Concept Note for Piperack Analysis and Design:

This concept note describes the analysis and design considerations for piperack modules (E-W
common piperack in WBS 391, 392 & 393). This will include both in-place (operation and test
condition analysis) and transportation analysis. This E-W piperack segment consists of three
types of modules:
i)

18 modules of 30 wide, 20 high.

ii)

6 modules of 20 wide, 20 high.

iii)

1 module of 15 wide, 20 high.

Software used:
1. STAAD.Pro V8i (Selectseries 4 or above) for structural analysis and design.
2. Foundation 3D for foundation design.

Design Code:

AISC 14th edition (ASD method) shall be considered for structural steel design.

For concrete foundation design, ACI 318-08 shall be considered.

In-place Condition:
Loads:
1. Dead Load:
1.1 Self-weight of Structural Steel: Self-weight of structural steel is increased by 10% to
cater for connections and un-modelled steel.
1.2 Pipe Load: Sizes of major pipes are only available. As the sizes of other pipes are not
known precisely, they are assumed to be smaller than 10. Hence, a carpet load of 40


psf is considered for piping load as per Structural Design Criteria. For pipe sizes higher
than or equal to 14, additional concentrated load has been considered.
1.3 Cable Tray Load: One Electrical Cable tier has been considered. Cable tray load for
single tier has been considered as 20 psf. No walkway for the cable tier has been
considered.
2. Live Load: As there is no walkway considered, live load will not be applicable.
3. Wind Load: The characteristics of liquid and type of pipe (process / utility) are not known.
The common piperack modules have considered as Secondary Facilities in line with the
Wind Design Basis and Calculation for Piperack Area 1. Following parameters have
been considered:

4. Seismic Load: The characteristics of liquid and type of pipe (process / utility) are not
known. The common piperack modules have considered as FERC Category 2 (ASCE 7


Essential Facilities) in line with the Seismic Design Basis and Calculation for Piperack
Area 1. Hence, Design Earthquake (DE) has been considered. Following parameters
have been considered:

5. Friction Load, Anchor & Guide Load: The characteristics of liquid and type of pipe
(process / utility) are not known. Again, pipe stress data is not available anchor & guide
load input not available.


For superstructure design, friction load is considered as 15% of pipe operating weight and
applied in both X-direction (Longitudinal) as well as Z-direction (Transverse). In absence of
pipe stress input, anchor load equal to 10% of operating load and guide load equal to 5% of
operating load shall be considered.
For foundation design, anchor and guide load is considered as 5% of pipe operating weight
and applied in both X-direction (Longitudinal) (for anchor load) as well as Z-direction
(Transverse) (For Guide Load) in line with Shell DEP 34.00.01.30. Friction load is not
considered for foundation design.
Load Combinations:
Load combinations shall be considered as per Cl. 4.2 of Structural Design Criteria (Doc. No.
185251-000-CS-BD-00006).


Transportation Analysis:
Parameters, loads and load combinations shall be considered as per Pipe Rack Module Study
(Doc. No. 185251-CL05506-01) and CMS document Modular Steelwork Design (Doc. No.
CMS-830-03-GL-01013. AISC ASD analysis method (14th edition) has been considered for
structural analysis and design.

Sea Analysis:
For Sea Transportation analysis, 250x72x16 barge shall be considered. In absence of detailed
dimensions and CG input, the following dimensions has been considered in line with Pipe Rack
Module Study (Doc. No. 185251-CL05506-01) and FEED calculation:

Land Transport Analysis:


For land transport analysis, section 5.7 of Pipe Rack Module Study (Doc. No. 185251CL05506-01) shall be considered. In absence of actual data of SPMT from Heavy Haul
Contractor, Scheuerle SPMT 94 has been considered.
Lift Analysis:
All modules shall be designed for lifting. Single crane will be used for lifting module 80 or less in
length. For modules longer than 80, two cranes will be used ( i.e. dual lift). For lift analysis,
section 5.11 of Pipe Rack Module Study (Doc. No. 185251-CL05506-01) shall be considered.
