able to become a volunteer manager for
UW Madisons mens basketball team. One
of AJs jobs was to sit under the basket and
mop up sweat off the court. This is where
this writers facts get a bit thin, so lets jump
a couple of years forward. AJ now had

worked his way up through the various manager duties to being

able to sit at the end of the bench and help coaches and players
during timeouts. Once again, AJ had an amazing opportunity to
watch and learn from players and coaches, not to mention that one
of them was future hall of fame, Big Ten coach Bo Ryan. It might
be said that AJ had gotten what he had come for an amazing
education and the elite experience he had wanted in order to be
able to be a coach for himself.
AJ again continued to hold his intention and focus his attention
with persistence and passion. As a result, AJ currently is the University of Madison Mens Basketball Video Coordinator. AJ is now in a
suit and tie, sitting at the front of the bench, contributing his expertise
to the game. He has traveled across the country and internationally,
shared his love for the game with family, friends, and past coaches, he
has been to two Final Four tournaments and he is living his dream.
Beyond the feel good connection, this story is a demonstration of
having an intention and giving it your attention. Having an intention
is similar to having a dot on the map, knowing your destination.
Who of us doesnt work more effectively when we know where we
are going? Having an intention alone is the same as insight without
action; the potential for things happening decreases. On the other
hand, intention with attention is a powerful combination. Attention
is our ability to bring our awareness and energy to what is in front of
us or what we want to create. How can you get started? One way is
a vision Board. There are many websites that give impressive ideas
for creating a vision board. Then its important to check in regularly
to see what your life choices and energies are actually going toward,
and ask the question, What have I been paying attention to? as a
quick way to check in.
As a therapist I work with people who are actively seeking
healing or more productive ways to experience their lives. It is
vital to empower people to connect to an intention that might be
a clearer picture of themselves feeling better or feeling fulfilled
in their life and relationships. Holding this intention can be a
wonderful resource as a person heals, an excellent motivator and
a beacon of hope as to what is possible. People can then support
their intention by noticing just how much attention they give to
it. Is the focus on what is not wanted (for instance the anxiety,
depression, or feelings of not being enough) or is the focus on the
gifts, talents, options and choices I do have?
Spring is a time of new life and growth. Is this your time to set
an intention and to begin growing it with your attention? Happy

Community Benefit Tree is a great place to start, Quaintance

Is an estrogen
detox right for
A functional medicine approach
By Scott Vander Wielen, DC

e are all exposed to man-made chemicals. Whether it

is in our drinking water, shampoos, soaps, cleaners, or
in many of the lawn care pesticide/weed killer products, and even directly in our food supply, you can be very certain
that just about any household goop will contain estrogens that
we will absorb into our systems.
These estrogens are xenoestrogens (xeno meaning strange)
and have a negative impact on our health because they can be 500
to over 1,000 times more potent than the estrogen that is naturally
made in the body. For example, the environmental estrogen BPA,
which was accidently discovered by researchers, has an enormous
impact on health. The estrogenic effects of BPA on cancer cells
were so strong that scientists observed cancer cells multiplying
that were taken from cadavers and the concentration of the BPA
was one-ten thousandth of the concentration of estrogen required
to stimulate cancer cell growth. Since this discovery, a great deal
of research has been published regarding what BPA does in the
body. Thankfully, Governor Doyle signed legislation banning

