As a nursing student at PCC, Feny Widjaja has big dreams. One of them is to secure
funding for buses to travel through rural areas in Indonesia to provide health care for
children. “Doctors are very rare,” she said. “Health care in my country is considered a
privilege.”
When Feny decided to go back to school for nursing, she chose PCC for the reasonable
tuition and the range of opportunities available for her new career. “The advisor here
is really helpful in explaining it all, describing all the options that are available to me,”
she said. These include getting an associate’s degree in nursing at PCC or transferring
to a four-year school to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Feny thinks international students should consider PCC because “they have everything
available here. All the advisors can give them all the information they need to
consider all the options.” As for all those options, what will Feny do when she
graduates from PCC? “I think I’m going to go for the bachelor’s, ” she said, smiling.
True to character, she added, “But I’m not closing any doors.”

Learning the basics
In the U.S. system of higher education, you have the option of beginning your four-
year degree by earning a two-year associate’s degree at a community college like PCC.
2 years at PCC + 2 years at university = 4-year bachelor’s degree
At PCC, we believe you should take the path that’s right for you. We offer over 60
career and technical programs that lead to a two-year degree. You can also continue
on to earn a four-year degree at a university.

Career and Technical Degrees and Certificates
One college, three campuses
PCC is one college with three campuses and additional learning centers throughout
the city. As a PCC student you can take classes at any PCC location.
Each campus offers dozens of university transfer programs and an active campus life.
Along with earning your degree, you can play intramural sports, perform in theater
productions or improve your leadership skills as a member of the student government.
Located just 10 minutes from downtown, the Sylvania
Campus rests on the gently sloping hills of suburban
Southwest Portland. This campus is home for PCC’s
nationally respected nursing and dental programs, as well
as dozens of university transfer, and career and technical
programs.
The central location of the Cascade Campus in North
Portland offers a more urban experience in one of Portland’s
most culturally diverse areas. Cascade is home to programs
such as Medical Laboratory Technology, Professional Music,
Fire Science, and a variety of university transfer programs.
The Rock Creek Campus sits amid farms and wetlands twelve
miles west of downtown Portland. The 256-acre campus
hosts PCC’s Veterinary Technology and Landscape Technology
programs, as well as the Environmental Studies Center and
other university transfer programs.

Before Seong Su Kim came to the U.S., he spent six years working at the U.S. Embassy
Seoul, the last two years as a clerk in the non-immigrant visa branch.
“It’s all about customer service,” he said, referring to the average of 2,000 people who
pass through their doors daily. Perhaps it is because of this experience that Seong
appreciates PCC’s array of support services. He named the Student Success Center, the
Writing Center, and the English Conversation Program as just a few of the services he’s
taken advantage of while at PCC.
“I met really great instructors and they were really helpful, really approachable,” he
said. “Whenever I had a question, they eagerly answered me – by e-mail, phone – so I
could get the answer.” As part of the English Conversation program, he meets weekly
with other local and international students to practice conversing in English.

After PCC, Seong hopes to continue on to earn a bachelor’s degree. “After
six years at the U.S. embassy, I thought I could do more, do bet-
ter,” he said about his decision to study abroad. No doubt, his
friendly manner and practiced people skills will be invaluable
on the path to his new career.

Seeking adventure and “something new,” Uyen Tran began thinking about study abroad
opportunities a couple of years ago.
She visited PCC online and found herself drawn to radiography, which combined her
interests in medicine and technology. Once she came to PCC, she embraced the “less
uniform” learning environment she found in the U.S. “I love the education here,” she
said. “The student and teacher relationship is really interesting to me. It’s really
comfortable .”
Also on the list of Uyen’s favorite things? “I love Portland!” she said. In the city, she
likes shopping, but on the weekends, she and her friends often take trips to Mt. Hood
or the coast. Uyen also cites the friendly people and the multicultural aspect of
Portland, where she said you meet people from all over the world, not just Americans.
“I know study abroad is not an easy thing to do,” Uyen said, “but if you have a chance
you should go. You will learn a lot. Not only about language, but also about other
cultures and lifestyles.”

Where is Portland, Oregon?
Situated between California and Washington state, Oregon is one of the most geographically
diverse states in America. As Oregon’s largest city, Portland boasts a vibrant local music
and live theater scene, hundreds of parks, an excellent public transportation system, and
hundreds of miles of bike paths.
Portland has:
> Big city sophistication and small town friendliness.
> Well-known companies like NIKE, Intel and advertising companies.
> Peaceful Chinese gardens, lively downtown clubs, police who ride bikes, and
tax-free shopping.
> Rainy weather and sunny days: you will have some perfect library weather to get your
studying done, but you will also have gorgeous, sunny days in the summer.
And there’s more…
Beyond the Portland city limits, the Northwest has an incredible range of landscapes and
activities to offer.
Travel east to the world-famous Columbia River Gorge. You’ll fnd hundreds of miles of hiking
and mountain-biking trails. On the water, the windsurfng and kiteboarding are legendary.
Or drive west, out through the rolling hills of Oregon’s famous wine country. Soon
you reach the Pacifc Ocean and clean, uncrowded beaches that stretch for miles.
Go southeast and you’ll climb into the Cascade Mountains. In winter, 11,235-
foot Mt. Hood and its national forest are prime ski and snowboard country.
In summer, the mountains offer hiking, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking,
fshing and much more.

When Yuko Mitomo frst came to the U.S., she spoke little English and didn’t know a
single person in the country. She started school at a private four-year college, but
soon switched to PCC to save money and get the extra support she needed to excel.
“PCC is better than other schools because students can take regular classes while
taking [English Speakers of Other Languages] classes,” she said. “[ESOL] teachers are
experts in teaching English and supportive, so your English will rapidly improve.” At
PCC, a TOEFL score is not required before you can start taking classes for credit.
To Yuko’s surprise, she ended up choosing Women’s Studies as her major. “In Japan, we
don’t have women’s studies. Women have more confdence and courage here.” In fact,
moving to a new country and learning a new language have made Yuko
more confdent. She said, “I didn’t know anybody in the U.S., so I
had to do stuff by myself. When I was in Japan, my parents,
my friends could help me. I became more independent.”
