Edelbrock held on bad check charge

BY STEVEN

KALIDA Shortly before noon

on Friday, officials with the Ohio
Bureau of Criminal Identification
and Investigation, the Putnam
County Sheriff s Office and
the Delphos Police Department
arrested Jennifer Ann Edelbrock
at her Kalida home.
On May 19, in the course
of serving a search warrant on
Edelbrocks accounting firm on
Fifth Street in Delphos, BCI
agents seized documents, electronics and computer equipment.
The warrant was executed as part
of an investigation into alleged
financial crimes perpetrated by
staff members at the firm.
Delphos Chief of Police
Kyle Fittro reported that since

Tuesdays seizure, new complaints, both historic and suggestive of possible new criminal
activity perpetrated over the past
week, have been filed.
While continuing to review
evidence seized during the
raid, BCI secured a warrant for
Edelbrocks arrest on a single
count of passing bad checks in
an amount over $7,500, a felony
offense of the fourth degree.
Once they analyze all those
documents, well have a better
idea if there are going to be
more charges or if there are not,
stated Delphos Chief of Police
Kyle Fittro. The volume of documents is such that its going to
take (BCI) a while to get through
them.
Edelbrock is currently being
held without bond in the Allen
County Jail pending arraignment.

DELPHOS Andrew Daley will take
the vacated 1st Ward council seat left
by newly-appointed Delphos City Law
Director Andrew Knueve. Daley was
appointed by the Allen County Republican
Party on Wednesday. Daley ran for the seat
in the May 2013 Primary Election.
Ive had people come up to me since
Andy Knueve was appointed law direc-

tor, Daley said. They wanted me to get

in there and get involved so I applied for
the appointment.
Daley is a Spencerville native and
moved his family to Delphos and would
like to become active in decisions affecting their home.
City government is the closest to the
people, Daley said. This is where my
family works and my children will grow
up and go to school. I want to provide
my children with a hometown that is
growing.
Daley would like to start with the citys
budget.
We need to get the budget where it
needs to be, he began. We have a spending deficit coming up in 2016 and we need
to start working on that now.
Daley is encouraged by recent happenings.
The Lakeview Farms and K&M
expansions are great for us, Daley said.
Im going to have a bit of a learning
curve before I can settle down and bite
into everything.
Daley and his wife, Andrea (Wrasman),
reside on East Fourth Street. He is a
Spencerville High School and Rhodes
State College graduate and works at
Unverferths in Delphos.

VAN WERT County unemployment rates were down in

every county in the state in April. The jobless rate fell to 3.8

The 3.8 percent rate matches the unemployment rate from both

the century. The lowest-ever monthly unemployment rate for Van
Wert County is 2.5 percent, according to records provided by the
Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The highest rate
locally was 19.0 percent in November 1982.

rates in April. Allen County was also at 4.5 percent for April
after reporting a 5.1 percent rate the previous month. Putnam
Countys jobless rate fell to 3.7 percent last month from a 4.4
percent rate in March, Mercer County again had the lowest
unemployment rate of all 88 Ohio counties at 2.9 percent. Even

Country
Wedding, new buggy horse and birthday
BY LOVINA EICHER
The sun is shining bringing a little warmth with the chilly
weather. Our mercury on the thermometer dipped down all
the way to 35 degrees this morning. Brrr! Without heat in the
house it felt good to wear a sweater. Even Izzy (Elizabeths
Yorkie) is trying to find a spot to lie where the sun is shining
into the house. This is the second day of this cool weather. Im
hoping the rest of the week will be warmer as we would like
to put the rest of my garden out.
Today is Elizabeths last day of work at the factory until
June 1. They get Friday and next week off and tomorrow
she is taking the day off to go to her friend Lindas wedding.
Timothy and Elizabeth will be evening servers at the wedding.
Elizabeth has to wear mint green and Timothy a white shirt
with black pants and vest.
Next week is nephew Johns wedding and Elizabeth and
Verenas teal colored dresses have to be cut out and sewn yet.
Timothy also needs to wear a teal color shirt for this wedding.
Elizabeth will sew all three outfits so Im so glad she gets
some time off.
The wedding of nephew Levi and Barbara is now history.
We arrived home around 11:00 p.m. A little over four hours
later my husband Joe had to get up to go work at the factory.
Needless to say, he was ready for an early bedtime Friday
evening.
It was a nice, cool and sunny day for the wedding. Fried
chicken was on the menu so the cool weather made it easier on
the cooks that had to fry the chicken. My job was to help with
the mashed potatoes. They had over fifty cooks so it didnt
seem like I had too much to do that day. Daughter Verena was
a table waiter and had to wear light blue. The cooks all wore
royal blue.
All eight of us siblings were at the wedding. Brother Amos
had a three year old horse at the wedding that he trained

