It is my pleasure, on behalf of Uxbridge Township Council and Staff, to present our

Spring/Summer 2015 Community Guide.
As spring approaches, it brings with it many exciting opportunities to experience
all sorts of wonderful recreational activities. Visit our trails and experience the
wonder of nature coming alive after a winter sleep. We are very excited about the
wide variety of programs that we are presenting to the public. We encourage you
to get out and enjoy the activities in the community. It is a wonderful way to
become involved in everything that Uxbridge has to offer, as well as meeting new
people.
I would like to thank the many volunteers who, through their tireless efforts and
dedication to our community, are a major reason Uxbridge has such a broad array
of well-run and progressive programs.

Uxbridge Multi-Use Trails

Hundreds of kilometres of trails,

just minutes from your doorstep
Countryside Trails

Countryside Preserve

Over 200 kilometres of trails run through Uxbridge Township, including:

East Duffins Headwaters Area
Durham Regional Forest
Oak Ridges Trail
Trans Canada Trail
These countryside trails run through natural forested sections of the Township, with
great opportunities for hiking, walking, mountain biking, geocaching and equestrian.
Managed by a variety of trail partners, the countryside trails are growing, including new
off-road sections of the Trans Canada Trail, and enhancements to the network of trails
connecting south to the City of Toronto and Lake Ontario.

Visit this 140-acre preserve of rolling hills, woods, streams, ponds and meadowlands,
where the countryside meets the town at Conc. 6 and Hwy. 47. With art pedestals,
interpretive ecology displays, and over six kilometres of trails, there is something for
everyone at the Countryside Preserve.

Please clean up after your pet and keep on leash at all times. Carry out all litter with
you. Respect the natural environment and private property by staying on the trail.
Please, no motorized vehicles.

Geocaching

Town Trails
Uxbridge also boasts a host of urban and forest town trails connecting our
neighbourhoods.
The 10 Town Trails include:
Barton Trail (2 km)

Historic Trail (2.4 km)
Maple Bridge Trail (1.5 km)

Adult Fitness
Uxbridge Full Circle Jiu-Jitsu

Learn to Scuba Dive with Larry Olson:

Jiu-Jitsu is a practical martial art that is a mix of judo throws, karate strikes, Aikido joint
locks & pressure points, as well as ground-fighting techniques. Those that are familiar
with watching MMA fights on TV will recognize many of these moves. Jiu-Jitsu is based
on using an attackers weight and
strength against them. Therefore,
a small person, male or female,
with Jiu-Jitsu experience can
overcome a much larger attacker,
making it a very effective form of
self-defense in what could be a
dangerous situation. Classes for
men and women Age 12+ take
place on Monday and Wednesday
nights from 8:15 pm to 9:15 pm

Leadership Programs

How do I become a
Lifeguard and Swim
Instructor?
Step 1: Bronze Medallion
Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components
of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows,
carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk.
Lifesavers learn to respond to increasingly complex situations involving conscious and
unconscious victims with an obstructed airway. Lifesavers develop fitness and
endurance in a timed swim.
Pre-requisite: 13 yrs. of age and/or Bronze Star

Step 2: Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR C

This is designed to challenge the lifesaver in a more advanced setting. This course
teaches the difference between lifesaving and life guarding, the principles of emergency
procedures and teamwork. Lifesavers learn how to rescue a spinal injury victim as well
as multiple victim rescues.
Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion

Step 3: AWSI: Assistant Water Safety Instructor

This leadership course is designed to reinforce swimming skills and knowledge. It
introduces the candidate to basic instructional and leadership concepts.
Pre-requisite: 15 yrs. of age or older and Swim Kids 10

Step 4: WSI and LSSI: Red Cross Water Safety AND

Lifesaving Society Instructor
This is a course designed to further develop instructional and leadership concepts.
Candidates experience, analyze and apply the Red Cross program curriculum. This course
prepares instructors to teach the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medal awards and
Emergency first aid as offered by the Lifesaving Society
Pre-requisite: 16 yrs. of age, current Bronze Cross and a current AWSI certification.
**Full attendance is mandatory

STEP 5: Maintenance Recertification Every two years to

maintain active status
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Recertification

These include timed items.