BPA in infant-related plastics starting in June of 2010. BPA is still

very present in our daily lives despite the new law. This is just
one example of why we should pay attention to the environmental
estrogens we come in contact with every day.
An estrogen detox can be beneficial to both men and women.
Yes, even men! A 2010 article of the National Institute of Health
Toxicology Letter concluded that BPA reduced testosterone
production significantly through the pituitary gland. When estrogen affects mens testosterone levels, this suddenly is no longer
a laughing matter. Erectile dysfunction, and yes, man boobs, are
frequently the biggest impacts it can have on men. Prostate problems with urination is also a signal of estrogen dominance. Do
you want to build more muscle? Do you want to have full and
lasting erections? Do you want to lose the man boobs? If you
answered yes to any of the previous questions, then an estrogen detox is part of the solution for you. It is worth noting that
Olympic athletes do estrogen detoxes so their bodies can make
more testosterone naturally. Removing environmental estrogens
is vital to having healthy hormone function in men.
As for women, just because estrogen is considered a womans
hormone, doesnt mean more is better. Excessive bleeding in
monthly cycles, premenstrual breast swelling, premenstrual
abdominal bloating, premenstrual irritability, breast tenderness,
fat distribution to the hips or thighs, endometriosis, ovarian cysts,
breast cancer, periods that occur too frequently, lower back pain,
high anxiety and headaches associated with the monthly cycle are
excellent examples of estrogen toxicity in females. Additionally,
hot flashes are an estrogen toxicity symptom for many women.
Estrogen is a general term to include a whole family of molecules
similar enough in structure to be called an estrogen. We all need to
metabolize estrogen every day in a healthy way, and that includes
eliminating the harmful estrogens. There are natural occurring
estrogens, 16-hydroxyestrone and 4-hydroxy estrone that have

been associated with cancer. This estrogen is very reactive in the

body and its counterpart, 2-hydroxyestrone, is the nonreactive,
beneficial estrogen. A 2002 article in the Medical Journal, Alternative Medicine Review, was able to show that the relative risk of breast
cancer nearly doubles based on the value of the 2/16 estrogen
ratio. Additionally, many xenoestrogens, including BPS is metabolized through the 4-hydroxy estrone pathway, which must be fully
functional in order to metabolize these estrogens out completely.
If you are concerned about reducing your risk for cancer, and have
cancer in your family history, then an estrogen detox on a regular
basis may be very beneficial for you.
Healthy levels of estrogen in men and women are vital for our
health. More estrogen is not better, and has clearly been shown to
be harmful to both men and women in several ways. Removing
the environmental estrogens benefits both men and women and is
an excellent way to balance hormones without taking hormones.

in Outagamie County
By Christine Miller

azardous household materials are

usually found in our garages and
basements, and we often overlook
our craft rooms, workshops and under the
kitchen sink. These products are usually
labeled with words such as caution,
warning, danger, poison, flammable,
combustible or corrosive.
These hazardous materials can threaten
the quality of our drinking water, increase the
threat of algae bloom and threaten the safety
of sanitation workers. In addition, hazardous

Eliminate pain
By Kim Neher, MS, Clinical Nutritionist

e have all experienced the uncomfortable pains of

overeating in our lives, but could what you eat really
be the culprit of arthritis, muscle pain, fibromyalgia,
digestive and skin disorders as well? Yes, in fact, it can be to blame.
Scientists are making a strong link between our food choices and
pain. Over 70 percent of our immune cells are in our digestive
system, making direct contact with the food we enjoy every day. If
the immune system is triggered by bacteria in food, flags a food as
an allergen, or has an imbalance of important hormones such as
insulin, it can set off the red alert of inflammation.
Inflammation is a major underlying factor in chronic conditions such as arthritis or poor digestive health, resulting in serious
discomfort and a limited lifestyle. In other instances, inflammation is a periodic byproduct of stress and the proverbial wear and
tear of living. At times we tax our bodies excessively, causing joint
pain and decreased mobility. And yet, there are occasions where
the stressful demands of work and family the unexpected
obstacles that are symptoms of financial and personal hardship,
unhealthy diet and too little sleep manifest themselves through

Persistent, systemic inflammation also increases a persons risk

of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and an assortment of other problems that become more likely as we age. More
disturbing is the rise in the use of prescription drugs many of
which have serious long-term side effects as a response to the
growing threat of inflammation. Bottom line? Inflammation is the
root of all chronic disease. How inflammation becomes visible in
our own health will depend on the person.
There are immediate steps we can all take to reduce inflammation, starting with improved eating habits. Sufficient rest, moderate activity and a strong immune system also complement our
dietary choices so that we can better control inflammation when
it strikes. Diet is critical! Amidst the far-too-numerous types of
processed foods, sugary drinks and oversized meals, we must seize
any chance to embrace the benefits of sound nutrition. When you
eat foods youre sensitive to (especially over and over each day
or week), it causes an inflammatory reaction in your body and
your health declines. And an important fact to note is that healthy
foods such as squash, turkey, beans and apples, for example, may

ELIMINATE PAIN WITH FOOD continued from page 47

be your personal poison foods causing the inflammation.