and was going to sell. Joe

and I decided to buy him as
we are in need of another
horse. His name is Mighty
and is a very gentle horse.
Nieces Elizabeth and Emmas
special friends, Menno and
Manuel, brought Mighty
along up with them to our
house on Friday evening. It
was greatly appreciated.
Joe and I took Mighty to
town on Saturday to get groceries. Hes so calm around
the traffic and the farm equipment. That means a lot to Lovinas daughter, also
have a horse who handles
traffic well, keeping us safe named Lovina, turned 11
and wanted to decorate her
and sound.
Daughter Lovina had her own birthday cake. (Submiteleventh birthday on Monday ted photo)
May 18. She wanted to make
her own cake. She used a
heart-shaped pan. I helped her decorate it. We had grilled hamburgers and macaroni and cheese along with the cake and ice
cream in honor of her birthday. Joseph, 12, and Lovina made
cheddar and sour cream popcorn for Lovina to take to school
to treat her classmates. Some of her classmates asked her to
bring the popcorn that she makes for a birthday treat.
On Friday evening, Mose (Susans friend) brought brats
and grilled them for our supper. Then on Saturday Timothy
(Elizabeths friend) deep-fried blue gill fish for our supper.
Elizabeth made French fries to go with the fish. I appreciated
getting out of the cooking several nights.

Crop field vigilance crucial, especially with corn

BY JAMES HOORMAN
OSU-Extension educator
Putnam County
Farmers have made great
progress this year getting their
corn and soybeans planted.
Farmers need to evaluate all
their fields, especially corn,
for potential problems and in
severe cases, replant the field
if time allows. The following
is one diagnostic list that can
be used to identify problems
in corn:
No seed present.
Generally caused by planter
malfunction or bird or rodent
feeding. Birds and rodents
often leave evidence of their
activity such as digging holes
and seed or plant parts left on
the soil surface.
Shoot (coleoptile)
unfurled or leafed-out before
reaching the soil surface. The
shoot from the seed is programmed to grow upward

until it comes in contact with

sunlight, then it unfurls. If
light hits it before reaching
the surface, such as cloddy soil or improperly closed
seed furrow, it will unfurl
early. Other potential causes
of premature leaf unfurling
include planting too deep,
compaction or soil crusting,
and cool, wet conditions
allowing extended exposure
to herbicides.
Poorly developed radicle (root) or shoot from the
seed. Could be a defected
seed since most hybrids are
sold at 95% germination
guarantee, the other 5%
could be defected or poor
quality. Disease would be
a more common problem.
Evidence of seed rots would
be a yellow to brown tip
on the shoot. A healthy root
should be creamy white, but
disease will make it discolored and dark.

Seed swelled but did

not sprout. Often occurs
during a time that a seed
starts to absorb water but a
rapid change in weather causes soil conditions to become
unsuitable for continued
development, such as hot and
dry or cold and wet. Planting
issues may also cause the
problem; for example, poor
seed-to-soil contact and
shallow planting may have
allowed the seed to dry out
before completing germination. Seed furrows may not
have properly closed with
no-till planting.
Row skips associated
with discolored and malformed seedlings. This may
be a symptom of herbicide
damage. Note depth of planting and herbicides applied
compared with injury symptoms such as twisted roots,
club roots, or purple plants.
Seeds hollowed out.

Evidence of insect damage

such as seed corn maggot or
wireworm. Try to confirm by
finding feeding larvae.
Uneven seedling emergence. May be due to soil
moisture and temperature
variability within the seed
zone. Variability often caused
by poor seed to soil contact in
cloddy soils, soil crusting, or

planting too shallow.