Step 4: NLS: The National Lifeguard Service Award

This award builds on the fundamental principles taught in the previous lifesaving
awards. It is recognized as the standard of lifeguard performance in Canada. NLS
education is designed to develop a sound understanding of life guarding principles,
good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude towards the role of a lifeguard.
Pre-requisites: Bronze Cross, 16 yrs. of age (minimum) and a current Standard First
aid. **Full attendance is mandatory

SWIM LESSONS: FREE LEVEL ASSESMENT

Unsure what level your child is in? Uxpool offers free level assessments during any public
swim to accurately tell you what swimming level you should register your child in. Uxpool
offers the Red Cross Program featuring a preschool and Swim Kids program for all ages.

"Admission Standards for Public Pools" were developed by the Office of the Coroner of
Ontario to assist Lifeguards and Assistant Lifeguards in maintaining adequate
surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are
inside the pool enclosure. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care strongly
support these recommendations for the purpose of preventing injuries and fatalities.
1. Children 6 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
12 years of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for their direct
supervision and must be in the water and within arms reach of the child(ren) at all
times.
2. Children 7 to 9 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years
of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for direct supervision & must
be in the water. If the child can swim and pass a facility swim test, the parent or
guardian does not have to remain within arms reach of the child, however, must
remain in the pool enclosure to provide supervision of the children and remain in
visual contact.
3. Children 10 years and older may swim without adult accompaniment.

SHOWER BEFORE SWIMMING

A thorough shower before you enter the pool will help keep the water clean for your
swimming enjoyment.
Strollers are not permitted in the change rooms or on deck. If you require one, please
ask at the office and one will be provided for you (limited strollers available).

FOOD AND BEVERAGES

Food and beverages are NOT permitted on the pool deck or in the change rooms.
The only exception made is non breakable water bottles.

TO DIAPER OR NOT TO DIAPER

We ask that disposable diapers are not worn into the swimming pool. We request that

minimum class numbers or the request is past the fourth lesson.
b. Refund/credit requests must be submitted in writing. The effective date will be the
date the Parks, Recreation and Culture department receives written notification.
Verbal notification will not be accepted. Non-attendance does not constitute notice
of withdrawal. An administrative fee of $15 will be deducted regardless of refund
or credit issued. All refunds/credits will be prorated whether classes are attended
or not. Seven days notice is required. Any classes missed may not be made up at
another class time or session. Please allow four weeks for the processing of refunds.
Refunds will only be issued to the original registrant.

administration fee may be applied to transfers and seven days notice is required.
Discount will be lost if transferring is done after the discount date. Notice can be
forwarded to pool@town.uxbridge.on.ca
For Ux-Camp policy, see camp flyer.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION/REVISIONS
Sometimes excellent programs with super instructors are cancelled when too many
people wait until the last minute to register. Our programs are based upon a cost
recovery basis and we need a minimum number of participants registered before a
camp/class can go on. A full credit will be provided if the Recreation Department is
responsible for program cancellations or changes. The Town of Uxbridge reserves the
right to cancel or revise any program in accordance with participant requirements.

RETURNED CHEQUES
We know that mistakes sometimes happen, but it is necessary to administer a $35.00
charge for returned NSF cheques. The Town of Uxbridge reserves the right to cancel the
registration or to revoke privileges until full payment is received.

AGE OF PARTICIPANTS
Most of our programs/swimming lessons are designed for a specific age group. All
participants must be the required age as outlined in the guide as of the completion date
of the program/lesson. Camp programs are based on age of participant in the current
calendar year.

