Activity 1 :
Read the talk by a nutritionist.
Good morning, students. Today I would like to talk about the importance of
breakfast. Do you know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Yet,
most of you do not bother to eat a good breakfast.
There are two main reasons why breakfast is the most important meal.
First, it replaces food reserves that has been used up during the night. I am sure
many of you think that your body does not use up any energy while you are
sleeping. Thats not true. Do you know that there are many organs in your body
like the heart and lungs that do not stop working even though you are sleeping?
Sugar stored in the liver is transformed into glucose in the night. During this time,
your body gets energy from the glucose. Thus, in the morning, your energy
reserves are lower and need to be replaced.
Second, breakfast provides you energy to work during the morning. This will
prevent you from feeling weak by mid-morning. This feeling of weakness is due to
the low amount of glucose in the blood. When your glucose level is low, you will
feel tired and will not be able to concentrate on your lessons.
Professor Grande Covian, a well-known nutritionist said, `going without
breakfast is a bad habit. By mid-morning those who have not taken their breakfast
are less efficient and are not able to concentrate well. This may explain why they
obtain low grades in their studies. They are more tired, accident-prone and
irritable than those who have eaten breakfast. So, it is very important that you
have a well-balanced breakfast. It provides you the energy and nutrients to make
you healthier and keep you alert for the day ahead.
Some of you may argue.` what if I have no appetite when I get up? Well, this
could happen if you have a late or a large supper. I suggest that you cut down on
your supper or eat it earlier and you will discover that you will wake up with an
appetite. Take breakfast before you come to school. Youll be surprised how much
better you can perform at school. Thank you.

TIPS FOR GREAT NAPS

Napping can be a great way to catch up on sleep, increase productivity and

became more creative. Napping puts the body in a relaxed state, which helps to
combat daily stress. Studies show that napping can actually decrease your risk of
dying from heart disease. Different people have different nap styles. You can
experiment with some of the napping techniques below and see what works for
you.
NAP TIME
The best nap time is from 1 pm to 3 pm, when your energy level dips due to a
rise of a hormone at that time of day.

DARKNESS
Use a face mask of eye pillow to provide daytime darkness and make your nap
more effective.

NOT TOO LATE

Napping within three hours of bedtime may interfere with nighttime sleep.

QUIET PLACE
Make sure that you will not be disturbed for the duration of your nap.

30-MINUTE MAXIMUM
When taking a nap longer than 30 minutes, you may fall into deep sleep, which
leave you feeling tired and groggy. Naps as short as 1 to 2 minutes could be
effective for some people. Set an alarm : You will eventually train yourself to nap
for the amount of time you set aside. Untill then, set alarm or ask someone to
wake you up.

INSTRUCTIONS :
Read the personal opinion below, based on the topic Living in the countryside is better
than living in the city. Then complete the table according to the text.

I think that living in the countryside is better than living in the city.
Life in the countryside is more relaxing than the city. There
is no hassle and people are not always in a rush to go somewhere.
The people usually work on the farms, orchards or gardens at their
own pace. No specific time is required to start as well as to stop
their works. In the city they have to log in using punch card
machines to record the time of arrival and the time of departure at
work. Therefore, all workers must be punctual.
There is clean and fresh air in the countryside and the
atmosphere is always peaceful. There is no pollution whether air or
noise. We do not hear loud music blaring out from the shops or clink
clangs of machines from the motor repair shops or factories. When
we exercise, we breathe in fresh air and this keeps us healthier.
Life in the city is hectic with everyone seems to be in a rush.
They are perpetually on the go, going from one mall to another, one
office to another and one appointment to another. Besides, the city
is always polluted as there are fumes from vehicles that move nonstop, factories and modern equipment.
As people in the city are always in hurry, they tend to eat
fast food, lots of canned and packet food and frozen food which are
neither healthy nor cheap. In the countryside, food like vegetables
and fish is always fresh and cheaper than in the city. So people in
the countryside usually cook their meals.
In the countryside, there is a close community of neighbours
who are willing to help out in times of problems. City folks are not
friendly and they care only for themselves. They fear of losing their
privacy or being charged as invading others.
These are some reasons why I prefer country life. This kind
of 1healthy
lifestyle is good to be practiced by all.

The LRT or Light Rail Transit is a form of travel operating in Kuala Lumpur
and Petaling Jaya. From 2009 to 2012, travel by LRT has become more
popular. Over the years, the number of commuters have increased threefold
from 350 000 to slightly more than a million.
There are several reasons for this increase. One of the reasons is the
increasein the price of petrol and parking fees in Kuala Lumpur.
Commuters find it cheaper to travel by LRT compared to driving their own
cars. The LRT is comfortable and convenient especially after feeder buses
were introduced to take them to and from residential areas to the station
and vice versa. The trips are regular and punctual. There are special
packages for senior citizens. They are given 50% discount on the fare.