For any field problem,
note any patterns of poor
emergence. Often the problem corresponds with a particular row, spray width,
hybrid, field or residue, which
may provide some additional
clues to the cause. It is not
uncommon for emergence
problems to be the result of

two or more stress factors;

otherwise, the crop would
have emerged fine with only
one factor. It is also advisable
to note the population and the
variability of the seed spacing. This information will be
valuable in diagnosing any
future problems.

event. I figured that was my best chance to get back to State,

he explained of his earlier decision. I wanted to win it here
and make sure I got back. I was 11th last year in the event and
theres pressure to get back there and try to get into the finals.
TROY One might say Fridays Division III Track and Now I can just go for it relaxed next week.
Field Regional Meet at Troy High School was rather successFellow Lancer Bayley Tow took a double runner-up in both

next weekends State Meet.
I found that really helped me. I prefer the mile but that

the 3,200 because its a good pace but not a 1,600 or 800 pace.
I pulled out of the high jump just to focus just on this I can work my way into it and be steady and strong. I also
simply give thanks to God; I say a prayer before every race
and that just relaxes me and calms my nerves.
He also will be going in the 4x8 relay.
Ottovilles Alicia Honigford also took second in the girls
100-meter hurdles.
I ran a 15.8, just a tenth of a second off my official personal
best; I have an unofficial 15.3, she began. Its nice to have the
support me and my teammates get from the community; that
really pushes you. I had extra incentive because I jist mussed
going to State last year and it would have been disappointing
not to get there this year. My whole focus was to stay within the

Sharp and freshman Gabrielle Goecke took second in both
events.
We call ourselves the Fab 4; we do a lot together, Sharp said.
We even complain to our coaches together, Mulholland
chimed in. We do so much together, even with the guys.
This group is like a family; we enjoy running and practicing
together.
We have so support for each other and from each other.
We constantly spur each other on to do our best, Grigsby
explained.
These girls have been here before and I havent. They are
teaching me about it all, Goecke added.
Mulholland earlier clinched third in the 100-meter dash.
I always struggle to get out of the blocks. I play catchup
all the time, she noted. I false-started at the NWC meet and
that is a concern in the back of my mind but my times have
been going steadily down since. I have long legs and I think
that helps me come from behind.
St. Johns Tyler Conley advanced with a third in the boys
800-meter run.
I ran a 1:57.8, slightly off my PR of 1:57.6. I have been
getting steadily better, he observed. I started two weeks late
due to the basketball season, so I am still not peaking. That
might be helping me. I have been getting in better condition
as the weather gets warmer and that is leading to faster times.
I can just go into next week calm and relaxed because no one
is expecting me to do well.

Lancer ACME sweeps DH with Jennings

BY JOHN PARENT
DHI Media Sports Editor
sports@timesbulletin.com
MIDDLE POINT A
strong summer baseball
season can often establish
a foundation for success in
the following varsity season.
If the first two days of the
ACME season are any indication, Lincolnview could be
pretty good next year.
The Lancers improved to
3-0 on the young season with
a doubleheader sweep of Ft.
Jennings on Friday evening
at Lincolnview High School,
winning 11-1 (6 inn.) and
9-4. Game two was called
after five innings due to darkness.

Jennings
drew
first
blood in the opener as
Ryan Hoersten led off the
game with a single against
Lincolnview right hander
Derek Youtsey. Hoersten
advanced on a ground out,
then came around to score
when Brandon Wehri singled.
Jennings had an opportunity
to add on, but the rally fell
apart as Youtsey picked off
Wehri at first for the second
out. That loomed large when
Kyle Hellman singled and
Connor Stechshulte was hit
by a pitch. Youtsey escaped
the jam with a strikeout of
Alex Sealts to end the inning.
As it turned out, that was
the Musketeers last best
chance against the Lancer
senior-to-be. Youstey settled in, retiring six of the
next seven batters he faced.
In the fourth, he allowed a
lead-off single to Stechshulte
before the Lancer defense
stepped up, turning over a
6-4-3 double play. After he
struckout the next two hitters
(Aaron Sealts reached on a
wild pitch), Youstey worked
around a lead-off single in
the fifth.
In the sixth, the big right
hander began to tire, as he
issued three consecutive
walks, loading the bases with
two away. Youtsey responded
with a strikeout to end the
inning.
While Jennings failed to
take advantage of the free
passes, the Lancer offense
didnt waste early chances against Wehri and the
Musketeers. As a first inning
rain began to fall, the Lancers
jumped ahead. Austin Leeth
walked and stole second, and
quickly came around to score
on Chayten Overholts base
hit. After Tyler Richey singled home Overholt, Jalen
Roberts tripled to deep left