The easiest way to discover your food sensitivities is a food
sensitivity lab test. Its a blood test that challenges the part of your
immune system responsible for food sensitivities against different
foods to determine your immune response. The strength of the
response tells if you have a severe, moderate or mild sensitivity or
none at all. You can choose to test up to 200 different foods, with
results listing all your sensitive foods, the degree of sensitivity and
your safe foods. Its that simple. Imagine how long it would take
to test that many foods on an elimination diet! It is not a matter
of whether a person has food sensitivities. In my experience, how
many and which foods are what the blood test results show. The
solution to pain is choosing to support your immune system with
your next meal. We eat numerous times throughout the day, every
day. Your next bite of food has the power to help, or the power to
heal. Which would you prefer?

Taking fitness
and health to
By Eileen Menacher

f someone would have told me that

once I reached my 30s I would be able
to execute a pull up, flip over in the
air, or hold multiple variations of planks,
I probably would have thought they were
crazy. The best part is I can do all of those
things, and I gained the strength (and
courage!) to do them by taking aerial
hammock classes.
About two years ago I saw a picture in
a fitness magazine of a beautiful aerialist hanging upside down by her hips and
leg in an aerial hammock. She looked
strong, flexible and completely relaxed.
This picture captured everything I wanted
for myself so I sought out local aerial
hammock classes.
Honestly, I didnt know what to expect
at my first aerial class. Ive never been
very athletic, but I had been a regular
gym member and lived a healthy lifestyle.
Group fitness classes, cardio equipment
and weight machines kept me fit, but I
always felt like something was lacking.
My first sensation of aerial hammock was
nothing I had ever felt before. The strong
hammock fabric intertwines with your
body to give you a deep tissue massage and
assists you with aerial poses. It had been
quite a long time since I had hung upside
down on the monkey bars so inversions

were a little scary. Strength and balance

were key components to this aerial practice both of which I wasnt very good at.
At the end of my first class it didnt matter
because I truly had fun! I was in awe with
this physical activity that was beautiful and
As I continued to regularly attend aerial
classes, I noticed many positive changes to
my body, including diminishing back pain.
The aerial inversions allowed my spine to
decompress and elongate, while grounded
static stretches with the hammock increased
flexibility. The suspended hammock enabled
me to sink deeper in my movement without
negatively impacting joints, making it safer
and more effective than grounded exercises.
My physique started to become more toned
due to my increasing strength. I felt strong,
free and healthier than any other physical
activity I had tried.
Aerial hammock also provided some
much needed mental benefits. It helped

to relieve stress and over time, helped me

to address some of my fears and anxiety.
Aerial hammock has given me the tools to
help calm my mind when anxious feelings
creep in, and to trust myself and my own
potential. For once I was able to focus on
my body both inside and out.
After experiencing my life positively
change for a year, I decided to become a certified aerial hammock instructor in February
2014 to help others feel the same way about
hammock as I did. Even after practicing for
the past two-plus years, aerial hammock is
never boring to me. Surprise yourself try
something different! Only when you believe
you can fly can you defy gravity!

