Tricia Fentons cheerful

disposition, attentiveness,
and willingness to go above
and beyond in the classroom
has paid off for her
students. On mid-year tests,
96 percent of her fourthgrade students have
achieved academic
benchmarks in reading and in
math. Mrs. Fenton continually
tracks her students progress
and celebrates their
successes. She also is willing
to use her talents to enrich
students outside of the regular school day. She started an
after-school film club, co-advises the before school childrens
choir, and regularly updates the school website. Mrs. Fenton is
loved by her students and by her colleagues. Draper
Elementary is happy to have Mrs. Patricia Fenton in the
school, and proudly presents her as the 2015 Teacher of the
Year for Draper Elementary.

Draper Becomes a Beverley Taylor

Sorenson Arts School

Next year, our school will implement the

Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning
Program. It is a teaching partnership
between highly qualified arts specialists
and classroom teachers in 130 Utah
elementary schools.
The arts specialist
works collaboratively with the regular
classroom teacher to deliver quality, sequential, and
developmental arts instruction in alignment with the state Fine
Arts Core Curriculum.
This program is bringing music, visual arts, dance, and
theatre back into the classroom. And, as the art form
integrates with language arts, math, social studies, and
science, it is helping to reinforce the classroom core.
Arts integration provides students with a deeper level of
understanding in grade-level core content, and enriches the
learning experience for both students and teachers.

From the Principal

It is with much sentiment that I welcome
the month of May. We have many
celebrations, commemorations, and fun
learning activities planned for this month.
It is also a reminder that the school year is
coming to a close. Despite my best efforts,
I get misty-eyed when its time to say
goodbye to our sweet students for the
summer.

SAGE TESTING
Beginning next week, our third-, fourth-,
and fifth-grade students will be taking
Utahs Student Assessment of Growth and
Excellence (SAGE) test. Testing and makeup days run from May 4-23. Please make
sure you child is on time to school, has
plenty of sleep, and eats a healthy
breakfast. All of our students and teachers
have learned and worked diligently this
school year. We want our students to be
able to show what they know.
THANK YOU
This school year has been amazing
THANK YOU for another wonderful year of
building relationships, citizenship, and
academic success. Please see the contents
of this newsletter for some exciting new
programs we are implementing at Draper.
SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS
This year we became a Watch DOG school
and had the honor of becoming a Confucius
Classroom school. For next year, we look
forward to becoming a Beverley Taylor
Sorenson Arts School, incorporating
Playworks in our PE and recess, and
implementing the healthier approach
of Recess-first lunches. Its a fantastic
time to be at Draper Elementary!

of the summer. Our office will be relocated
in the computer lab. Please enter from the
west gym door.
Office Hours: June 8-12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
July 28-Aug. 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Playworks Coming Next Year

We believe that every child

should have a place on the
playground, and Playworks gives
schools the tools to create it.
Playworks training helps schools
and youth organizations around
the country create their program
through hands-on professional
development workshops and collaborative consultation. Built
on best practices in youth development, we will learn essential
skills that transform playgrounds, and change lives. Evaluation
of Playworks training programs show a reduction of
disciplinary incidents, a decrease of injuries on the
playgrounds and a positive change in students behavior in the
classroom. For more information visit the Playworks website:

Newsletter Discontinued Next Year

In the past few years we have worked hard to improve our

communications with parents. Because we utilize schoolwide
and teacher texting, our school Facebook page, Twitter feed,
and blog, we will not longer publish a monthly school
newsletter starting with the 2015-16 school year. We invite
you to check our social media often and watch for text
messages coming from the school and your teachers.