before he scored on a wild

pitch. Dustin Hale singled
and Keli Ralston walked.
After a fielders choice,
Wehri walked Jaden Youstey
to load the bags and Leeth
to force home a run before
escaping with a pop-out.
Leeth then kick-started a
3-run uprising in the fourth,
clubbing a solo home run to
open the inning. A one-out
single by Youtsey and an RBI
double from Richey made it
7-1 before Roberts knocked
in Richey with a base hit.
Youtsey then homered in
the home sixth against Aaron
Sealts, starting a 3-run rally
to provide the 10-run margin,
ending the opening game an
inning early.
In the nightcap, Jennings
again plated a run in the
top of the first, and again,
Lincolnview responded in
the home half. Trailing 3-1
to start the third, however,
the Musketeers put together a 2-out rally. After Adam
Howbert walked to open the
frame, Lancer hurler Ethan
Kempler struckout the next
two batters. Wehri then singled before walks to Hellman
and Alex Sealts, with a
wild pitch mixed in, ended
Kemplers day on the mound.
Two more walks followed.
When the inning was over,
the Musketeers had scored
three times to take a 4-3 lead.

DELPHOS The open ceremonies of the

6th annual Nathan Miller Memorial Baseball
Tournament were held Friday night at Stadium
Park under threatening skies. Nathans parents, Angie and Sam, announced that Carter
Mox and Gaige Rassman of Delphos Jefferson
along with Justin Siefker and Austin Heiing of
St. Johns were chosen as this years recipients.
Each applicant must submit an essay and
then we choose some of most outstanding
applications to come in for a face to face
interview explained Angie. Then based on

their presentation, we pick our winners. Our

first three years, we only had one winner from
each school. Now that we have been established, we decided to expand to a total of four
winners a pair of non-baseball players and
two baseball players.
This year was bittersweet because Austin
and Gaige played on the Diamond Hawks
All-Star team the summer before he passed

opening ceremonies, the rain held off and a
total of eight games were played on four diamonds under ideal conditions.
The first set of games saw the hometown
Delphos Reds drop a 8-4 decision to neighboring Elida and Lima Central Catholic out
slugged Van Wert 12-2.
The Delphos Pirates lost to Shawnee 11-7
in a high scoring affair and Glandorf defeated
St. Marys 4-3 in extra innings.
The Delphos teams remained winless on
the first night of the three day tournament as
the Delphos V.F.W. fell to Kenton 8-5. In the
other 7 p.m. game, Anna rolled over Lima
Bath 7-1.

(Continued from page 6)

In the late games at 9 p.m., Columbus

Grove took on Ft. Loramie and HopewellLoudon faced the Van Wert 11s. (results
unavailable at press time)
The word is starting to get out about our
tournament, said Angie Miller. In the past,
we struggled to fill our 16-team field and now
we have teams calling us to easily fill our
expanded 20 team brackets. In fact, we have
teams from over an hour away like HopewellLoudon, Kenton, and Ft. Loramie coming this
year. We even had to start a waiting list for
teams wanting to get in.
Games will begin at 10 a.m. today with the
Delphos Braves hosting Coldwater. A total of
22 matchups will be on tap at Stadium Park
Saturday with the last games of the day scheduled to begin at 8 pm.
Pool play will start on Sunday at 1 p.m.
concluding with the championship games
first pitch at 5:45 p.m. after closing ceremonies.

Dont Give In To Negativity

There are many ways in which we can fall into negative patterns of thought or behavior. We
all make mistakes, but when we do, we should try to look at them as learning opportunities.
We all occasionally say or do thoughtless things that hurt our friends or families, but when we
do, we should consider it an opportunity to ask for forgiveness, and our relationship might be
deepened thereby. We should all pay closer attention to what we say and do throughout the day.
How much of it is knee jerk negativity? And, not just what we say to others, but how much of
our internal dialogue is filled with negativity? How often do we berate ourselves for minor
mistakes or omissions? We should try to be more like the coach who builds up her athletes
with a pep talk or the teacher who convinces his students that they can work out a difficult
problem. The important question for the track athlete is not whether you won the race but
whether you did your best. Studies show that there are very few times when negativity helps
us; it is almost always better to be an optimist than a pessimist. So, do what you can to throw
the negativity overboard and to have a more positive attitude. Life is good and getting better
and even when its not so good you can still choose to make the best of it.

