Background

ways. To this network will be integrated the
rail link between CKS International Airport
and Taipei, and the Taipei Circle Line.

Capital of Taiwan with more than 5 million
inhabitants for the metropolitan area, Taipei
City started planning its metro network in the
1970’s, the construction in 1980’s and progressively the revenue services in 1990’s.
Nowadays, the 1st stage network is totally
completed and put into revenue service. This
first metro network of 69 km includes 6 lines
and 64 stations, with a daily passenger flow
of about 1 million.
A 2nd stage network has been approved by
the Central Government and is now under
construction. Including 7 lines and 57 stations, the second stage will add up 70 km rail-

The Neihu Line
In 1996, the first line of the Taipei metro
network to be put into commercial operation
is the Mucha Line (Brown Line), an elevated
Medium Capacity Transit system (VAL). As part
of the 2nd stage network, the Neihu Line is an
extension of the Mucha Line.
The Neihu Line starts north from the existing
elevated terminal station BR2. The line then
goes down into tunnel to the Sungshan
domestic airport with BR1 station, it turns
north under the airport and Keelung River
and re-emerges after B1 station. The Neihu
Line continues east by viaducts crossing Neihu
District to reach the terminal and depot
in Nankang. There a connection is made to
Nankang Line.
The system definition, as well as the design of
the civil works, track and depot have been
carried out between 1999 and 2002. The construction has started in 2003. The revenue
service is scheduled to begin in June 2008.

Stations

Mucha Line

The Neihu Line includes 12 stations, of which
2 are underground and 10 elevated. Added to
this is a maintenance depot.

Infrastructure

Dec. 2005

The total length of Neihu Line is about 15 km,
including 4 km under tunnel and 11 km on
viaduct.
