OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2009 PRAYER LETTER
“Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.” 1 Samuel 7.12
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
We certainly have experienced the Truth of this verse as the LORD has truly helped us this far here in Brazil. In spite of all the challenges that come with taking up His cross and following Him daily, He has graciously allowed us to stand firm as we “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” We give God all the glory for what has been accomplished in 2009, and we especially thank each and everyone one of you who have faithfully supported us both financially and through prayers all these years. We hope you have enjoyed a great time of fellowship with friends and family this Christmas season, and wish you all a Blessed New Year. Let's begin with ...
Lázaro, standing between me and his nephew Delmar, has recently trusted Christ as his Savior. Delmar and his family (right), all 5, got saved a couple of years ago when my family and I visited him. This family has been a blessing to us at our new ministry. Delmar had a hard time holding back the tears when he saw his uncle get saved!
Eva, Evelin, & Everton – Eva, the mother, and two of her 3 sons are in this picture. Eva's story is one of those that amazes us and keeps us moving on for the Lord. Five months ago I walked into a drugstore and handed a Gospel tract to the attendants and two more to Eva and her other son who were in line. When I walked to my car, she and her son came after me and said,”Are you a Baptist Preacher?” I said, “Yes, ma'am.” She said “I like to hear Baptist Preachers.” She then told me she was attending a church, a prosperity-take-all-that-you-have type of church that has started here in Brazil and has spread out to many countries. I tried to schedule a visit to her home back then, to no avail. On the last week of December, Eva calls and me and asks me if I remembered her, and invites us over to visit with her. The four of us went there and, while my kids were getting to know her kids, Eva shared all of her major concerns in life. To make a long story short: she was not saved yet, but on December 29 after I presented the Gospel to her, Eva, praying on her knees, with tears got saved! She gets up and says, “Wow, what a burden has been lifted. Now I know for sure I am saved!” The next week, we go back to her home to start discipleship class and her daughter Evelin (below) sits at the table to join us for the study, when the Spirit led me to ask her if she was certain she would go to Heaven when she died and she said, “No.” Then I told her to chat with Rosa while I taught her mom. Evelin got saved. After Rosa presented the plan of salvation, Rosa asked her if she wanted to receive Christ as her Lord and Savior and she said,”That's what I had been waiting for”. Then, I took this picture, and before Everton left the room he too got saved that same evening! Talk about joy! Eva has kept a very strong testimony since she got saved. The first thing she did was to tell her unsaved, boyfriend to pack up and hit the road! Her former “Pastor” came by to visit her, and she told them that when she was in their church they were just interested in her money; now she has Christ in her heart and has found a Pastor and wife who cares for the souls of people. We praise the Lord to be used by Him to lead souls to Jesus. We are looking into starting a new ministry in her home, in the next town over. She lives in a neighborhood called New Hope. Sounds like a good name for a Baptist Church already!
Alana came along with a new couple in our church and, after she attended a few
services she was convicted of her sin and got saved on her own at home. After one of the invitations given at our church, her friend noticed that she had not raised her hand for salvation so she approached her and asked her if she would get saved, and Alana said, “I did it, this afternoon, at home!” Please pray for these new converts.
Missions Conference in 2009 we had our newest missionary family over for our conference. Brother Wanderley was a former professional soccer player (you might mistake him for Pele!) God saved him and called him to do church planting work. He and his family are faithfully planting a church in São Paulo. Our church took them on for support earlier in the year. The other couple next to me and Rosa are also supported by our church, and have a church-plant ministry among the Germans in a nearby town.
Missionary over – Milton, Macapá - Milton (below) came over to present his
ministry in our church. He, his wife and little baby work among an Indian tribe in the Amazons. What a blessing to get to know this Brother's work – so many things happen in the jungle that we have no idea. He is with New Tribes Mission in Brazil. He is on our waiting list and we hope to take him on soon this year, as the Lord blesses our Faith Promise Program.
Canvassing – We have knocked on 70 doors in this housing complex, and delivered a
John & Romans plus a Gospel tract in every home. Lázaro, mentioned above, received this literature and began to read. That's how he decided to come to our meeting on Sunday morning. He said he had been considering salvation since he got that reading material. Praise the Lord for good literature that contain a Word that never returns void. We had some other good contacts, and hope to have more people join us and hopefully start a new church there. We meet every Sunday morning here.
HOME WITH THE LORD
Funeral - one of the older ladies of our church, Tereza, went to be with the Lord, and I
got the chance to preach another funeral this year. Her son had a stroke, was in a coma for 23 days, she went to visit him and could not take the situation. He was moved out of ICU and is now doing well, but she wound up taking his place in the ICU and died a few days later. This man is a miracle of God. The whole medical team said that he would not survive, after they had cut his head open 7 inches to remove a blood clot. His name is also Lázaro (Lazarus) – I said God raised another Lazarus! He said the hospital bed would shake every night after he came out of the comma as he prayed, crying out to God to heal him. What a testimony. His mother was a great soul winner, so I used her as an illustration throughout my message that day to give out the Gospel to the lost. No decision was made, but God helped me to give a clear presentation of the saving Message. It is a joy to preach the funeral for the saved!
Other programs we had this last quarter of 2009 include a family retreat in a nearby town, men's meeting, Children's Day activities, a cantata, Christmas service, and a baby dedication. A baby dedication is always a great time of joy and opportunity to share the biblical attitude of “giving back” one's baby to God. I explained to the lost Catholic family visitors that infant baptism has no biblical meaning and then I proceeded to give the parents a charge as to raise their child in God's way and discipline her biblically; so they promised to do just that before God and our church. This time we dedicated cute little Julia, Deymes' and Silvia's daughter. Her parents are both Sunday School teachers in our church and lawyers by professional occupation.
Bible's Day -
Here in Brazil, we celebrate Bible's Day on the second Sunday of December. A good time to honor God's precious Word as a church.
I close this letter with a very special blessing: our son John Mark turned 18 years old on December 30. We count it a great blessing to have raised him (and his Brother Lucas, 15) for the Lord. They both have been a great asset to our ministry. Until next time, the Lord willing. God bless you all. Vlademir Silveira
