METTAWEE RIVER THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES

TOUR DATES FOR OUT OF THE PAST: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE METTAWEE JOURNEY Performances will take place at outdoor venues in upstate New York and
nearby Vermont and Massachusetts, and are scheduled from July
9 through July 21 (schedule attached). The production will include scenes and songs from four decades of Mettawee productions. There will be appearances by Aristophanes gluttonous dung
beetle, as well as Brechts forlorn lovers in THE CAUCASIAN
CHALK CIRCLE . The world will be created on the back of a
turtle; the great Irish sea god Mannanon will declaim the tragic tale
of Phaedra; and Grandmother Earth will send Nanabozho off to
get the world ready for humans, Archy the cockroach and his lowly
associates will share memorable moments from their illustrious
careers, and two long lost brothers will be reunited in VALENTYNE
AND ORSON . All these encounters will incorporate an abundance of Mettawees signature masks, puppets and giant figures.
According to Mettawee Artistic Director Ralph Lee, These headstrong characters have been clamoring to be let out of their boxes
for another fling in front of their fans, so I finally decided to let

A RALLY FOR THE CURE EVENT
July 18, 2015 Cronins Golf Resort is celebrating Rally for the Cures 20th Anniversary with a special womens only golf event on July 18, 2015. Rally has been a
valued partner of Susan G. KomenTM since 1996. Its volunteer organized golf, tennis and social events work to educate women about breast cancer and remind them
to get their annual screening. Since 1996, Rally events have engaged over 2.5
million people in the fight against breast cancer, generating more than $77 million
through fundraising activities for Susan G. Komen.
We are so grateful for Rallys 20 years of support, says Nancy G. Brinker, Founder
and Chair, Global Strategy Susan G. Komen, This partnership, all the volunteers
who have hosted events, and the millions of people who have been Rally participants, have been instrumental in our mission to end breast cancer forever.
Cronins Golf Resort has 128 participants annually registered for the Rally event
and this is their 20th Anniversary Rally as well. The days activities will consist of
light breakfast, 18 hole golf tournament, dinner, silent auction, and much more.
Prizes will be awarded to the 1st 5th place teams, of the event and each participant will receive a goody bag with important breast health information, a special
20th Anniversary Rally pin and a subscription to a select Cond Nast magazine
such as SELF, Golf Digest and Bon Apptit.

ARTISTS REFLECT ON METHODS AND INSPIRATION- Open Studio of Washington
County's fifth biennial, self-guided tour of 16 of the countys most exceptional artists studios will be
held Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. In the popular admission-free event, scheduled for 10
a.m. 6 p.m. both days, professional artists scattered throughout the county invite the public into their
studios, display their works and chat with their visitors. Participants drive from studio to studio, enjoying the scenery rolling hills, pastoral settings and beautiful family farms reminiscent of Tuscany
and the unique opportunity to meet working artists in their studios. Each studio stop offers an opportunity to see the artists' process, their inspiration, their technique, said Sue Sanderson, Open Studio's
Executive Director. If you've ever wondered why a piece of art a painting, a sculpture, a photograph grabs your attention, our tour is your chance to see wonderful works of art and actually

COURTHOUSE TO HOST WASHINGTON COUNTY BAND
CONCERT on Friday, July 17 at 7 pm, the Salem Courthouse Community
Center will host the Washington County Band (WCB) in the courtroom. This
event will be the annual benefit concert in memory of their long-time band member,
Dick Campbell. Active for over 30 years, the band is composed of talented
musicians from not only Washington County, but Warren, Rensselaer, and Saratoga
counties and many parts of Vermont as well. The band is currently under the
direction of Geoffrey Gee. The WCB has a varied repertoire consisting of
marches, show tunes, ballads and big band medleys. All volunteers, the band
comes together for practice weekly from April through August. It averages
eight concerts at different locations each season and has become a
perennial favorite with many dedicated fans.

