Depression
Abstract
Characteristicaffectmayinfluencethedevelopmentofresilience.Higherlevelsofresiliencemayinturndecreasethelikelihoodofindividuals
developingsymptomsofdepression.Allfirstyearpsychologystudents(N=217)wererecruitedinthislongitudinalstudytoexaminewhether
resiliencemediatestherelationshipbetweencharacteristicaffectandsymptomsofdepression.Onehundredandsevenstudentscompletedsurvey
measuresatthestartofasemesterandagain3monthslater.Resultsindicatedthatgreaternegativeaffectpredictedworseningofdepressive
symptomsover3months,whilegreaterpositiveaffectpredictedalesseningofdepressivesymptomsover3months.Resiliencefullymediated
theeffectsofpositiveaffectonchangeindepressionandpartlymediatedtheeffectsofnegativeaffectonchangeindepression.Theseresultsare
interpretedinthecontextofahierarchicalmodelofaffectandtheBroadenandBuildTheory,whichmayexplainhowresiliencearisesfrom
positiveaffectandmediatesbetweenaffectandsymptomsofdepressionovertime.
