Balancing act

The 39th annual

event is set for June 6
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
What started as a sidewalk sale
for businesses on Main Street in
Moorestown 39 years ago has
morphed into a town-wide event
involving not only businesses, but
organizations and groups for a
fun, family-friendly day.
The Moorestown Business Association will once again host a
slew of exciting and entertaining
activities while featuring the
local merchants of Moorestown
with its 39th Moorestown Day.
Moorestown Day is held on the
first Saturday of June, which this
year is June 6, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. on Main Street, stretching
from Church Street to Chester Avenue. The event will take place
rain or shine.
We have vendors, a pie eating
contest, Kids Zone, theater performances, food, music and more.
Its a big fun, festive day where
the streets are closed and it is safe
to walk around and enjoy what
Moorestown has to offer, Mark
Morgan, MBA member and forplease see EVENT, page 14

Moorestown schools take first Fridays to help food pantries

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

Fridays might seem like a day

to kick back and relax. However,

Moorestown Township Public

Schools arent relaxing just yet.
They take their first Friday of
each month to do something good
with a program called Food For
All.
The program is a community
service project of the MTPS
where each school collects food
and donates it to three local food
pantries, which serve a large variety of local citizens. The program
is
co-sponsored
by
the
Moorestown Education Association with the help of Live Civilly,
MooreKids and the Moorestown
Home and School Association.
The whole point of the program is to bring the community
together and get the kids involved
in the whole process, Maddie
Farmer, Moorestown High School
junior and Food For All volunteer,
said.
Food For All was started by a
family in Massachusetts and
found its way here through
Sharon Kulik, a kindergarten
teacher at Baker Elementary
School. From there it grew and
other organizations got involved
as well as the schools to make

Food For All Fridays. This May

was the first full year of the program being in place at the
schools.
Student volunteers like juniors
Farmer, Molly Rozelle and
William Stewart interviewed the
heads of three local food pantries
to see how much they needed,
what they needed and if they
would cooperate with the schools.
The food pantries that were eventually chosen were Moorestown
Ministerium Food Panty of St.
Matthew Lutheran Church, the
First
Baptist
Church
of
Moorestowns Food Pantry and
Moorestowns
Bethel
AME
Churchs Food Pantry.
The junior volunteers found the
pantries often ran out of food certain months and werent able to
provide for many of the individuals and families who needed it,
many of whom are Moorestown
residents. They needed more cooperation from the community and
an equal amount of donations
spread across the year.
From our perspective, they

Relay for Life really gives people such a big hope, and were really trying to stop (cancer). With
everyones help, we can raise
more money and do more research so we can eventually stop
this horrible disease, Allison
Schurr, Relay leader, said.
Moorestowns Relay for Life
started when Schurr, along with
her friend Caroline McCoy, wanted to bring the event to town.
They had been going to Relay for
Life events in other locations
such as Ocean City, Schurr said,
starting in 2008 after her grandfather passed away from cancer.
She felt Moorestown, being such a
community-based town, would be
a good fit to host an event.
Moorestown is definitely community based and likes to get involved. I decided to bring it all
home and make it a communitywide event so everyone can participate in it, Schurr said.
In January 2014, Schurr started a club, reached out to the local
ACS organization and got in
touch with Mat Ogin, community
manager for Relay For Life. Ogin
said he was originally looking
into Moorestown for hosting an
event and that it seemed like the
right opportunity.
They felt very strongly and
had amazing energy to bring the
relay to their hometown. They
had a compelling argument. We
had loved the area and were already looking at it. So it seemed it
was a fortuitous event, Ogin
said.
The kick off will start around 6
p.m. with remarks, and then professional caregivers will give
medals to survivors. After that, a
survivors lap with caregivers or
family members will be taken followed by a survivor reception dinner supplied by Famous Daves.
Then, the DJ on stage will kick
off the event with energizing
music, games and activities while
people walk around the high
school track. Games include soccer, kickball and volleyball as well
as dunk tanks. Performances by
local bands and singers such as

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

here arent too many times

when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys
ban on self-service gas stations? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

Writer: Its virtually impossible
to turn New Jersey around
Your editorial New Jersey Needs a
New Deal was a pretty good example of
why the supposedly great state of New Jersey will, and should, remain at the very
bottom of the places to live and conduct
business in the country.
First, let me say that I will be relocating
to Delaware after being a Moorestown resident for more than 45 years. Property taxes
are the sole reason I am leaving. I have had
to take Social Security early just to help
pay these taxes, which I feel are nothing
more than flushing hard-earned money
down a clogged toilet.
Then, I saw your editorial, which reinforced my decision to finally get out of this
place once and for all.
You say New Jersey needs a new deal

to turn things around because FDR used a

New Deal to get the country out of the
Great Depression. Im sorry to disappoint
you, but the New Deal didnt do any such
thing.
On May 9, 1939, Henry Morganthau, a
close friend and secretary of the Treasury
to FDR as well as the key architect of the
New Deal, reported to the House Ways and
Means Committee the following words: "I
want to see this country prosperous. I want
to see people get a job. I want to see people
get enough to eat. We have never made
good on our promises." "I say after eight
years of this administration, we have just
as much unemployment as when we started. ... And an enormous debt to boot.
That speech was given seven years after
the New Deal started. Average unemployment for the whole year in 1939 would be
higher than in 1931, before FDR came into
office. The New Deals massive spending