Opinion

Grad you
own the world
This weekend is a milestone in many of our young adults
lives.
They will move the tassel across their mortar boards and
proclaim to the world, I own you!
Their chests puff with pride as they cross the stage to
receive a hard-earned diploma and proof that they are ready
for whatever comes next.
Many will go on to pursue higher education.
Some will enter the workforce, using skills gained in vocational classes.
Others will join our armed forces to defend the freedoms
we hold so dear.
The last summer before college is a bittersweet one for
most. They feel the tug of adulthood and the freedom of making choices (and mistakes).
Last hurrahs with special school chums fill busy days and
nights while tuition and book fees are earned and last-minute
paperwork is completed.
Parents watch nervously as the pages of the calendar turn
one day closer to their graduate soon-to-be college student
leaving.
Rounds of classmate parties fill the weekends of the first
month with laughter and reminiscing about the good old
days.
Many will make decisions that will shape the rest of their
lives. Some will hold back on the final commitment, content
to explore options.
I graduated from high school in 1983 and from college in

How the goat got its spots

When the first apple blossom burst open upon the
tree, but before the last lethal
frost had tinged its petals, the
goats fur was an even coat of
brown. Although the humans
fed him many different things
and he helped himself frequently to the trees whose
bark flayed so easily at the
trunk, the goat was slim of
frame and nothing disrupted
the smooth umber fur that
ran from his nose to the tip
of his tail.
One day in late spring, the
lady carried a bucket down
the front steps of the people
barn. This was not an unusual
occurrence as each morning a
biped emerged from the front
door with buckets filled either
with fresh water or taste
treats. On this occasion, the
lady wouldnt share the bucket with the goat. She thwarted
every single effort he made to
sample the contents. She did
give him a peanut, but how
can one peanut compare to a
full bucket?
Instead, the woman carried
the bucket to a square bit of
earth, one that was surrounded by a fence. Bucket and
lady went inside the square.
The goat found himself outside the fence, his peanut consumed by a thieving chicken and his stomach wanting
morequite probably a
bucket more.
To add insult to injury, the
cruel human pulled a packet from her pocket, tore it
open and spilled mouthwatering seeds onto the ground, as
well as cool water from the
bucket. On the ground! If the
goat could have shared his
thoughts at that moment in
a human tongue, his speech
would quite likely have been
censored in this space, such
was the level of his frustra-

tion with the seeming waste
of a good something or other.
As this goat was, well, a
goat, he took that frustration
between his stubby teeth and
transformed it into adrenalin.
The muscles in his hindquarters bunched, and with the
strength of, well, an adrenalized goat, he leapt high over
the fence. As fast as his prehensile lips could gather, he
gobbled up every single seed.
With a satisfied belch and a
turn of the hoof, he left the
scene of the crime to look for
some dessert.
But these seeds werent
any old peanut. These seeds
were Ferry-Morse, seeds
guaranteed to grow, moon
and stars watermelon. And
grow they did. First, the
goats trim physique swelled.
His slim belly became quite
a melon itself, causing him
some discomfort during
the night hours. By morning, his velvety brown coat
was speckled with tiny white
spots and one big round one.
And there you have it.
The moral of this story?
If you are a goat, read the
label on your food. Youre a
human, you say? Container
gardens on a second-floor
balcony are where its at, if
theres a goat in the mix.

On the
Other Hand

2000 with a degree in business. Yes, a millennium graduate.

Going back to school after 13 years was a bit difficult to
say the least. My study habits, by that time, were non-existent
unless you counted the time I spent balancing my checkbook.
But, it does prove that you dont have to follow a certain
timeline to get where you want to be. That destination may
also change half a dozen times before the bus stops.
It would take several hands to count the people I know who
have gone to college for one subject and ended up in a career
in a totally different area.
Its not a bad thing to find different areas of interest as you
move through life. Its important that you keep moving.
So to you graduates, I say congratulations. Enjoy your parties, your new jobs and last moments with friends and family.
Stick to your goals and embrace the new-found freedoms
before you. Dont be afraid to tweak those goals now and then
as you find different interests and discover new things. Be
focused but flexible.
Take a risk now and then and do something out of character. Im not talking actions that could jeopardize your future.
Just do something that you have always wanted to, but never
got around to.
Soak up the advice of you parents. They are not clueless.
I dont know why kids insist on learning everything the hard
way. A few absorbed words of wisdom and life can be a lot
easier.
Oh, and, yes, right now, you do own the world.