SPECIAL NEEDS/PROGRAM INCLUSION

If you or your child requires special assistance for one of our programs please let us know
and we will try to accommodate your needs. For more information, please contact
Carolyn Clementson at (905)852-7831. One month notice is needed for a one-on-one
instructor. Please see Ux-Camp flyer for camp inclusion.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR
The Town of Uxbridge endeavors to provide the highest level of safety and enjoyment
to all participants and staff members for the duration of its leisure programs/aquatic
lessons. These guidelines have been developed to ensure that all involved are aware of
acceptable behavior. Coarse language, bullying, vandalism, physical and aggressive
behaviour will be recorded, reported and may result in the removal from the leisure
program/aquatic lesson or facility.

FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH & SAFETY

If a participant has a communicable disease (e.g. Chicken Pox, etc.) or a current public
health concern we would ask that the participant not attend leisure programs,
swimming lessons, or public swimming. Participants are welcome to return to the leisure
program/aquatic lesson when they are healthy. Parents should be aware that the Child
& Family Service Act requires that any suspicion of child abuse be reported immediately
to the Childrens Aid Society.

MEMBERSHIP EXTENSIONS
Extensions will only be given for illness and extended absence effective September 1,
2013. The member must be ill for a minimum of 2 weeks. A doctors note may be
required at the discretion of the Aquatic Coordinator. An extended absence is a
minimum of 3 weeks regardless of type of membership. One extended absence
extension is permitted per membership.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOTAPING/PHOTO CELLPHONES
Due to the new privacy laws, the use of cameras and video recorders must be arranged
with the office supervisor prior to the event. ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF
AND NOT USED IN THE CHANGE ROOMS. Unless parent/guardians indicate otherwise,
The Parks & Recreation department will assume permission is given for any pictures
taken during any Department program to be used to promote Recreation programs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately and be prepared for diverse weather
conditions during the course of the selected program. Severe weather conditions are
taken into consideration when planning programs. Programs will be altered if the need
arises. Indoor facilities are usually available for all programs unless otherwise specified.
See camp flyer for rain day locations.

The Thomas Foster Memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill in the countryside
of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal, which is just outside of Agra, India, inspired its
structure. The roof surfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery
and all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work of the
late Yvonne Williams, and are hand-painted, fired and leaded glass. The colour and
designs are harmonious, and are distributed so that the interior is flooded with soft,
colourful light. The 22 karat gold mosaics also display a multitude of colours, and lend
an elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are made up of richly coloured
terrazzo and marble mosaics, filled with symbolic designs. Upon entering, one crosses
the "River of Oaths", on which float water lilies and lily pads. The design of the floor
beneath the great dome suggests motion (which, in turn, symbolizes life), and this
motion radiates from the Greek letters for Alpha and Omega. These, in turn, flank the
Chi Rho monogram, which is displayed in an early Byzantine form. The laurel wreath of
victory over death encircles the centre motif. The bottom of the dome is pierced with
12 stained glass, leaded windows - one in the east contains a gold cross on a rich blue
background. Circling the lower part of the dome is the inscription "Take this my body
for it is done and I have gained a new life, glorious and eternal"

Township of Uxbridge Community Guide Spring & Summer 2015

Heritage Uxbridge
Historic Leaskdale Church
Heritage Uxbridge is a committee of dedicated
volunteers commissioned by the Uxbridge
Council to act as an advocate for the preservation
and conservation of heritage properties in the
township and to advise on matters related to
heritage and cultural aspects. In past years, the
committee has developed and organized guided
tours, and published articles and maps that help
promote Uxbridges cultural heritage. The
committee also seeks to identify local structures
for potential Ontario Heritage Act designation.
A few years ago, an award called the Heritage Appreciation Award was established by
the committee to recognize individuals for taking the initiative and action to preserve
our past. This year we will continue to recognize local area heritage farms, as well
homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. Working with
Council, we successfully identified the distinctive heritage district formerly known as
Gouldville by way of specially designed street signs. We have also been instrumental
in providing advice on the potential move of an OHA designated home to enable
development of land recently purchased on Mill Street.
The Heritage Sign Bylaw Guidelines are used as a reference and to help promote a
heritage look in the downtown district; information and ideas on improving building
facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance can
be found at the Townships office. We also continue to work with local businesses in
adding historic murals to their buildings, including Vinces Market, Shoppers Drug Mart,

