How long have you had
your pet? Since August 2013.
What makes your pet special? We named him after our
favorite vacation spot, Daytona Beach, Fla. He learns very
quickly and adapts well to
other people or pets. He also
is great to cuddle with and fits
perfectly in our arms. We also
have taught him how to bark
hello when he wants food
from us.
Funny story about my
pet: When he has to go to the
bathroom outside, he plays
our piano. Depending on how
bad he has to go, hell push
the higher notes to get our
attention.

Oregon employees find comfort, joy in bringing their dogs to work

By Samantha Christian
Unified Newspaper Group

At four Oregon businesses,

every day is Take Your Dog To
Work Day.
They may sell or make different
products, but four-legged office
friends are what Butchs Repair,
Four Seasons Heating and Cooling, Metalcraft Industries and
Tri-County Appliance all have in
common.
In just one mile, someone could
take the Tour-de-Dog and meet
these friendly pooches and their
proud owners.
Starting on the north end of
town off of Market Street, Ryfle
and Bindi occupy the garage at
Butchs Repair. They might think
someone dropping off their vehicle is the parts guy, so dont
be alarmed if they approach you
looking for a treat.
Its easy to tell the two dogs
apart. Ryfle is a 10 1/2-year-old
purebred black lab, who employee Jeremy Ace has been bringing
to the shop every day for the last
eight years. Then there is Bindi,
a 6-year-old 100 percent purebred mutt, joked business owner
Butch Wille.
Bindi, a rescue dog, is not the
first of Willes dogs to spend time
with him at work, but she has been
coming along with him for the last
couple of years.
When employees arent changing tires or leaning over the hood
of a car, their smudged hands
reach down to pet the dogs or go
futz with them, as Wille said.
Having two dogs in the workplace can offer a welcome distraction, but there are still times they
can get in the way.
It somewhat reduces our stress,
but it sometimes adds stress,

What makes your pet

special? Jinxie was a feral
cat living on the back porch
of a friend in the Air Force.
When he was deployed,
he asked if I could care
for her ... and the kitten
she had recently delivered.
He dropped them off in a
cardboard box with an old
towel ... and fleas. They
were very sick, and my
vet wasnt able to save her

lost a child, and I think we
helped each other heal.
My friend returned home,
and asked me to find her a
permanent home. So I did.
Funny story about my
pet: Her favorite napping
spot is a chair. When I greet
her, she rolls onto her back
and stretches. Sometimes
this causes her to roll right

make a beeline for the dryer
when she hears the buzzer.
She loves to burrow into
clean warm towels.

Queenie Arndts desk, also

known as the cave.
Larry and Sheri Arndt
bring their dog Rooster to
work every day that he is
not training or competing in
simulated duck hunt tests.
He is already at the master
level.
For a hunting dog, Rooster is surprisingly quiet in
the office. This is likely
because he was trained how
to live another life as an
office dog by his late father,
Jake, who had come in with
him for four years.
But Rooster is the third
lab to call Four Seasons
his second home. There
has been a dog in the office
since 1986, when Queenie
convinced her daughter-inlaw to bring Barney (not
related to Jake or Rooster)
to work.
Queenie told her, Its
too cold for that puppy to
stay home, Sheri recounted.
Take the next left at
North Burr Oak Avenue
and enter the office building at Metalcraft Industries. You might walk right
past Star, a 12-year-old
Havanese, sitting on one of
the waiting room chairs.
Jim and Joan Swinehart
picked up the curly-haired
dog at 6-weeks-old from
North Carolina. She almost
didnt survive the trip home.
A golden retriever
thought she was a rabbit,
Joan explained. Shes a

tough little dog. Star has

also had surgery on her
knees, prompting Joan
to add that shes also an
expensive dog.
Joan wanted to get that
breed because Havanese are
companion animals that are
also good stress relievers.
Star is at the office every
day, all day. But when Jim
and Joan are gone on vacation and she is left there
with other employees, they
joke that she will whine the
whole day.
Although there are other
local businesses with animals, the last stop on this
tour is along North Main
Street at Tri-County Appliance.
Weimaraner brothers
Gus, 5, and Digger, 4, can
be spotted with their paws
over the half door by the
office, waiting to see who
comes into the store for a
new stove or refrigerator.
They are also on the lookout for FedEx drivers, who
bring them treats every day.
Denny and Connie
Stiklestad started bringing
the German hunting dogs
to the family-owned business since the pups were
6-weeks-old. Their 7-yearold mother, Auggie, also
used to come to the office.
Even though the breed
can be high strung, Connie
explained that they are also
considered Velcro dogs.
They need to be on you
or next to you, she said,
which doesnt seem to
bother the other employees.

Try taking your pet along camping this summer

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, camping during the springtime can be a perfect weekend getaway. However, if you dont want
to leave your four-legged friends
behind while setting out on your
adventure, try bringing them along.
Many campgrounds allow pets,
with certain rules and regulations,
said Dr. Mark Stickney, clinical
associate professor at the Texas
A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Often, the rules regarding pets
can be seen posted on their website,
and if not, questions can be easily
answered over the phone. However,

it is not advised that you show up

with your pet without prior research
and consent.
Most rules will include things
such as having your pet on a leash,
making sure they are supervised at
all times, and requiring proof of vaccinations, Stickney said. Even if
they dont require health records or
vaccination certificates, its a good
idea to bring them along just in
case.
Just as you need to pack food and
other essentials for yourself, dont
forget to pack necessities for your
pets as well. Some items youll need
to bring are plenty of food, a pet

first-aid kit, a harness, and a leash.

Even if the campsite has natural
water resources, such as streams or
lakes, you must still bring plenty of
water for your pet to drink throughout your stay. There are many different diseases they can catch by
drinking from a pond or lake.
Coming into contact with wild
animals is a definite risk when you
are out in a national forest or grassland. Although most of the wildlife
you run into wants to keep away
from you as well, you should have
a way of containing your pet just in
case.
If your pet does get into a tussle

with a wild animal, you do not want

to get into the middle of it, Stickney
said. There is a very good chance
you will be bitten or harmed. Your
best method of action is calling off
your pet or to try scaring away the
wild animal.
In order to prevent such situations
in the first place, it is a good idea to
keep your pets close to you throughout your camping expedition and to
have a leash or harness available at
all times.
Before setting off on your camping adventure, make sure your pets
are up-to-date on all of their vaccinations, especially rabies. Depending

on the campsites location, you may

consult with your veterinarian about
any other vaccinations that your pet
may need, as well as discuss appropriate flea and tick control.
To make camping with your pet
an exciting experience for the both
of you, be sure to research the campsite ahead of time, take note of any
restrictions or regulations, and bring
the essentials along with you.