foot up
By Joette A. Wheeler

e reference our feet in curious and sometimes humorous

ways. Phrases such as, To set ones foot down, under
foot, foot the bill, off its feet, to put ones foot into it,
enter our conversations often. However, the health of our feet may
not enter our consciousness until something happens. Then we are
forced to think seriously about this important part of our body.
Awareness of the health of our feet can be pivotal as foot problems can serve as a warning signal for arthritis, diabetes and
circulatory or nerve problems. It is in our best interest that we
follow a lifestyle that promotes healthy feet.
In a recent comprehensive Internet article, The National Institute on Aging gives the following ideas on being conscious of your
feet health:
Take a look at your feet often
Use a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet
Look for cuts, blisters and ingrown toenails
Ask a member of your family for help if you need it
If you have diabetes, be sure to check your feet every day
Remember to put your feet up when you are sitting down
this helps the circulation in your feet, as well as stretching,
walking or having a gentle foot massage
The National Institute on Aging reminds that we should make
sure our shoes fit, we choose a shoe that fits the shape of our feet,
and that we make sure that there is one half inch between our toe
and the end of our shoe. As many of us are aware, one of our feet
can be bigger than the other so we need to make sure to buy shoes
that fit the larger foot. Shoe size can change as we age, so it is wise
to have our feet measured before buying shoes. And the best time
to measure feet is at the end of the day when our feet are largest.
Common foot problems include: fungal infections, corns and
calluses bunions, ingrown toenails, neuromas, hammertoes, spurs

and swollen feet. Diabetes or peripheral artery disease can cause

poor blood flow to the feet. This, in turn, can mean that injuries to
the feet can cause infection.
As we head into spring, good foot care becomes increasingly
important as we want to age comfortably. Lets put our best foot
forward with care and regular health checks. More enlightening
information on foot care can be found on the The National Institute
of Agings AgePage under foot care.
The above article was written by Joette Wheeler, a retired community support worker
for Outagamie County Department of Human Services and a client of Heavenly Foot
Care LLC. It is in reference to the services of a foot care hygienist Suzie Bellavance,
owner of Heavenly Foot Care LLC in Appleton. Suzie is a Quebecoise who has lived

is yoga
By Crystal M. Hill

oga nidra is often referred to as yogic sleep. Think of it

as having the body be asleep, but the brain in an active
state of consciousness. Nidra is different from meditation
in that during meditation, you do not leave the waking state of
consciousness into a state of dreaming. In nidra, you experience
a state of extreme meditation that goes beyond relaxation and
allows you to pass through the dream state into a deep sleep state,
but still remain awake.
Yoga nidra has been practiced for thousands of years by yoga
sages. The purpose of this practice is to instill calmness, reduce
tension and provide extreme relaxation of the nervous system. It
can also assist in bringing clarity and helping find purpose as your
mind processes thoughts while you rest.

What will I do during yoga nidra?

1. Set aside at least 20 minutes for yoga nidra. You may want

to begin with a few yoga asanas or stretches, then relax on

the floor or on a yoga mat in Corpse Pose (lying flat with
arms and legs open from the sides of the body). The key
here is to get comfortable, so use a pillow under your head,
a mask or towel over your eyes, and a bolster under your
knees, if needed.
2. Set an intention. This might be a thought, a dream or

ccording to the Wisconsin Department of Natural

Resources (WDNR), spring is the worst time of year for
wildfires. While local ordinances and state regulations
govern outdoor burning, open burning, burn barrels and fire
pits are common throughout northeast Wisconsin. Although the
WDNR strongly discourages individual property owners from
outdoor burning, should you engage in outdoor burning, be sure
to follow these rules and tips.
Only dry, clean and untreated paper and wood products which
are not recyclable are legal to be burned in Wisconsin. As nearly all
paper and cardboard is recyclable in northeast Wisconsin, there
are few instances when burning paper and cardboard is acceptable. Clean, dry and untreated wood, brush, leaves, needles and
grass are allowable to be burned. However, the WDNR encourages alternatives such as composting or leaving vegetative debris
on the ground to burning this organic material.
Many materials are prohibited from being burned in Wisconsin.
These include: garbage, plastics, electronics, shingles, asphalt, foam,
furniture, carpet, wire, metal, aluminum, vinyl products, rubber
products (including tires), oil-based products and painted or
treated wood. Burning prohibited materials can emit dioxins, acid
vapors, carcinogenic tars and heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium
and chromium), as well as unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide.
Depending upon the county in which you reside (or burn
in, if you engage in open burning when visiting up north, for
instance), a state burning permit may or may not be required.
Certain counties require a state burning permit all year, others
only from Jan. 1 to May 31 and for some counties the WDNR
does not regulate burning permits. However, residents must also
comply with local ordinances, which may be more restrictive than
state law. If you are uncertain about the regulations governing
your community, start with your local municipal office or go to

Natures Pathways | May 2015 and search fire.