Marks Work Warehouse, A&W and PharmaPlus. We have asked Council to be included
in the redesign and renovation of the township office sign.
Our committee has been working closely with the Trails Committee to procure funding
from Metrolinx to renovate the train trestle in an effort to restore foot traffic in

TREASURY DEPARTMENT
Property Tax Information
The property taxes you pay each year to the Township of Uxbridge support the many
services provided by the Township and also contribute to the delivery of Regional and
Educational Services. As a result, the Township collects taxes not only for its services,
but also on behalf of the Region of Durham and the local school boards.
Tax Billings and Installment Due Dates
The Township issues two tax bills per year. The Interim bill is mailed in January each
year with installments due in February and April. The Interim bill is based on
approximately 50% of the previous years tax bill and is shown as a reduction on the
final tax bill. The final tax bill is mailed in May with the installments due in June and
September. In order to satisfy the taxes for your property for the entire year the full
amounts of both the Interim bill and the Final bill must be paid. The Township of
Uxbridge offers two PAP plans: Pre-Authorized Monthly Payment Plan - 11 payments
are withdrawn on the first business day of the months January through to November
(no withdrawal in December); OR Pre-Authorized Installment Payment Plan - 4
payments are withdrawn on the prescribed due dates noted on each tax bill. PAP
application forms are available at the Municipal Office and our website
www.town.uxbridge.on.ca - under Departments, Treasury.

ROAD WATCH
What is Road Watch?
A new community initiative designed to improve road safety by creating greater
awareness and giving residents an opportunity to participate in identifying and reporting
dangerous and aggressive driving in the Township of Uxbridge.
Why have Road Watch?
To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries and fatalities in the
Township of Uxbridge.
What is Aggressive Driving?
Aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failure to stop and any
other unsafe driving that puts others at high risk for collision or injury.
How does Road Watch work?
Citizen Report Forms may be used any time you observe an act of aggressive driving.
Record as much information as you can about the particular aggressive driving incident
that you witnessed. This information will help the police in monitoring high risk areas
in our community. To complete the report, include the license number, the make and
colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) and the nature of the incident.
When you send in the report, it is important that you sign it. This helps safeguard the
system against abuse. Be assured that your personal information is for statistical use
only and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported will receive a letter from
the police, describing the unsafe or aggressive driving incident that was witnessed. If a
driver is reported more than once, the police will make personal contact with that
individual regarding the reported problems in person or by telephone.
Subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the police depending on the
severity of the incident. Remember, this is your opportunity to make our roads safer the same roads you use everyday.
Citizen Report Forms may be picked up at any of the following drop box sites:
Canadian Tire
Fast Eddies Diner
Anninas Bake shop & Cafe
Joy Village Market
Shell - Coppins Corners

MESSAGE FROM THE UXBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT

Spring Burning

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives

As the spring weather arrives, residents are encouraged to be very cautious when
burning yard debris. The dried grass and the spring breezes can result in a controlled
fire becoming a large out of control fire in mere seconds. You may cause severe
damage to life and/or property and may be responsible for all fees to extinguish the
fire.

Modern building supplies and home furnishings have dramatically increased the
speed of fire spread in house fires, giving you less time to safely exit your home. It is
mandatory to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. Check your
alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning properly.

The Township requires all persons who wish to have an open fire obtain a PERMIT,
comply with the Burning By-law No. 2007-209, and follow the requirements listed on
the back of the permit. Permits can be acquired at the Fire Department and Township
Office Monday to Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm. The By-Law can be found on the Township
website. http://www.town.uxbridge.on.ca/fire

If you have any questions please call the Uxbridge Fire

In last years Community Guide, we notified you that Legislation was passed making it
mandatory to have Carbon Monoxide alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances.
It is now law that you must have a working Carbon Monoxide detector in a residence
with a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage. Carbon Monoxide
Detectors must be installed outside the sleeping areas. For more information go to
the Office of the Fire Marshall website.
