Design And Construction Of Machine Foundations

4.0

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:
The structure is supported on RCC pedestals and foundation. The top of pedestal is 300mm
above the paving level. The foundation is analysed for the applicable load combinations,
considering that, the super structure load is applied on the top of pedestal and is transferred
to bottom of foundation by cantilever action. The above mentioned drawing provides the
load data for various supporting column foundations under different load conditions. All
possible load combinations are derived from the furnished load cases and the design of
foundations are made for all the combinations. The foundation size and the reinforcement is
arrived considering all the combinations. Design of foundation is made based on the limit
state design method of reinforced concrete structures.

The foundation system, i.e., isolated, strip or raft shall be decided based on loading
Arrangement, load intensity, spacing between the foundations and soil strata. Design of
Foundation at various levels shall be dependant upon the soil bearing capacity at that level.
It is taken as sub grade modulus of 16000 kN/m2/m at 2.5m below finished graded level.
All foundations and pedestals analysis done staad pro moments and stress taken at the edge
of the pedestal for these moments and stress design is carried out in accordance with IS:456
as per limit state method of design. Safe bearing capacity (SBC) of the soil is increased by
25% under seismic/wind loading condition.

Design is done for the critical load, i.e Air Compressor Foundation and same is adopted for
other foundations with lesser loads
BENDING MOMENT CLACULATION:
Maximum Load is on Air Compressor Foundation = Static Load +Dynamic Load
= 17.10KN + 19.67 KN = 36.77KN
For Machine Foundation, Load is taken as Three times the Total load = 3 x 36.77 = 110.31 KN
Bending Moment = WxL2 / 2 = 110.31 x 0.642 /2 = 22.59 KNm

As per IS : 2974 ( Part I ) - 1982

Minimum Reinforcement in the concrete block shall be not less than 25 kg/m3.
Total Quantity of concrete for machine foundation = 1.408 m3
Total Quantity of concrete for machine foundation = 1.408 x 25
= 35.2 KGS
Hence provide Y12@200C/C T&B (Top and Bottom Mat)
provide Y12@200C/C T&B (Intermediate Mat)
provide Y12@200C/C Each face Side face Reinforcement
Hence Quantity Reinforcement steel provided

= 104 KGS , Hence safe.

Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) at 2.5 m below ground level is considered for design is 250 kN/m2 , Hence
design is Safe.