Students and regular commuters can buy monthly cards and they enjoy a
35% discount on the fare.
People who take the LRT are office workers who find it convenient and less
stressful. Housewives, students and senior citizens are the other categories
or users.

Hari Raya Puasa / Hari Raya Aidil Aidilfitri
The most significant celebration for Muslims, Eid al Fitr, it signifies the end of the
fasting month of Ramadan. Known locally as Hari Raya Puasa or Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, the
celebration is determined by sighting of the new moon on the day, before the next month on
the Muslim calendar, Syawal. The words Hari Raya means 'day of celebration.'
This year, a week before Hari Raya we cleaned and decorated our house. My, mum
and sister prepared plenty of traditional Malay delicacies and cookies. My family and I
started the day by wearing new clothes and congregating in the mosques early in the
morning to perform Hari Raya Puasa prayers followed by visiting the graves of my uncle and
grandfather. My siblings and I asked for forgiveness from my parents.
We had open house for our relatives and friends to come to our house. We served
our special guests with delicious food like ketupat, beef rendang, lemang, chocolate and
layered cakes and hari raya cookies such as pineapple tarts. My parents also gave packets
of money to kids when they came visiting. Children often look forward to getting these
money tokens on Hari Raya Puasa. Overall, Hari Raya Puasa is a joyous occasion for
Muslims.

Deepavali ~
Festival Date - 13 OCT 2012
Deepavali is also known as Diwali, or the Festival of Lights. Light is significant in

Hinduism because it signifies goodness. So, during the Festival of Lights, 'deeps',
or oil lamps, are burned throughout the day and into the night to ward off
darkness and evil.

Diwali is celebrated on the last day of the last month of lunar calendar.
There are various alleged origins attributed to this festival. Some hold that they celebrate
the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the worship
of Kali. It also commemorates that blessed day on which the triumphant Lord Rama
returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day also Sri Krishna killed the demon
Narakasura.
In Malaysia, it is celebrated as the day the evil Narakasura was slain by Lord Krishna. The
triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The mood starts a month beforehand
with the preparation of the various array of Indian cookies such as murukku, ommapadi,
chippi, atharasum, nei orundei and the wall breaker kallu orundei. Of course, there is the
inevitable shopping and work to be done that requires everything to be new and clean, from
curtains to clothes for family members. Normally on Deepavali eve, Padayai or offerings and
prayers are made to ancestors and deceased family members. After this ceremony, the
women are busy in the kitchen while the rest of the family do the house by hanging new
curtains, placing new settee covers and the like to welcome Laxmi, the goddess of
prosperity.
Getting up early before sunrise, oil is applied on heads and a bath is taken. This ritual oil
bath is known as "ganga-snanam" and is done to cleanse one of the impurities of the past
year. Prayers are held at the family altar, after which the family gathers before the elders to
receive their blessings. Then the guests come by and food cooked is prepared "halal" or
kosher so as to be served to Malay Muslims. Here again, the concept of open house is seen
and an intermingling of friends of different races come by to greet a Happy Deepavali. It
also is a great opportunity to dig in on some delicious Indian curry and cookies.
Most Malaysian Indians are South Indian Hindus in origin. Here, even though Deepavali is
known as the festival of lights, there are no oil lamps being lit. Rather it is usually done on
another religious festival called Karthika Villaku
which comes about a month later.
The most happiest celebrants are, of course, the children who collect gleefully the yellow
packets with money in them - an adaptation of the Chinese red ang pow packets. celebrants
try to squeeze the the month-long festivities into one day of public holiday and four to five
days of leave from work.

On the way there, I bought a burger. When I reached the basketball court, I was

before my eyes!
Luckily, two men came and grabbed hold of the boys till the boys calmed
down. Then I suggested that we went to the coffee shop for a drink. At the
coffee shop, I brought out my burger and it was good to see Tom and Jack
sharing the burger and laughing once again.
Reasons for choosing the ending
I choose the ending because the brothers usually care for each other and
always share everything that they have. When the narrator gave the burger to
one of them, he showed his caring attitude by sharing the burger with his
brother.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Eat vegetables raw as often as possible. This is because mineral salts and vitamins in raw
vegetables are not destroyed. But if you prefer to cook your vegetables, steaming is good way. If you

fry the vegetables, try to use olive oil as it contains less fat.
When you cook vegetables, do it with as little water as possible. Water dissolves the vitamins
and mineral salts. Do not peel the skin of vegetables such as potatoes, turnips and carrots. The skin
helps keep the vitamins from dissolving in the water.
Cut the vegetables into small pieces. Bigger pieces require more time for cooking thus
destroying the vitamins by heat.
Try to eat the vegetables as soon as they are cooked. Leftovers should be wrapped in
aluminium foil or a sheet of plastic and kept in a refrigerator.