Letter to the Editor

The spirit of the Constitution

DEAR EDITOR,
Separation of church and state, First Amendment of the
Constitution (Bill of Rights): Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof.
Why would our founding fathers create a separation of
the structure, our constitution, from the foundation of JudeoChristian heritage?
Our founding fathers thought they had our Constitution and
the spirit of the Constitution as such that its very foundation
could not be altered, not even by a sitting president. We can
verify this by Article VI, paragraph 3: but no religious test
shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public
trust under the United States. In other words, you could not
become president and promote or institute your own agenda,
as the foundation had already been laid and the structure, our
Judeo-Christian heritage, put on it. Or so they thought.
We need to lawfully, figuratively and spiritually define the
foundation of our Constitution.
The only way we can do that, as I see it, is to amend the
Declaration of Independence to the Constitution and others.
What we need to do is define our Constitutions beginning
and know the spirit of our Constitution.
A persons last will and testament is understandable if you
know the spirit of the person who wrote it, even if the wording
isnt understandable to us.

Liking people
For the most part, I like people. Dont
get me wrong, there are times when Id
rather not deal with people. There are
other times when there are certain people Id like to avoid. but usually I can
honestly say I like people. Thats just the
way Im wired.
From time to time, Ive had members
of my family say something to me about
how they dont like dealing with people,
or how they would rather not have to
deal with anyone else. My response is
always something like, You shouldnt
say that! Learn to appreciate other people! Oftentimes, other people are the
only entertainment you may get!
When I talk to these family members,
I realize that a person really needs to
either be wired to enjoy others or you
need to spend time adjusting and getting
used to dealing with other people a lot
of the time. Unless my man cave is an
actual cave, there will be other people in
and out of my spaces most days.
It could be that I have built up a
tolerance to other people. Ive spent so
much time with others, Im not surprised
by them, and Im not shocked by them.
Ive spent plenty of years of my life
working in retail sales, where all kinds
of people come in to bother you and ask
you questions you may consider to be
stupid questions. Ive had my share of
customers ask me if the merchandise
Im selling is on sale.

Well, its FOR sale! is my usual

response. Its much less rude than asking if they can see imaginary sale tags
strapped to the merchandise.
Lets face it, some people arent
especially likable. Even Jesus told us
to LOVE our neighbor as ourselves,
but never used the word, like, right?
There are plenty of people that one person could like and someone else may be
annoyed by. Still, I think we are wired
one way or the other, or at least we have
trained ourselves one way or the other.
If you dont like others, youve probably
found no reason to TRY to like most
people.
Last weekend, I worked as a security
person/usher at a major racing facility
in Indianapolis, where I have been,
probably 500 times. My job, essentially, was to help fans have a good time.
Its a wonderful responsibility for me.
Im called upon to answer questions I
mostly know the answers to. I deal with
a bunch of people who are mostly in a
good mood.
After all, they are attending an event
they want to see and experience. Theyre
having fun, and people who are having
fun and are happy are much easier to
deal with than the grumpy guy who
thinks everyone else is in his way, or the
lady who got cheated out of ketchup on
her hot dog because the line at the condiment table was too long.

Ed Gebert

My two
cents
I greeted one gentleman and asked
him how he was doing that morning, and
he answered that he was great. This is
my Christmas! Merry Christmas! How
could you not like a guy like that?
The problem with working there is
the number of intoxicated folk you have
to deal with. Sure, there are happy
drunks who arent too annoying, but
there are great many selfish drunks
who care nothing for common courtesy
and are more worried about finding a
way to stretch the rules to get their own
way.
Thats an attitude I can do without.
Most folks can do without it too. These
are the people who try to take the good
seats that belong to someone else. They
can be found in the $100 a seat section
with ticket stubs for $10 seats, and that
dont understand that they shouldnt be
there. Alcohol can reduce and occasionally eliminate intelligence. But without
the alcohol, these people are often very
pleasant to be with.
Tossing the whole issue of alcohol to
the side, there is nothing like a quarter
of a million to half a million people to
test your ability to tolerate other people.
And for me, its much easier to like
other people than to struggle to deal
with them. Its the same way I learned
to eat broccoli just learn to like them.

Combating prescription drug abuse in Ohio

Drug overdoses are on the rise across Ohio.
In 2013, we saw a record 2,110 fatal overdoses in our
state. Opioid abuse in particular has wreaked havoc across
Ohio, devastating thousands of families. When its easier for
Americans to access opioids than it is for them access help to
treat their addiction, we have a serious problem.
Thats why I worked across the aisle this week to introduce the bipartisan Recovery Enhancement for Addiction
Treatment Act (TREAT Act), which would allow health care
providers to treat larger numbers of patients struggling with
addiction to opioids like painkillers and heroin.
Current law limits the number of patients a health care provider can treat for opioid abuse problems using medication-assisted treatment programs. This has left patients to languish on
waiting lists for critical treatment.
My bill would update U.S. law to enable qualified physicians to treat larger numbers of patients struggling with addiction and, for the first time, allow certain nurse practitioners
and physician assistants to provide supervised, medication-assisted treatment for patients.
We must ensure that there are a variety of treatment options
available for those who need help battling addiction, including
effective medication-assisted treatment. By allowing doctors
to treat more patients and utilize medication-assisted treatment
in combination with behavioral health support, we can change
the course for treating opioid addiction for the better.
Opioid addiction is a chronic disease that, when left untreated, places a large burden on our health care system. Deaths
from opioid overdoses in the United States have increased by
more than five times since 1980. Each year, about 475,000

