Background

Finding the ideal place to live is no easy task. In fact it can be so

hard that people need television programs to help them! Today
you are going to be taking on the role(s) of Phil Spencer and
Kirsty Allsop who you might have seen on Channel 4 presenting
the popular programme: ‘Location, Location, Location’.

When Phil and Kirsty are at work they are actually doing a lot of
geography! They are thinking about where particular people would
like to live and their different needs.

Finding a house for an elderly couple can be very different to

finding a house for a young family. They need to look at lots of
maps, find out about the local area and make decisions based on
what they have seen!

TODAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO THE SAME !

Your mission
Working in groups of 4-5 you are going to become ‘Location,
Location, Location’ assistants. Your group will gain a lot of data
about the area around KES as a place to live. It is your job to help
them find the perfect house for several different families.

Jim and Christina Last

 A young married couple with two small children, Katie aged 5 and
Christopher aged 3.
 Jim is employed at the sorting office on Austin Fields.
 They are looking for a small modern house with a good-sized garden and
room to park a car on a driveway.
 Ideally they would like to be away from the main road for safety

Mike and Joan Smith

 A retired couple in their late 60s, they are looking to move to King’s Lynn
to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
 They would like a bungalow which is close to a local bus route and within
walking distance of the train station as neither of them drive.
 It would be handy to have a post box near by.
 They would like to be in a quiet location with little traffic and peaceful
surroundings.

Newsha Saheed
 She is 30 years old and works in the town centre during the week.
 Newsha is a keen gardener and requires a large house with plenty of
space for her 3 dogs.
 She would also like to be able to have an open space nearby, where she
can easily walk the dogs.
 She would prefer a house with ‘character’ and close to the main road for
work.

What about you?

What you need to do
In your groups you need to collect data about each of the
sites labeled 1-4 on the map.

You will only get around 10 minutes at each site so it

would be a good idea to split into smaller groups and
collect different parts of the data:

• A labeled field sketch of the site

• Traffic survey
• House type survey
• Local service survey

You will also need to think about the three families who
are looking for homes in the area and which site will best
suit them.

On the large A3 map of the area you will see most of the
houses have been drawn on and some numbered. You
might like to pick out specific houses for each of the
families which you feel best meets their requirements.
Task A: Traffic Survey Data

Method: Make sure you have a watch – time for FOUR minutes at each site and note down the traffic that passes at each site.
Do this using tally marks

Task B: House type survey

Method: A fairly simple observation survey. At each site spend a little time gaining
an overall impression of the area. Tick the box that sums up the housing type. If it
is half and half, say half semi-detached and detached, then you can tick both.

Task C: Availability of Local Services

Method: Give each service a score 1-4 depending on its closeness to the site
being studied. Some might be very close to the site and others might be a good
distance away. This may involve a bit of estimation on your part. It will help to
look at the maps as well. This is particularly useful when you are deciding which
sites are best for the different families.

Key
The score given is linked to the time it takes to reach a service by walking :

1 = Less than a minute away

2= Approx 1-2 minutes
3= Approx 2-5 minutes
4= More than 5 minutes

label these onto your

that gives you a Public telephone

with some interesting Post box

Take around 5 Bus stop

Which ‘Location, Location, Location’ have you gone for?

In your working groups you need to discuss the data you have collected from the fieldwork
and use this to find the different families an ideal location that meets their requirements.

However, you might find that meeting ALL these requirements is impossible to be fulfilled so
you will need to be prepared to compromise. Pick out the most important parts for each
family.

Write down your final decisions below. You might like to back up your answers by using the
data you have collected as evidence. E.g. We have decided site x is best because it is very
quiet. The traffic survey proves this as only 2 cars came past and a bicycle.
