Our Purpose...
To reach people with the love of Jesus Christ, provide a safe and
supportive environment, proclaim the standards of Gods truth,
duplicate the Christian life in others, and celebrate the majesty
and works of Our Great God.

New to Salem Heights?

Welcome! We are glad youre here! We invite
you to seek out the folks wearing the Ask Me
badge. Through them you will find information
about the ministries of Salem Heights Church
and how to become involved. Please fill out a
Visitor Card and drop it in one of the offering
boxes as you leave or scan this code to go directly to our website
and fill out a visitor card. We have an excellent nursery and
programs for children newborn through high school. Any of the
ushers will be happy to direct you to the proper classroom. If
you feel more comfortable having your infant with you during
the service, the last row in the Auditorium will be reserved for
parents with small children. There is a private room for nursing
mothers across the hall from the Auditorium with a rocking chair,
changing table and portable crib. For your convenience, it also
includes a monitor to enable you to still hear and view the
service.

Giving Update
THE MINISTRY OF SALEM HEIGHTS CHURCH
The ministry of Salem Heights Church is funded entirely by the
generous giving of Gods people. You will notice that we do not
pass the offering plate; however, there are offering boxes in the
back of the auditorium. We have done this so no one gives out
of compulsion. We believe from the Word of God that the Spirit
of God will lead people towards giving back to God of their first
fruits. ...God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7) and we know
He blesses those who take His Word seriously in every regard.
Thank you for prayerfully supporting Salem Heights financially as
we desire to reach the lost and disciple the Saints.

LUKE
Part 25
Luke 5:33-39
Good Food, Bridegrooms &
Spiritual Growth
Presented by
Pastor Justin Greene
May 3, 2015
In that profoundly moving book, Tolstoys War
and Peace, one of the most memorable
scenes describes the night at Russian
Headquarters when a messenger brought to
Koutouzow, the old Commander-in-Chief, the
first news of Napoleons retreat from Moscow.
After the years of terrific strain and agony to
which the soul of Russia had been subjected,
the tidings sounded incredible. The envoy
finished his report and then waited for orders in
silence. A Staff Officer was about to speak, but
Koutouzow checked him with his hand, and
tried to say something himself. Not a word
would come. Finally the old man turned away
to where the sacred images stood against the
wall. And then suddenly and unrestrainedly,
Great, God, he cried, my Lord and Creator!
Thou hast heard my prayer! Russia is saved!
And then he burst into tears.

To-day the envoy of the Gospel is charged with

tidings more moving and more wonderful by
far. If this message is fantasy, there is no hope
for humanity anywhere. If this is true, the whole
world is saved.1
Our consideration today ... what will this truth do if it gets
inside you?

KEY WORDS

Fasting Not mentioned in the Pentateuch

 Implied in Leviticus 16:31

 First mentioned in Judges 20

 Gained prominence in exile

 Purpose of fasting was clarity

Bridegroom This word is thick with Old Testament imagery.

 Picture of God coming in His Kingdom (Jer. 3:14-20;
31:31-33; Is. 54:1-5; 62:1-11)

Taken Away (v. 35) Literally lifted off (passive)

There will again be a day when fasting is appropriate ...
though not prescribed.

Key: The presence of the Bridegroom marks a new phase.

 Same family

 Same history

 Same personalities

 Radically different relationship ...

THE PARABLE

Parable = To lay alongside (for illustration)

Jesus gave them a picture to highlight four realities:

1. This new phase will pull away from the old.

2. This new phase will look different from the old.

3. This new phase will fill in a way that stretches.

The Spirit of God and the word of God will fill up and
expand the child of God.

If you are not flexible you will break!

4. In this new phase ... some will not participate, because they
like things the way they were.

What can I expect at this conference?

It wont take long for you to be disappointed in marriage. But as Paul
David Tripp explains, we buy into the delusion that our biggest problem
is outside of us. We blame our spouse. We blame our circumstances.
We rarely take seriously the nature of our own sin What Did You
Expect? challenges you to look into the mirror of Gods Word and see
yourself with clarity.