emergency room visits are

attributable to the misuse and
abuse of opioid pain killers
across the U.S.
We also need to do more
to get drugs out of wrongful
hands. Too many Ohioans can
easily get prescription drugs
from the family medicine cabinet or from family and friends
who no longer use the medicines they were legally prescribed.
Brown
Thats why last week I,
along with several of my
Senate colleagues, sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch urging her to reinstate
the Drug Enforcement Administrations s National Drug
Take-Back Days. This program has successfully provided
Americans with the opportunity to safely turn over unwanted,
unneeded, and expired medications so they dont end up in the
hands of people who may abuse them.
Last Septembers Take-Back Day in Ohio featured 194
sites available for safe drug disposal throughout the state, and
was a tremendous success.
Abuse of prescription drugsespecially painkillerscan
devastate communities. We can and must do more to keep
these medications out of the hands of those who abuse them,
and to get Ohioans dealing with addiction the help that they
need.

The Van Wert County report showed 100

more employed workers and 100 fewer unemployed for the month. The total civilian labor
force estimate was14,300 100 fewer in
April than in March.
Van Wert Countys 3.8 percent unemployment rate was the 77th-lowest county rate in
the state for April. The highest county rates in
Ohio for April were in Monroe County (8.5
percent), Meigs (7.7 percent), Scioto County
(7.1 percent and Adams County (7.1 percent).
The lowest rate were in Hancock County
(3.3 percent, Wyandot County (3.3 percent),

(2.9 percent.)
The good economic news found across the
state line also as Indiana reported a higher
labor force as well. The Hoosier State is now
just 7,800 private-sector jobs shy of the alltime peak of employment, which occurred in
March of 2000. Indianas state unemployment
dropped to 5.4 percent in April, compared
to Ohios 5.2 percent state rate, a one-tenth
of a percent higher than March. Michigan
also reported a 5.4 percent rate in April. The
national unemployment rate for April dropped
from 5.5 percent to 5.4 percent.

activity for 60 minutes or more

each day. While fulfilling those
requirements might not have been
a problem for kids who grew up
before the dawn of the Internet,
nowadays kids are spending less
time playing outside and more
time on their computers or other
devices.
That reality is problematic for
parents who want their kids to
embrace physical activity thanks
to the positive impact that exercise can have on kids physical
and mental well-being. Parents
hoping to instill a love of physical
activity in their youngsters may
find that taking a more active role
by exercising with their kids is an
effective way to get them off the
couch and away from their computer screens.
Turn errands into exercise
opportunities. Many parents take
their children along with them
when running errands. When such
errands dont necessarily require
the use of a car, consider riding
bicycles instead. Kids who otherwise dont enjoy errands may
now find them more fun, all the
while fulfilling their daily recommended quotas for exercise and
spending quality time with their
parents.
Include kids in your own
athletic pursuits. Parents might
not be able to take younger kids
along with them to the gym, but
that does not mean your youngsters must be excluded from all of
your athletic pursuits. If you have
any upcoming athletic activities
or challenges on your schedule,
such as a new recreational sports
season or community fun run
or 5K, let kids tag along as you
train or practice. Parents of adolescents can inquire at their local gyms if they offer discounted
memberships to teens. If so, take
kids along with you on trips to the
gym so they learn the value and
benefits of daily strength and conditioning exercises.

Why buy it when you can make it yourself? is a mantra many crafters or do-it-yourselfers live by. Crafting can be an excellent
outlet for self-expression and an entertaining
way to pass the time. Many crafters even turn
their hobbies into successful business ventures.
This year certain trends are poised to take

Bringing the outside in

An ecologically sound and creative trend

for spring involves crafting your own garden
terrarium. Terrariums can be made out of just
about any shaped glass or plastic container.
Use hardy plants and a moisture-holding substrate to help your terrarium flourish. Terrariums can be interesting focal points for any
room, and theyre a creative use for empty
vases, aquariums and other containers collecting dust.