on public works programs didnt alleviate

high unemployment nor did it produce a
recovery. That took World War II.
And you propose that New Jersey initiate some similar programs to spend itself
out of this economic malaise its in? There
is a problem with your logic.
New Jersey is the most dysfunctional
and corrupt state in the union and deserves to be in the position its in. It has become a place that benefits only two groups
of people. The first are those who work in
state, county and municipal government
service and receive lucrative salaries, pensions and all those other incredible fringe
benefits. The others are the families who
receive a free education for their children
in the public/government school system.
For the rest of us, and Ill speak for myself,
Ive gotten nothing for the vast sums Ive

will be located near Aunt Selmas
Candy Shop on Main Street.
The Department of Parks and

Department representatives will

the annual Moorestown Public
Schoolss District Art Show, sponsored by MoorArts. The art show
is located at the Church Street
Recreation Center. The Department of Parks and Recreation

and MoorArts have been longstanding community partners

and work together throughout
the year to promote the arts in
Moorestown. From the Holiday
Arts Festival and MoorMotion to
the District Art show, the Department of Parks and Recreation is
proud to have MoorArts as a community partner.
Each spring, the Church Street
Recreation Center opens its doors
to host the Annual District Art
Show sponsored by MoorArts to

the
talents
of
Moorestown youth, kindergarten

Art Show is an amazing display of
the talents of our local young
artists. Admission to the show is
free and light refreshments are
available to all who attend. Additionally there will be free childrens face painting and free
crafts. This event is a perfect example of the activities and partnerships that exist within
Moorestown and through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Building upon recreation
philosophy, the District Art Show
highlights the importance of
recreation in our community.
The District Arts Show is located

on the third floor of the Church

Street Recreation Center and is
just minutes from Main Street.
According
to
humankinetics.com, recreation
is an activity that people engage
in during their free time, that people enjoy, and that people recognize as having socially redeeming
values. Recreational pursuits
are a means by which to balance
our lives and refresh ourselves
from our work and duties. People
have long used recreation programs and services to produce socially desirable outcomes, such as
the wise use of free time, physical
fitness and positive youth development. Moorestonians are fortunate to live in a community that
provides organized recreation
programs to meet a variety of
physical, psychological and social
needs has led to recreation playing a role as a social instrument
for well-being and, in some cases,
change.
So visit the Department of
Parks
and
Recreation
on
Moorestown Day. Become one of
the thousands of members of the
Recreation Nation and find the
recreational outlet that is right

LETTER
Continued from page 6
paid to Moorestown and New Jersey over the years.
And Im not the only one who
feels this way. I talk to so many
people who have left, want to
leave and are leaving the state.
People are fleeing New Jersey
faster than any other state.
I believe it is virtually impossible to turn this state around so it
will ever be a reasonable place to
live and work in again. Those on
the receiving end of the outrageous taxes collected will not
allow it to happen. You cannot fix
the problem unless there is structural and fundamental reform at

all levels, a process that would

drastically affect public sector
employment and which, by its
very nature, wants to remain unchanged and continue to slug
along perpetually in its money
grubbing ways. Asinine politicians passing bills that rebate a
few hundred dollars back to
homeowners does nothing more
than mask the problem.
I will thankfully be leaving this
deplorable state shortly.
My
property tax bill will reduce from
$8,000 per year to $1,400 year, and
that $1,400 will cut in half after
three years, as Ill be over 65 years
old. My new house is bigger, nicer
with lots more ground than my
New Jersey property and is six
miles from the beach. From what
my new neighbors tell me, the

schools down there educate their

children just as well as they do in
New Jersey. Children still go on to
college and become successful. So
many of the people Ive already
met down there are former New
Jersey residents who have relocated.
So thats it, Moorestown Sun.
Go continue helping to perpetuate the problems and dont rile
the feathers of any school administrators, teachers, politicians,
government unions, public school
parents or anyone else who might
be threatened by a change to the
status quo.
Ive wiped my hands of the
dreadful place at last. It wont be
able to suck anything more out of
me.

their day and worked closely with
their non-Jewish counterparts on
behalf of activist causes including suffrage, birth control and

This book reveals how American Jewish women, many unrecognized until now, used their religion and cultural heritage to inform and inspire their identity as
women struggling to become citizens and political actors in the

mer president, said. Were very
lucky to have a Main Street and
be able to host this event. It is
kind of a gift to the town for us to
provide.
This
long-standing
Moorestown tradition hosts local
merchants with sidewalk sales
and booths, featuring more than
200 merchants, groups and vendors lining Moorestowns Main
Street. All spots have already sold
out, promising a day packed full
of things to see and do.
There is so much to see and so
many people to talk to. It is a
great way to find out what is
going on in town. It is kind of a
billboard of what is going on in
Moorestown for both residents
and visitors, Morgan said.

