Squeaky Sneaks and Comic Book Fish:

Mike Johnston Makes Waves in Kuwait
Zehra Habib

Mike Johnston, a tall, clear-eyed Texan, pulls a brown paper sketchbook out of the messenger bag
he designed himself, with cartoon goldfish splashing across the front flap. This sketchbook is his
repository of “presketches,” artistic prototypes that eventually take life in larger pieces of art.
As I thumb through the book, I see contour drawings in red and black ink, directions to places in
Kuwait scrawled in the corners, magazine collages, hand-drawn barcodes, and cheeky comic book-
inspired faces leering up at me. A tsunami threatens to crash against the journal’s edge, as if it
were the shore. With only a touch of color, static sketches suddenly have come alive.

Yves asked my approval before asking me personal

seriously about myself, and to take time out of each day for my

At the spa, an assistant who knew me by name was waiting for

Chocolateness:
The First Word in Fine Chocolate
Zehra Habib

Chocolateness’s slogan, “when deliciousness speaks chocolate,”

barely describes the sinful goodness of a chocolate molten cake.
A dozen chocolate cakes in tinfoil cups drowned in hot chocolate
sauce came to our office, packed like a wedding photo album or
a new dress shirt, inviting celebration and the chance to lick a
spoon clean.
Two years ago, four family members (Abdulwahab Al-Homaizi,
Jassim Al-Homaizi, Rakan Al-Fadallah, and Abdullatif Al-Homaizi)
took their chocolate and caramel molten cakes and chocolate
shots to exhibitions, where they received an excellent customer
response. Their philosophy is to provide a no-frills, elegant
dessert made with high quality and flavor. The result is a creation
that needs no embellishment--the taste says it all. “Everybody
in Kuwait loves chocolate,” Abdulwahab says. “We knew we had

Arefeh Mansouri
A World of Fashion
Fashion design has taken Arefeh Mansouri around the world. Her journey into fashion design began in
Tehran, where her talent for oil painting as a teenager developed into a strong skill for combining color
with texture. Later, Mansouri majored in Fashion Design at LaSalle College in Montréal, Canada. Shortly
thereafter, her first line of women’s sportwear premiered in one of Montréal’s finest shops. An invitation
from an Italian fashion company landed her the role of head designer, where she worked closely with
a former Versace patternmaker. Currently, Mansouri designs evening and bridal wear in Miami, Florida,
creating one-of-a-kind pieces that are as beautiful and elegant as the women who wear them.

Physical Therapy, a “rare profession,”
is a growing field of study in Kuwait.
This year, a record number of students--

HEALTH
Common Menstrual Disorders
Dr. Nazia Nausheen

For the last couple of years, I have encountered many women in

Kuwait with health issues. Women’s health is important but most of us
neglect ourselves. Either we put our families first, or we are too busy to
take of our health. Some women neglect themselves to the point that
minor issues turn into major problems. For example, breast cancer,
if detected early, can offer high chances of a full recovery. Similarly,
women often fail to give importance to several problems, which I
will discuss one by one, but first let me explain some terminology
associated with gynaecology and obstetrics.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a branch of medicine that deals with
pregnancy, childbirth, and women’s health.

The Paradox that is

Jordan William Schuilenberg

A recent exploration of Jordan’s manifold mysteries created an invigorating holiday full of wonder. There is so much
diversity in the landscape, the people, and the history of Jordan. Amman, the capital, feels ambitious: everybody
seemed to be working, selling, serving, cooking, or growing something. Construction is everywhere, even sometimes
inside the boundaries of the many ancient archaeological sites. Church bells and prayer calls compete for the city’s
religious attention. The diversity of the citizens and tourists reduces the feeling of being in the minority and my wife
and I felt anonymous mingling with the crowds thronging the sidewalks.
Getting into the holiday groove with an afternoon
nap, we were awakened by the industrious
clamour of vendors setting up a giant outdoor
market in the parking lot outside our window.
Thousands and thousands of shoes, clothes,
and produce were being set on display for the
Saturday morning market. (None of the shoes
or clothes appeared to be new but I’m certain

the vegetables were.) Then, it was all covered

over for the night. I suspected we would not
need a wakeup call. Before sunrise, even more
vendors arrived with special goods, such as
children’s toys, and tools or hardware for the
men to investigate while their wives cruised for
the family’s wardrobe. The cacophony of the
various vendors extolling their wares and the
“cheap prices” was deafening. The sound of

Being in Jordan feels like walking through a

uses to get their bearings are in motion.

VEER
Veer written by Salman Khan, is a complete entertainment flick. It was
a beautiful historical blend of love and war. Salman Khan is creating
miracles with his performance and even Mithun Da's acting cannot be
left unacknowledged.
They have carried the interest of the viewers in a very tactful way by
showing various twists and turns. This Anil Sharma film looked very
expensive and royal. This movie will remind you of the old Bollywood
films as the story has an old traditional kind of flow.
It starts with a war between a tribal community named Pinadari and Mithun
and the Madhavgarh people who work for the Britishers. Prithvi (Mithun
Chakraborty) from Pinadari community cuts the king of Madhavgarh's
(Jackie Shroff) hand during a war for their motherland.

Umm Ali

Umm Ali dates back to Ottoman-era Egypt, when legend has it the sultan stopped in a poor village looking for

Kuwait Shell Hosts Environmental Awareness Workshops

for 300 Students at the New English School:
The 3R “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” educational workshop program raised environmental awareness
Kuwait, 26 January 2010: Kuwait Shell recently held 3R “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” workshops at the New English School
(NES). The workshops were delivered over a one-week period, in collaboration with Mad Science, an independent science
enrichment provider that delivers hands-on educational science experiences for children. The 3R workshops served as a
platform for over 300 elementary students to help them explore the concept of environment and realize that they can make
a difference if they implement the 3R principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling a wide range of materials.
Mr. Alastair Hannay, NES’s junior department head teacher, said, “The 3R workshops taught the students the importance
of recycling and waste management programs, and allowed them to directly experience how waste affects and pollutes the
environment in the long run. This is a wonderful teaching initiative and we can’t thank Kuwait Shell enough for sharing it
with us. We incorporate a longstanding focus on the environment as part of the curriculum at NES and this was a new and
engaging way of looking at the subject.”
The 3R workshops began with a brief introduction to the oil and gas industry. Hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations
illustrated the role students can take in improving not only their school environment, but also the environment in Kuwait.
Kuwait Shell Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Mouti, concluded, “The underlying principles of our 3R ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’
workshops are in line with what we are trying to do here in Kuwait--make the best of our natural resources in order to
minimize waste and reduce a negative impact on the environment. Each of us has a role and Kuwait Shell is committed to
educating as many children as possible about environmental preservation.”

February Planet Overview

It's full speed ahead during this short month strewn with days of both challenge and opportunity. Brush aside the residue from the second bout between Saturn and Pluto and the ongoing personal war they are waging, a fight to the
finish between tradition and transformation. Help arrives on February 6 when Jupiter sextiles Pluto, bringing new opportunities and creative change to your immediate surroundings. The assertive Mars, though retrograde, continues to
flex his muscle by creating delays or a driving-with-the-brakes-on atmosphere. An Aquarian New Moon, with the strong flavor of innovation, holds the promise of relieving an immediate problem. The Full Moon on February 28 ends the