Campfires, used for cooking or warming purposes, do not
require a state burning permit and are allowable anytime except
during Emergency Burning Restrictions. Nevertheless, local ordinances can still prohibit all outdoor burning, including campfires
or outdoor fireplaces.
Once you obtain any necessary burning permits, adhere to the
restrictions on the permit. Keep an area free of flammable material ten feet around the burn pile, barrel or pit. Always have water
and firefighting tools on hand when you burn, and never burn
when it is windy. In addition, never leave your fire unattended and
make sure it is cold before you leave.
According to the WDNR, if your fire escapes and starts a wildfire, you may be held liable for all suppression costs. Further, any
person whose property is injured or destroyed by your fire, may
also recover the value of timber or damages suffered in a civil
action lawsuit.
As of March 30, Wisconsin has experienced 145 wildfires which
have consumed over 300 acres. Managing yard and waste materials via composting, recycling or even landfilling are all preferred
methods to open burning. If you choose to engage in outdoor
burning, be sure to follow all rules and regulations and be safe to
protect Wisconsins environment!

response of the immune system. Mayo Clinic describes: When you

have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful, even though it isnt. In the
realm of homeopathy, the homeopath views allergies as a pattern
of stuck energy and the allergic symptoms as the bodys attempt to
regain balance. The application of homeopathic remedies helps to
stimulate the bodys own vitality to produce a healing result. Therefore, a second application of homeopathy for allergies is to consult
a professional homeopath. Through a consultation, a professional
homeopath will take a complete inventory of your symptoms and
help provide guidance as to which homeopathic remedies could
be useful for your concern. The homeopathic process addresses
the root cause of allergies; and applying appropriate homeopathic
remedies in that manner can bring about long-term healing from
suffering. Homeopathy acts on an energetic level, therefore it has
a broad effect, shifting mental, emotional and physical symptoms
in a positive direction. Homeopathy helps by increasing the individuals strength and resistance.

Appreciating your
unique style
By Lisa Klarner

ave you ever met a person who

thrives on being around people
and never seems happy unless she
or he is socializing? A person who receives
energy from people is considered an extrovert. An extrovert will thoroughly enjoy
attending a party and will leave filled with
a mixture of energy (from socializing) and
sadness (because the party is over).

An introvert, on the other hand, gains

energy from being reflective. She or he
will attend social functions, but will leave
exhausted and ready for some alone time.
Introverts lean away from large group
functions and prefer a small gathering or
to curl up behind a book at home. Many
times introverts are perceived as shy, but
this may or may not be the case. A person

who is shy is afraid of people while an

introvert simply doesnt want to be around
large groups of people too much.
Introverts are very self-aware and pay attention to internal feelings and thoughts. Extroverts pay more attention to what is happening
outside of their body and mind. They enjoy
being the center of attention and are more
talkative than their introvert counterpart.

When we look at introversion and extroversion in relation to kids, parents may have
a child who can play for hours alone and
be completely content and happy. While
another child may have a continuous need
for interaction with a sibling or a friend.
The difficulty for parents is often a difference in personality styles. For example, if a
parent is extroverted, she may expect her
child to also thrive on having a busy social
calendar. Or, the parent of an introverted
child may think that their child is shy

Coming back to you and your personality, the biggest first step is recognizing how

is value in both personalities. Society often
puts more attention on extroverts because

Jane keeps her

home spring

hh, spring. Theres just something

about those first few warm days
of the year that make me itch to
throw open the windows, organize my j
unk drawer, hang clothes out on the line
and scrub every surface in my house.
Yet despite the hours I spend each year
making sure every room is spick-andspan, there is always one spot I never can
get quite clean: The carpet.
I have vacuumed. I rented a carpet
cleaner. I got down on my hands and knees

and scrubbed! Still, I could tell it didnt

get the job done. My allergies were worse
indoors, spots on the carpet returned after
Id scrubbed them out it was maddening!
Thankfully, before I lost my sanity
completely, I took a friends advice and
called Chem-Dry.