Families with children can

enjoy entertainment once again
in the Moorestown Day Kids
Zone, located near the Chester Avenue end of Main Street. The
Kids Zone will feature giant inflatables, fun games, a petting zoo,
camel rides, face painters, a balloon artist and DJ.
If youve never ridden a
camel, definitely come and try it,
Morgan said.
Pie Lady Caf will host the popular pie eating contest. Sign ups
for this event will take place at
the cafe.
The pie eating contest is a really fun thing to see and participate in, Morgan said.
There is plenty of free parking
available on side streets and other
open parking lots. However, if
you dont want to park and walk
far, Lincoln Technical Institute is
providing free parking and a free
shuttle service throughout the
day. Follow the signs to park in its

large lot at 308 W. Route 38, or

enter from Harper Drive and look
for the LTI buses. The shuttle will
drop attendees off at High Street,
one block from Main Street and
the center of the action.
Moorestown Day is only once
a year, so that makes it really special. It is one of the jewels of the
Moorestown event calendar and a
great way to kick off the summer, Morgan said.

The Historical Society of

Mansion, located at 12 High
Street on Saturday, June 6 from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m., in conjunction with

Among the demonstrations
that the group will showcase will
be the type of medical care soldiers received in the mid-19th
century, the types of weapons
used, and even children's games
from that era.
The 4th New Jersey Regiment
was formed in 2012 and has members from all over the state. The

non-perishables, such as canned
goods or powdered mixes.
A few days before Food For All
Friday, MEA reusable blue bags
are placed in the mailboxes of
teachers. An email from H&A will
be sent to parents as well, as a reminder the collection day is coming up.
On Food for All Friday, students deposit their food items in
bags that are displayed. Once the
children have placed their items
in the bags, they are put in the
hallways. Bags are then collected
by volunteers, which include par-

ents, students and teachers.

The food is sometimes sorted
and bagged according to food
types; otherwise it is then delivered to the local food pantries by
parent volunteers.
Its not difficult. If everyone
brought in one can of food each
month from the schools, that
would be a lot of donations and a
lot of help, MHS teacher Lisa
Trapani said.
The MEA donated the reusable
bags to collect the food items in
through a grant. Teachers who
are MEA members volunteer in
each building to organize the
monthly event.
We had a lot of positive feedback and a lot of people benefit
from the program. They talk very
highly of the Food For All program and relationships with the
schools, Farmer said.
According to Rozelle, in the the
high school and middle school,
the program isnt receiving as
much participation as they had
hoped, which they are working on
to change. However, they said the
response in the lower schools is
great, as they have all of the stu-

dents fully participate in the collection.

The younger schools had students fully participate in the collection to make it more real. They
let them know that people in the
community use this pantry and
that is important we all participate. To grow up and spread that
idea a little more, knowing that it
is important to help people, is a
great benefit of the program,
Rozelle said.
The food pantries were very
grateful for the donations the
schools have provided.
Trapani hopes students who
participate in the program realize
the importance of giving back to
your own community and how a
little effort and organization can
go a long way.
Id like them to get a sense of
the importance of giving back to
your own community, that there
are people in Moorestown who
utilize the food bank, and it even
helps others from surrounding
communities. It also shows how
with little effort you can help a lot
of people through organizing,
Trapani said.

JUNE 39, 2015 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 23

Goal is to raise $15,000

the community to come together
for a good cause in a great atmosphere and compassion, draw peoples attention to the programs offered by the ACS and where donation dollars are going, and also to
celebrate cancer survivors and
caregivers by giving them the appreciation and love they deserve,
Ogin said.
This event means the world to
those affected by cancer. It is a
second chance at life. It is another
hope and way to get the word out
there to help stop cancer, Schurr
said.
To sign up for Moorestowns
Relay for Life and create a team,
go
to
RelayForLife.org/MoorestownHighNJ.
The goal is to raise $15,000 and
have 200 people participate in the
event. As of Wednesday, May 20,
there were 17 teams and 116 participants who have raised
$12,354.28.
From this event, Ogin and

GOAL
Continued from page 4

Courtney Halpin will also go on

during the relay. Food and concession stands will be available as
well.
Around 9:30 p.m., a Luminaria
Ceremony will be held where people donate money to have a bag
made in memory of someone who
passed or in honor of a cancer
survivor. These bags will line the
track and be lit up like lanterns
while relay goers take a quiet
walk of reflection around the
track to think about those who
are still fighting, have beaten or
have passed away from cancer.
I think it is the most poignant
and memorable part of the relay
event, Ogin said.
The closing ceremony will be
held around midnight.
It is a great opportunity for

Schurr hope people take away information about how to help in

the fight against cancer, to honor
those who have or had cancer, and
to know they can make a difference.
I hope they take away that
they can make a difference in
their community, even worldwide. It starts with one person
and one hope, and they can make
a change in someones life,
Schurr said.
For more information on Relay
for Life, go to RelayForLife.org or
call (800) 227-2345. For specific
questions about the Moorestown
Relay for Life, contact Ogin at
