At the September meeting of the State Board for Historic Preservation, Kathy La Frank, National Register Coordinator for NY State presented the nomination for the
Fleischmanns Theater. Sponsored by the Village of
Fleischmanns, researched by Erik Johanson of Halcott
Center and Ms. La Frank, the nomination was reviewed,
accepted, and approved for State Register Listing. From
here, the recommendation goes to the National Park
Service for their review and subsequent listing on the
National Register of Historic Places.
“The structure is similar to some other buildings along
Main Street in Fleischmanns and contained within a potential Village wide designation,” says La Frank who
also worked on the Skene Library and Congregation
Bnai Israel Listings. La Frank has been working with
Delaware County for over 20 years and has lead the
charge for several other State and National Register listings such as the New Kingston Valley and the Hamlet
of Roxbury to name a few.

Fleischmanns Then and Now

Several generations of Fleischmanns residents, including many living here now bought their cars, got gas, and
had their cars serviced at the A.H. Todd garage complex. And while one waited for the car to be services, one
could wonder through Todd’s fabulous Coca Cola memorabilia collection. Most recently the Village landmark was the site of VW Parts. The fire there several weeks ago destroyed much of the historic complex. In
the early view, you can see the old school in the background. This, too, was lost to fire several years ago.

Groundhogs Feast on Pumpkin Blossoms…
As we have reported here throughout the summer, the Pumpkin
Patch was growing well and blossoms began to appear on the
vines as expected in early July. Along
with the blossoms we noticed what appeared to cut off stems. Within a couple of weeks it became clear that the
blossoms were developing fruit as expected but that a very hungry creature
was eating the nascent fruit. This story
is akin to those written for children’s
picture books. Unfortunately, we were recently told that a family of groundhogs had
taken up residence under the shed adjacent to the Patch where we planted 36 pumpkin seedlings and 60 mini
gourd seeds. Not a single pumpkin has been spared. We can only assume that the groundhogs have enjoyed
the “fruits of our labor.” We are disappointed to announce that there will not be a Pumpkin Fest this year. We
will try again next year!

Theatre Continued…..

A State and National Register Listing not only
provides the prestigious recognition that the
property is significant but also provides a
measure of protection from federal and state
sponsored projects that may otherwise compromise the integrity of the structure. It also
serves as a unique planning tool for communities. Knowing and understanding where historic resources are located can often help guide
future projects as well as serving as a promotional tool. Additionally the Listing is important in leveraging State and Federal funding. There are also opportunities for both State
and Federal Tax Credits while undergoing rehabilitation and/or restoration.
In the end, Fleischmanns is home to a host of
significant architectural treasures and this listing is yet another stepping stone for Fleischmanns to capitalize on their historic resources.
Bravo to the Village for sponsoring this successful nomination.

Letter from Mayor Pascarella…..
Greetings Fleischmanns Community,
It is hard to accept that summer has already flown by, but the chill in the air tells us it is so. It has been a
productive summer though, especially for those looking to play tennis in the Village Park again. The
tennis court reconstruction is finally complete and the courts are open for play! Lommerrijk, Inc. was
the contractor on the project and they did a fine job building the courts for us. The concession stand and
playground projects which had significantly more bureaucratic hurdles to clear are also about to go out
to bid with hopes that they will be at least nearly complete by winter.
There are a few updates for the Theater building as well. The work to replace the roof and give a facelift to the facade will be happening soon. The Village also recently was successful at having the Theater
placed onto the State and National registry of historic buildings. The listing can help lend a competitive
edge when applying for grant or loan funds down the road for renovations to the building. In fact, the
Village is exploring the idea with the help of the MARK Project to have the entire Village listed in the
future rather than doing it building by building. There have been several buildings that have been purchased recently in the Village including one I hear which will become a new doctor's office.
