PROF. ED 3: THEORIES OF LEARNING
Learning Diary No. 4

Last session, Ms. Jackielyn Zapata discussed to us about Social Learning

Theory where she emphasized that this is the combination of Behaviorism and
Cognitive factors. She stressed the importance of observing and modeling
behavior, attitudes and emotional reactions of others. This means that this theory
focuses on the social context which means that people learn or observing from one
another.
She also introduced to us Albert Bandura. The father of Social Learning
Theory. She mentioned his background or his biography which comprises the date
he is born and what he do. She also discussed the ideas in Social Learning Theory
which scopes the reciprocal causation and personal agency where it emphasizes the
response-reinforcement contingencies. It also scopes the expectations and selfefficacy, in which people set high goals for them to exert more effort in facing those
obstacles and achieve high levels. It also comprises the Modeling where in people
learn through observing others. This may be a live model or an actual person they
are imitating or symbolic model or a person or character that is portrayed in a
medium. The ideas of this theory includes the aggression which resulted from the
several negative of an individual his/her surroundings. It consist also the selfregulation where in people reflect or observe what will happen to themselves and
cultivate reflection if the action that they will do is right or wrong. Lastly, she also
enumerated the social learning theories which are social cognitive theory, socialcultural theory, social-critical theory, cooperative learning approaches and
transformation theory.
At the end of the report, I learned that this theory underlined that people
learn through watching other people and perform the behavior. It sort of imitating
other peoples behavior. This explains that children learn through modeling or
watching behavior of other people around them and imitate the behavior they have.
This called other people could be a live model, which is an actual person
performing a behavior and a symbolic model which either real or fictional character
demonstrating a behavior via media. However, it could also alarming if a child
watches other people that perform inappropriate behavior such as stealing, lying
and etc. It might resulted for them to imitate the behavior that others have. As a
future teacher, its our job to guide the students in doing things and make them
understand of what is right or wrong. This is not only applicable to the teachers but
also to the parents. Its their job to introduce their job of what are right or wrong
actions and help them understand that not all other people behavior they
demonstrated is appropriate or correct otherwise the child might outgrow and
habited those behaviours.