A true clean with true

customer service

My first introduction to Chem-Dry was

meeting Randall Glaze, owner of the

Appleton-Oshkosh franchise. Randall put

me at ease right away. I could tell from his
passion for his job, friendly nature and
utmost professionalism that he cared just
as much as I do about the look and feel of
not only my carpet, but my entire home.
Prior to his visit, we discussed the
problems Id been having the allergies,
the stubborn spots and stains, and the
general unclean feeling my carpet gave me.
Randall tailored his approach to cleaning
based on our conversation. He explained
that Chem-Drys cleaning process removes
98.1 percent of common household allergens, like cat and dog dander and dust
mite allergens.* Plus, when we add ChemDrys sanitizer to the cleaning process, that
removes an average of 89 percent of the
bacteria in the air and 82.3 percent of the
bacteria from carpets.
Then Randall addressed my carpets stains.
He explained that the cleaning methods Id
used before essentially set me up for failure.
While my unique spot-cleaning blend of
vinegar, hot water and dish soap might
remove dirt for a little while, the soap residue
left behind collected dirt, which is why those
spots always seemed to reappear.
Randall explained that those stains would
come out with Chem-Dry cleaning (and they
did!). He also introduced me to Chem-Drys
Professional Strength Spot Remover to hold
me over between cleanings. This cleaner
safely removes soil and stains without leaving
behind any soapy or foamy residue.

Fast and environmentally friendly

Ive used carpet cleaning services in the past but they always
seemed like such a hassle. Not only would we have to move all our
furniture, our carpets stayed wet for days. Thats simply not the
case with Chem-Dry.
Thanks to their unique equipment as well as cleaning process and
products, no water reaches the carpet pad (where it can lead to mold
and mildew). Plus they use only a fraction of the water a typical steam
cleaning service would use. Our carpet was dry to the touch within
two hours and it was great knowing I wasnt wasting a ton of water.
So how does it work? Carbonation! Chem-Drys cleaning solution is heated to 200 degrees and applied with a special buffing
vacuum. The carbonated solutions bursting bubbles bring dirt
and other nasty things up to the top of the carpet, where theyre
suctioned up and away.
Chem-Dry uses a unique product called The Natural, which is
made up of natural, nontoxic, safe ingredients like plant extracts.
Its green-certified and great for kids and people with allergies or
asthma. It is great to know that I can crawl around on the carpet
with my baby niece and not have to worry about any harsh chemicals affecting either of us.

Wonderful results

To say I was impressed with Randall and Chem-Dry is an understatement. Im absolutely thrilled with my carpet and the experience I had. Im no longer sneezing through the night, and the
stains on my carpet are gone and have yet to return.
Not only have I recommended Chem-Dry to my friends and
family, I will be scheduling my next cleaning with Chem-Dry
right away. In addition to cleaning and protecting carpets, ChemDry also offers upholstery, rug, tile, grout and stone cleaning, as
well as other great services like pet urine odor treatment, specialty
stain cleaning and leather care.
An extra incentive that makes trusting in Chem-Dry even
better? When I refer a friend to them, I and that friend both earn
$20 toward a cleaning.
So if youre looking for an environmentally friendly clean for
your home in spring or any other season, contact Chem-Dry
today; tell them Jane sent you!

