Tabernacle Committee
addresses potential
conflict of interest
Residents express concern with possible
appointment of Mayor Kim Brown
as assistant to school district superintendent
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
A glaring concern of Tabernacle residents dealing with a perceived conflict of interest with
Mayor Kim Brown arose at last
weeks township committee meeting.
The recent push to potentially
appoint Brown as the assistant to
the superintendent of the Tabernacle School District has created
a cause for concern.
It seems intuitive that its a
conflict of interest for one person
to hold both positions, resident
Ginger Evans said.
Those who spoke during the
public comment session of the
meeting made it a point to state
their views have nothing to do
with Brown personally. Residents
specifically addressed that they
have full confidence in Brown
being able to perform both jobs at
a high level.
Nevertheless, those who spoke
said the opportunity would now
exist for influence to be exerted
over Brown by the superintend-

ent and visa versa when it comes

to conflicts that overlap between
the town and the schools.
Im not saying that this will
happen, but just the public perception that it could happen
should give the committee cause
to discuss the situation, Evans
said.
Committeeman Joseph Barton
spoke on the difficulties of this
impending scenario from the outlook of someone who has been in
Browns shoes as a former mayor.
If I were in that position, I
would have to recuse myself from
voting on anything having to do
with the schools, Barton said.
Tabernacle schools have been
experiencing a tough stretch in
which the administration has
been under fire due to a perceived
lack of transparency.
The relationship between the
administration and concerned
parents has begun to deteriorate
since last fall when the superintendent began issuing policy
changes at his discretion, resiplease see GAS, page 10

Recognition for character

Seneca High School Renaissance Club hosts Peoples Choice Awards
By SEAN LAJOIE

At this time of year, as the
school calendar winds down,
schools take time to recognize
their students with a variety of
assemblies honoring everyone
from honors students to student
athletes.

However, Seneca High School

students for their character,
charm, integrity and humanity.
The Seneca Renaissance

Geoffrey D. Lake wins Silver Valor Award

Recently, Cadet Geoffrey D.
Lake was awarded the Air Force
Junior Reserve Officer Training
Corps Silver Valor Award for
heroism in the performance of
valor, as a member of the NJ20101 JROTC Corps at Seneca
High School.

Lakes selfless actions and

clear thinking resulted in him
saving his fathers life in the fall
of 2014. While his father worked
underneath his automobile, he
shook the automobile trying to
loosen a bolt, the automobile then
rocked off the car-jack, pinning
his father underneath the vehicle.
As a result, Lake took immediate
lifesaving action by calmly resetting the jack as the weight of the
vehicle slowly crushed his father.
With no additional help, Cadet
Lake wedged himself against the
vehicle and with his sheer
strength alone, maneuvered the
jack back in place; thus allowing
Lake to raise the vehicle high
enough to pull his father to safety.
In addition, had Lake not been
present and taken such decisive
action, his father would have
surely been killed.
For his efforts, his Senior Aerospace Instructor, Major (Ret.)
Sean P. Hoggs, nominated Lake
for the prestigious national Silver
Valor Award, second only to the

In closing, the singularly distinctive accomplishment of Lake

officially presented with the national award in a ceremony that
was held on May 8, by Assistant
Principal Trish LaBouff.

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

here arent too many times

when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys
ban on self-service gas stations? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

You, my fine people, are truly

It is said that character is

When Bonnie Horner presented

her daughter with her peoples
choice selection, there was not a
dry eye in the auditorium.
Julie has persevered through
some tough times battling medical struggles and never complained about it taking some of
her beloved activities away.
In fact, she strives to one day
become a doctor to level the playing field for those who also find
themselves or their loved ones in
a similar situation.
I cannot think of a better person for this award. I love you so
much, Horner said.
The crowd burst out in laughter as Renee Collins presented
two separate peoples choice
awards.
Its so hard to pick just one
student when you are exposed to
so many, so unbeknownst to the
Renaissance Club, I picked two,
Collins said. So without further
adieu, allow me to introduce you
to Jack Hartman and his cell
phone.
Hartman and his cell phone
both marched up to the podium
with no shame, very proud to
have been nominated by his
teacher.
They are always together.
When theres one, theres the
other, Collins said. We get about
the same amount of face time in
class.
Nonetheless, she was thankful
for Hartman brightening her day
by being himself and for his ability to not only take a joke, but to
also fire one back her way.
This was the second to last ceremony of the year, followed by the
Senior Athlete Awards on June 2.
However, many teachers admitted
to this being their most beloved
end-of-year ceremony due to its
uniqueness.
Teachers assess you by a test
grade or class participation.
Tonight, you all get an A in
human relations, Spector said.

dent Jennifer Herpen said.

It will take an act of the school
board for Brown to be approved to
the position, so it is not something she is entitled to just yet.
Brown was a school employee
before she began on the township
committee.
She used to work in the back of
the elementary school in the copy
room, and now she works in the
front office at the middle school.
This has caused more residents to
realize she is involved with both
the schools and the township.
The mayor has a career just
like the rest of us. She works at
the school, and just like the rest of
us, we aspire to make the most income for our families that we
can, Barton said. This is a great
opportunity for Mayor Brown.

Brown has had a lot of accomplishments in her 16 years with

the committee and has earned the
respect of each member. They all
spoke on the matter at the end of
the public comment session, fully
supporting Brown.
I have a lot of respect for Kim.
This is a tremendous opportunity
for her, and I wish her luck regardless of which route she
takes, Committeeman Stephen
Lee said.
When it came to the possibility
of Brown acting on certain topics
for the greater good of exclusively the schools or exclusively the
township, all committee members
were in agreement that this is a
far-fetched scenario.
As far as breaching confidentiality, Mayor Brown has always
kept her cards close to her chest,
so I think that would be a bit of a
stretch, Committeeman Richard
Franzen said.
Brown concluded the meeting
by assuring those in attendance

she would never do anything that

would put the township and its
schools in jeopardy.
I love this town. I love every
aspect of it, Brown said.
In other news:
Committee passed a resolution to set specific salaries for employees at a 2 percent increase
compared to last years numbers.
Committee tabled an ordinance to appoint the Tabernacle
Fire Company/Rescue Squad as
the official volunteer firefighting
organization for the township,
due mainly to the absence of
Committeeman Joseph Yates.
Restoration work to implement South Jersey Gas lines into
numerous roads has begun.
The township will be advertising two job positions that have recently come open, the deputy
court administrator and the
plumbing sub code official.
Bleachers at the baseball and
softball fields have been secured
from the 2013 recreation grant.