Make more time to play.

Parents may already have busy
schedules, but finding time to
play with their kids is a great
way to get youngsters to embrace
physical activity. Kids might be
reluctant to shoot hoops in the
driveway if no one is willing to
join them, but they will likely be
far more willing to do so if mom
and dad are willing to play with
them. This is not only a good way
for parents to ensure their kids get
enough exercise, but also a great
and fun way for moms and dads
to make time for physical activity.
Recognize that physical activity does not have to mean organized sports. Some kids have
no interest in team sports while
others do not have the athletic
ability to compete after a certain
age. Parents who want their kids
to exercise more should recognize
that there are plenty of ways to be
physically active that do not involve organized team sports. Hiking; riding bicycles; swimming at
a nearby pool, lake or ocean; and
even going for nightly walks are
all physical activities that people
of all ages and athletic abilities
can enjoy.
Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. While getting kids to put
down their tablets and gaming
system remote controls may not
be easy, parents who resolve to
exercise with their children might
find their youngsters more receptive to regular physical activity.

crafting by storm, while fads of 2014 should

continue. Those making the rounds on Pinterest and crafting blogs may discover the following crafts are trending in 2015.

Natural elements

Crafters are taking their cues from nature,

and youre certain to find natural elements,
such as wood, bark and burlap, in craft projects. Distressed finishes on furniture and
photo frames will still demand attention. Doit-yourself projects, such as turning a slab of
a tree trunk into a table or upcycling wooden
shipping palettes into shelving, also will grow
in popularity. Whenever working on designs
that feature natural materials, try to repurpose
elements whenever possible for the most rustic, authentic feel.

Chevron and diamonds

Those sprucing up home decorating elements with stencils or chalk paint can find inspiration in many places. Patterns that continue to show up in abundance include chevron
and various incarnations of the diamond. Its
easy to dress up just about any element with
some well-placed stenciling, which does not
necessarily require a wealth of skill or experience. Stencils also can be used on flooring to
create a faux area rug effect.

Color of the Year

If you get giddy over the warmth of browns

and reds, you will be enamored with Pantones 2015 Color of the Year. The authority on color and a provider of color systems,
Pantone has chosen Marsala to be the it
shade for 2015. Blending burgundy and brown
tones to create a hue perfect for filling a wine
glass or painting dining room walls, you will
see plenty of this robust shade in decorative

Each year brings with it a new crafting obsession. This year its poised to be watercolor
painting. Classes are bound to pop up in craft
stores and other hobby centers near you. Or
you can experiment at home with just a few
basic tools.
Another growing paint trend is to enjoy
a ladies night out that pairs painting with
wine and socialization. Participants work on a
painting over a predetermined number of sessions and then take their masterpieces home.

Spring into green

Green hues and floral and foliage patterns

for decorating will be popular this year. Anyone can liven up interior spaces with elements
that borrow from nature, including leaf patterns and flowers.
Crafting continues to be a popular form
of expression and a beloved pastime. Certain
trends emerge each year that set the course for
do-it-yourself projects.

Did you know?

Parents have long relied on coupons to help

them reduce the cost of raising their families.
While it might once have been necessary to
scan grocery store circulars and break out the
scissors to take advantage of store discounts,
more and more consumers are now turning to
digital coupons offered via their mobile devices to save money. According to eMarketer, a
firm that covers digital marketing, media and
commerce, the number of adults who redeem
coupons via their mobile devices is expected
to rise to roughly 104 million people by 2016.
Thats a significant uptick from the number of
digital couponers in 2014, when a little more
than 78.5 million adults took advantage of
digital coupons offered via their mobile devices. The growing popularity of mobile coupons
has sparked increased interest among marketers, as eMarketer projects that 44.5 percent of
marketers will offer mobile coupons in 2016,
compared to just 36.5 percent in 2014. Families looking to save money on their nextshopping trip would be wise to take their mobile
devices along with them.

Tank back on guard at Legion post

The World War II 1943 Stewart M5-A1 tank is back on guard on the east side of
American Legion Post 268. Volunteers Jim Mox, Ron Beining, Chuck Etzkorn and Steve
Miller placed the tank on its concrete pad early Thursday afternoon. The tank was featured in the Alger Memorial Day Parade and took first place in Most Original. It also
participated in the Lima Memorial Day Parade. At one time, the tank had sat on the
Delphos Public Library property. It was moved to the Legion Post in the late 1950s. (DHI