WRITERS WORKSHOP- Opera Saratoga, in partnership with
the literary organization Words After War, will present a writing
workshop to civilians, veterans and military families on July 11
and July 12, 2015 at The New York State Military Museum in
Saratoga Springs, NY. The two-day event will be held in conjunction with the world premiere of The Long Walk, by Composer Jeremy Howard Beck and Librettist Stephanie Fleischmann. The opera is based upon the critically acclaimed memoir of war and homecoming by Brian Castner. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? All civilians, veterans, military spouses, gold star children, as well as those
currently serving on active, reserve or guard duty are eligible to
participate. HOW DO I APPLY? Those wishing to apply should
provide two pieces of fiction, nonfiction or memoir (no more than
10,000 words total) that they wish to workshop as part of the class,
as well as a short statement of purpose (no more than 250 words),
explaining who they are and why they wish to participate. Deadline for applications is June 19, 2015. Space is limited to 16 students, who will be notified immediately if they have been accepted.
The workshop is provided at no cost to those selected. Applications should be submitted to: info@wordsafterwar.org. Workshop
participants will be expected to submit their work for feedback,
and to spend time outside of class closely reading their colleagues'

GENEALOGY AND LOCAL HISTORY: Heritage Hunters of
Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, July 18th, at 1pm at the
Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in
Schuylerville. Susan Voso Lab, costume and textile historian, will
help date mystery photos in family history collections by analyzing the clothing worn in the pictures. Susan was associate professor in the School of Art at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
She is an expert on the identification and preservation of clothing
and has taught courses on the management of museum collections.
Those attending should bring photos an hour before the start of the

AL FRESCO A FABULOUS DINNER UNDER THE

STARS. On Saturday, July 25, Salem Courthouse Community
Center celebrates its 13th Al Fresco Dinner. This popular event is a
quality experience that comes together as a result of a dedicated
broad community effort. Each July, people from near and far gather
to celebrate all the good this rich agrarian region has to offer. At 5
pm, folks start to assemble on the side lawn surrounded by majestic
hills and verdant countryside. Crisp white tents radiate from the
historic old building like spokes protecting linen-covered tables lush
with local flowers and charmingly mismatched china. While sipping
wine and reaching out to friends, guests enjoy a sumptuous selection
of local artisan cheeses. Widely known creameries including 3 Corner
Field Farm, Argyle Cheese Farmer, Consider Bardwell Farm, Cabot,
Longview Farm and Sweet Spring Farm provide the assorted cheeses
for which this event has become synonymous. Cheeses made from
cow, sheep and goats milk are offered on 3 large tables enhanced
by glorious large-scale floral arrangements. The popular Roadhouse
Rhythm and Blues Band will lure dancers to their feet with their
horn-driven sound. Graceful large-scale sculpture on loan from
artists at Salem Art Works provides points of interest on the side
lawn. This years Great Hall exhibit will focus on the Civil War in
keeping with the many events commemorating the 150th anniversary
of the end of the war. A highlight of the evening is the annual
procession of the Mettawee River Theater Company, charming
guests with their whimsical creatures large and small. Throughout
the evening, guests have the opportunity to bid on an amazing
assortment of goods and services on display in our Youth Center/
Activity Barn. Artwork, jewelry, Telescope outdoor furniture and
restaurant gift certificates are but a few of the 100 plus items
available. The Al Fresco Dinner has evolved into the most important
fundraising event for the Courthouse each year. Over 200 volunteers
donate their time and energy to make it happen! Please consider
joining us in July to experience this wonderful celebration of good
food and community yourself. The $60 tickets will go on sale Monday,
June 1 at 9 am. Be sure to purchase your tickets early to ensure

UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

A few weeks ago Bernard Sanders declared his bid for the
Presidency of the United States. He is an avowed socialist,
which makes all his policies totally wrong for the United States.
(However, I do give him credit for being honest about his political
standings, as opposed to those socialists who are running who
are not AS open about their socialist leanings.)
Mr Sanders announcement speech pretty well summed up
his philosophy for life. He was, supposedly, raised in poverty,
which has made him extremely jealous of those people who
have achieved something and attained a high standard of living.
His stated goal is to take from the rich and give to the poor. In
other words, if you have worked hard all your life and made
good choices so as to attain that higher standard of living, you
have a target on your back, at which Mr Sanders shoots his
taxing arrows, taking a good portion of your money to distribute
as he sees fit, usually to those who have made bad choices, are
lazy, slovenly or just dont give a damn. That dont give a
damn attitude will prevail as long as socialists like Mr Sanders
are around making promises that they (the slovenly) will be
taken care of, cradle to grave.
In my opinion, Mr Sanders jealousy of the rich not only
stems from his poverty years, but from a lack of ability to
make an honest living. His path to success has been in the
political arena where you simply need a gift of gab and great
chutzpah. Mr Sanders certainly has that chutzpah. His hatred
of those who have achieved leads him to want to take the rich
down a peg or two. The problem this country now has is that
there are a lot of other people who harbor those same feelings.
Mr Sanders taps into those feelings in order to gain power for
himself. In the process, he, and his like minded, power hungry
socialists cater to those who have their hands out to receive
what Mr Sanders and his ilk declare to be entitlements. This, in
my mind, makes Mr Sanders a dangerous man, because there
are now so many with their hands stretched out in hopes of
getting their fair share.
The problem is, government does not generate income. Yes,
they print the money, but they do not generate income;
businesses do. So, when Mr Sanders talks about taking from
one sector and giving to another, the money has to come from
the income generators and/or income receivers.
Rather than encouraging hard work and effort, his plans reward
the untoward. He can only keep his promises by taking the
fruits of the efforts of the productive.
Mr Sanders is good at word play. He plays on the frustrations
that most people have and makes them promises to make
everything better, in the hopes of garnering votes. Many will
respond to the word play and vote for Mr Sanders. Those
votes then will empower him and embolden his plans of taking
from the rich and giving to the poor. This plan for improving
the lot of the American people does not create jobs, encourage
investment, encourage entrepreneurship, nor establish thriving
communities. Most of the people who get rich in socialist
societies are the ruling class and their friends. That is Mr Sanders
goal, to become a part of the ruling class. He doesnt really care
about anyone except Mr Sanders. A vote for Mr Sanders will
be just that, a vote for Mr Sanders, not for you nor for your
country.
An example of bad policy is the doubling of the minimum
wage. Small and incremental raises do not shock the system,
but large jumps are not wise. Going from $7.25 per hour to $15
per hour for example: a single person earns $290 for a 40 hour
week at the $7.25 rate. Mandated deductions are FICA of
$22.19, Fed Withholding of $17, State witholding of $5.40, he/
she nets $245.41. At $15 per hour he/she grosses $600 for a 40
hour week, less FICA of $45.90. Fed witholding of $62 and
State witholding of $22.20, resulting in take home of $469.30.
That sounds pretty good. But, what it really is doing is taking
from the entrepreneurs and higher wage earners and giving to
those of lesser income AND THE GOVERNMENT. You see
what has happened, the government has now taken for its use
(in the case of FICA) or forever, (in the case of income tax
witholding), an additional $110.62 (including the employers
portion of FICA). The so-called wage increase is simply a tax
increase in the guise of helping the poor.
The real problem comes when you consider what the employer
has to do to pay the extra sums. Lets say the employer has ten
employees, now all making $600 per week when they use to
make $290 per week. The employer now has additional wage
costs of $3124 per week. Where does that come from? It could
come from his/her pocket, thus discouraging continuing to do
or grow the business. Or, he/she could raise prices on their
product or services. Since the average wage bill for an employer
is approximately 30% of expenses, he/she will need to raise
their costs to consumers by a sufficient percentage to cover the
increased costs. When every employer raises their prices, the
employees who just got the wage increase are now paying
more for goods and services, thus reducing their effective
purchasing power. Another thing that could happen is that the
employer will lay off employees in sufficient numbers to equal
the increased costs of $3124. This means that approximately 5
employees could lose their jobs, leaving 5 to carry the load.
The company will most likely do a combination of all three
choices, whereby only 2 people (20%) lose their jobs.
Bingo...jobless rate shoots up, economy suffers, Mr Sanders is
in the ruling class. If we elect Mr Sanders and like-minded
socialists, we will soon be in the same position as Greece. I
wonder how we will react to that.

