THE HISTORY
The FN factory in Liege, Belgium has
OF FN
produced sporting and military small
arms for more than a century.
Background
In 1889 the gunsmiths in Belgium’s Liege Region
formed an association to fill an order from the
Belgian military for 150,000 Mauser rifles built
under license. Thus Fabrique Nationale formed
and is the origin of today’s FN, a designation that is
still a worldwide hallmark of quality.
In 1897, the FN tradition expanded with the
partnership of John Moses Browning, one of the
most innovative firearms designers in history.
Together, FN and Browning produced several of
the most prestigious firearms in the world,
including the 9mm Hi Power pistol, numerous
Browning machine guns, the Auto-5 autoloading
shotgun, the .22 semi-automatic rifle and the
B25 Superposed shotgun – arms that were Made
in Belgium and are still legendary.

GETTING TO KNOW FNH USA
THE HISTORY OF FN
FN products received the ultimate
acknowledgement in 1957 and 1982, respectively,
when NATO adopted our 7.62mm and 5.56mm
caliber ammunition designs as their military
standard. The success of the M249, M240, .50
caliber machine guns, and the fielding of the FAL
(Light Assault Rifle) by more than 90 countries all
demonstrate FN’s commitment to excellence.
FN’s full name is Fabrique Nationale Herstal
(FNH). Herstal was added to FN when it became
a subsidiary of the Belgian-based company, the
Herstal Group. FNH and the Herstal Group are
based out of Liege, Belgium, just an hour drive
from the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The
Herstal Group is known around the globe for the
quality and performance of its products. Under
the brand names FN Herstal, Browning and
Winchester, the Herstal Group designs,
manufactures and distributes a full range of
firearms and accessories for defense, law
enforcement, hunting and competition.
LEADER IN SMALL ARMS
In the United States FN is represented by two
entities; FNH USA, which is responsible for sales,
marketing and business development, and FNM,
which handles manufacturing. Together they have
a workforce of approximately 700 employees.
FNH USA was started in 1998 in McLean, Virginia.
FNH USA is split into two separate divisions:
military operations and law enforcement/
commercial operations. The role of FNH USA is to
coordinate business development with all
government agencies and to grow FN market share
in the law enforcement and commercial sector.
FN Manufacturing, located in Columbia, South
Carolina, is the U.S. manufacturing arm of FN.
Design, research and development, and
manufacturing activities are conducted under
the authority of the mother company, FN Herstal
SA. Some of the firearms that FNM produces for the
U.S. Government are M16 rifles, M249 Light
Machine Guns and M240 Medium Machine
Guns. FNM also produces the FNP and FNX line
of handguns, as well as the SPR and TSR XP
bolt-action rifle line for FNH USA.
FNM is one of only three small arms manufacturers
designated by the U.S. Government as the
industry base for small arms production. Our
reputation for quality and reliability has
been clearly demonstrated by the adoption of
numerous FN weapon systems by the U.S.
military and law enforcement organizations.
Future FIREARMS
Among FN’s latest designs, and potentially one of
its most influential family of firearms, are
represented by the 5.56 mm MK 16 carbine,
7.62 mm MK 17 assault rifle and 40 mm MK 13
Grenade Launcher, all developed under the
Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle
(SCAR) program. In January 2004 the U.S. Special
Operations Command (USSOCOM) began
soliciting for a new assault rifle, the SCAR.
In November of the same year, the FN model of
the SCAR™ was chosen over 11 other bids.

For example, FNH USA is the major sponsor of
the annual Midwest 3-Gun Championships, held

is one of the largest 3-gun action shooting
matches in the country, drawing hundreds of
competitors from across the nation.
At the 2009 Midwest 3-Gun Championships, Sgt.
Daniel Horner of the U.S. Army Marksmanship
Unit won the Tactical Optics Division. Another
member of the USAMU team, SFC Robby
Johnson, won the Tactical Iron Division. The
Tactical Optics-Heavy Division win went
to Tate Moots, with the Heavy Metal Division
win going to Michael Fordyce, and the Open
Division win going to Don Bednorz. The win in
the Stage 5 FNH USA match, in which all
competitors use a SCAR™ 16S carbine, SLP Mark
I shotgun and an FNP-45 pistol also went to