Weight loss
and blood
sugar control
is as easy
1, 2, 3
By Grandma Rose

f you want to lose weight and get your blood sugar under
control, an eating plan that is very low in carbohydrates will
do the trick. The lower the carbohydrate content of the food
you eat each day, the lower your blood sugar will be and the more
quickly you will lose weight.
This is the list of carbohydrate foods in descending order.
Number one will have the highest carbohydrate effect and it goes
down from there.
1. Sugar of all forms, including honey and maple syrup and
anything made with sugar
2. Flour and anything made with flour
3. Starchy foods, including potatoes and rice
4. Bananas, pineapple, watermelon, grapes
5. Other melons
6. Apples, pears and peaches, oranges, grapefruit (fruit juice
is like sugar)
7. Dry beans of all kinds
8. Yogurt and milk the lower the fat content, the higher
the carbohydrate count.
9. Vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, spinach, kale,
lettuce and berries
10. Protein, meat, eggs and cheese
Fat and fiber have no carbohydrates and do not affect blood sugar.
Eating fat and fiber with carbohydrates will slow the digestion
of the carbohydrates and lessen their effect on blood sugar and
To get blood sugar under control and lose weight, simply turn
the above list upside down. Eat Nos. 10, 9, 8, 7 and 6, and have a
little from Nos. 5 and 4. You will be well-nourished and feel great
as your blood sugar will go down your weight too!

You dont need to eat any foods from Nos. 3, 2 or 1 to be wellnourished. Buy large containers of plain yogurt and sweeten with
Splenda or Stevia. Add your own fruit. Small containers of yogurt
have added sugar. Use fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Do
not juice vegetables as fiber is removed and the juice is higher in
carbohydrates. Processed foods contain added sugar and starches.
With these simple rules you should not be hungry, have to count
carbs or calories to lower blood sugar and weight.
Adding Hi-Maize 260 to the foods you eat will help make you
feel full, burn fat, lower cholesterol and help keep blood sugar
under control.

oldenseal, also called yellow root,

is a plant that grows wild in parts of
the United States but has become
endangered by overharvesting. With natural
supplies dwindling, goldenseal is now
grown commercially across the United
States, especially in the Blue Ridge
Historically, Native Americans have used
goldenseal for various health conditions such as skin
diseases, ulcers and gonorrhea. Currently, folk or traditional uses
of goldenseal include colds and other respiratory tract infections,
infectious diarrhea, eye infections, vaginitis (inflammation or
infection of the vagina), and occasionally, cancer. It is also applied
to wounds and canker sores and is used as a mouthwash for sore
gums, mouth and throat.
The underground stems or roots of goldenseal are dried and
used to make teas, liquid extracts and solid extracts that may be
made into tablets and capsules. Goldenseal is often combined
with echinacea in preparations that are intended to be used for

What the science says

Few studies have been published on goldenseals safety and effectiveness, and there is little scientific evidence to support using it
for any health problem.
Clinical studies on a compound found in goldenseal, berberine,
suggest that the compound may be beneficial for certain infections
such as those that cause some types of diarrhea, as well as some
eye infections. However, goldenseal preparations contain only a
small amount of berberine, so it is difficult to extend the evidence
about the effectiveness of berberine to goldenseal.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health
(NCCIH) is funding research on goldenseal, including studies
of antibacterial mechanisms and potential cholesterol-lowering
effects. NCCIH is also funding development of research-grade
goldenseal, to facilitate clinical studies.

Natures Pathways | May 2015

Side effects and cautions

Goldenseal is considered safe for short-term

use in adults at recommended dosages. Rare
side effects may include nausea and vomiting.
There is little information about the safety of high dosages or the
long-term use of goldenseal.
Goldenseal may cause changes in the way the body processes
drugs, and could potentially alter the effects of many drugs.
Other herbs containing berberine, including Chinese goldthread (Coptis trifolia) and Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium),
are sometimes substituted for goldenseal. These herbs may
have different effects, side effects and drug interactions than
Note: Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid
using goldenseal. Berberine, a chemical in goldenseal, can cause
or worsen jaundice in newborns and could lead to a life-threatening problem called kernicterus.
Goldenseal should not be given to infants and young children.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary health approaches, see NCCIHs Time to Talk