NEW YORKS WASHINGTON COUNTY DISPLAYS NATURAL AND CRAFTED BEAUTY DURING UPCOMING ARTISTS OPEN STUDIO TOUR, JULY 18 AND 19
Open Studio of Washington County has announced that its fifth biennial,
self-guided tour of 16 of the countys most exceptional artists studios
will be held Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. In the popular
admission-free event, scheduled for 10 a.m. 6 p.m. both days, professional artists scattered throughout the county invite the public into their
studios, display their works and chat with their visitors. Participants drive
from studio to studio, enjoying the scenery rolling hills, pastoral settings and beautiful family farms reminiscent of Tuscany and the unique
opportunity to meet working artists in their studios.
The 2015 Washington County Open Studio Tour will feature a wide
range of works including photography, drawings, works in oils, pastels
and watercolors, decorative and functional decoy carving, ceramic sculpture, assemblage, collage, encaustic and breathtaking sculpture: a wealth
of artistic expressions for visitors to experience and take home with
them. Works from these artists hang in galleries, private collections and
museums.
This years tour offers the widest range of fine artist renderings and
experiences for visitors as well as a trip through the beauty of Washington Countya must-do for everyone who wants to peek behind the
curtain of creativity, said Sue Sanderson, Open Studio's Executive Director.
Eight new artists will join eight returning artists. The newcomers work
in a variety of media: Ian Creitz, photographer, Cambridge; Leslie Ferst,
sculptor in clay, Cambridge; Ann Fitzgibbons, landscapes and iconography in oil, Easton; Karen Koziol, assemblage, collage and encaustic,
Greenwich; Jeri Macdonald, oil, watercolor, ceramic, Cambridge; Leah
McCloskey, oil, watercolor and acrylic, Salem; Steve Sanford, woodcarving, South Cambridge; and Don Wynn, oil painting, watercolors and
woodcuts, Cambridge.
Artists returning from 2013 include: Clarence King, painting, Buskirk;
Stephen Lack, painting, drawing and sculpture, Salem; Virginia McNeice,
pastel and oil, Greenwich; Will Moses, painting, Eagle Bridge; Leslie
Peck, oil on panel and canvas, Greenwich; Gyula Varosy, wood, metal
and stone, Greenwich; Hannie Varosy, oil on canvas, acrylic on board
and wooden sculptures, Greenwich; and Regina Wickham, ceramic,

2015 HUBBARDTON DAYS. Following a very successful and exciting, fun filled Hubbardton 250th Birthday celebration last year, the
town of Hubbardton has decided it would like to have an annual
Hubbardton Days celebration.
So, the town has set the day this year for Saturday, July 18th, starting
at 4:00 pm, to have the 1st annual Hubbardton Days celebration. It will
be held at the Hubbardton Battlefield, located on Monument Hill Road
in Hubbardton. Please remember to bring lawn chairs or blankets for
your convenience. In the event of rain, the celebration will be held the
next day, Sunday, July 19th same place and time. There are activities
scheduled for both children and adults. Childrens games and contests
will begin at 4:00 pm and there will be prizes and surprises given out.
At the same time, for the adults, there will be a horseshoe throwing
contest and also, the extremely popular women only frying pan
throwing contest! This event was held last year and drew 23 competitors and is bound to again, draw a lot of attention.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the adult contests.
During the day, there will be fried bread dough, ice cream, hamburgers
and hot dogs available to purchase. Other events will be a raffle with
ca$h prizes, music, visit with alpacas, and a 50 - 50 drawing. Also, the
fun and exciting face painting lady, will once again work her magic
with her amazing creative art!!

SAVE VAN NEEDS DRIVERS: One of the finest initiatives offered by the Salem Courthouse
Community Center is the transportation opportunity provided by the SAVE (Salem Area Van Endeavor)
van. The van makes runs to area grocery stores twice a week: Hannaford on Tuesday morning and
Price Chopper on Thursday morning. The first Monday of each month, the van travels to Walmart
to provide passengers additional shopping opportunities. This service is open to anyone in the Salem
area with transportation needs and is offered at no charge. Many area senior citizens have come to
depend on this service. No special drivers license is required but a clean driving record is. The van
drivers insurance is provided by SAVE. Anyone wishing to volunteer some time to support this
