An Unknown kind of discrimination: the mistreatment and lack of accommodations for
Transgender Students attending and living at Herkimer College
Herkimer College, a college that sits in the middle of a quite community., it sits
on top of a hill that over looks a town called Herkimer. Sadly what was once a thriving
community has slowly declined into almost nothing. This decline has stunted the
college’s ability to modernize and evolve with the times. One area that has strongly
suffered is the colleges policy when it comes to dealing with LGBTQ students. Not only
is the schools policy outdated but the housing policy in regards to Transgender students is
virtually nonexistent. The current policy regarding transgender students is not only
unclear but for students that are pre-op are put into housing that is based off of their
perceived gender. For example if a student is transgender male to female, she would be
put with two male roommates instead of putting her with two female roommates.
Transgender students, regardless of being pre or post-operation, should be placed in
housing based on their gender identity not on their biological sex.

expression, sexual orientation , transitioning ,or even biological sex means. The first step
