[ MOCK INTERVIEW ]

Degree: Passport to
Rejection!
Sanjay Kumar is of average height,
wheatish complexion, slightly balding. He is
only in his late twenties. He has shifting eyes
which shows he has a quicksand mind. He darts
from one female to another as we watch him
waiting for his turn at interview venue. He has
a Masters degree in Mass Communication and
is an aspirant for the post of lecturer in a prestigious university.
While waiting for his
turn, sitting in the antechamber of the ViceChancellors office, he
drifts from one candidate
to
another,
mostly
females. His behaviour
reveals two things: he is
unsure of himself, and
that he is a philanderer.
Even at this crucial movement of his career, he is
trying to net a fish!
The PA of the VC calls
him. He enters the room.
No one pays him any particular attention. This
upsets the candidate. And he asks, Sir, may I
take a seat?
The VC signals with his hand and he
slouches in the chair. The VC looks at the senior
journalist (editor) to begin the questioning.
SJ: Mr Sanjay which newspaper do you
read?
The candidate, knowing that this editor is
from Statesman, says: The Statesman, sir.
The editor smiles. And then asks: What is
JS?
The candidate is foxed. He looks here,

there, and then at his shoes!

The editor rubs in: Mr Sanjay, it is a magazine from the Statesman House! JS stands for
Junior Statesman.
The candidate flashes a sheepish smile and
lowers his head!
SJ: Mr Sanjay do you have anything published?
C: No Sir.
SJ: Have you ever
tried your hand at writing?
C: No Sir.
Member of the Committee: Mr Sanjay, what
is the difference between
mass communication and
mass media?
The candidate mumbles something which is
unintelligible.
MC: What is your
area of specialisation.
C: Mass media.
Everybody laughs!
Another Member:
Mr Sanjay what is the difference between radio
and television?
C: Sir, both are mass media.
M: What is the difference, if any.
The candidate once again sheepishly
smiles!
Another Member: Mr Sanjay, say something about Walter Lippmann.
C: He is a big name in American journalism.
M: Name the book that made him famous.
C: I do not remember, Sir.

[ MOCK INTERVIEW ]
M: What are his famous views on
news?
C: Beg your pardon, Sir?
M: Okay. Tell us something about his theory about public opinion.
Candidate gives a blank look.
M: You have a Masters Degree in
Mass Communication. But what is the area
of your specialisation? What will you teach,
here?
C: I can teach any subject.
M: Can you teach article and feature writing?
C: Yes Sir.
M: What is the difference between article
and feature?

Candidate looks at his shoes!

S: Mr Vice-Chancellor, do you have anything to say about this candidate?
VC: I leave to you.
Appraisal: The candidate is an inflatable
balloon ignorant and out of pace with modern
trends. His answers to questions put to him
show that he is a class-room parrot. He know
nothing about the subject.
He is a typical example of university
departments and coaching centres churning
out
specialists
who
are
ignorant
(read innocent) of any fact of mass media.
Their only qualification is a degree! He is
rejected.
