The term “veteran” applies to
5,909 people in Wise County.
Their ages range from the 20s
to the 90s. Their experiences vary
– some fought in the jungles,
others the desert, while others
spent their time on a destroyer
on the sea.
Their wounds are physical,
mental and emotional, but each
has healed differently.
They came to military service
for different reasons. Some were
called by the government, while
others volunteered.
Regardless of their differences,
these veterans share a bond that
comes with volunteering time,
and potentially life, for their
country.
Following are the collective
stories of several Wise County
veterans, a wife and a widow.
Through their voices, we see
not only the similarities and
differences, but also the spirit
that forever joins military men
and women and their families.

WHAT EPILEPSY MEANS
FOR YOUR CHILD
Though many parents are frightened
when their child is diagnosed with
epilepsy, the condition is largely
controllable with medication, and
most patients go on to live normal
lives. Epilepsy, sometimes called
seizure disorder, is a condition that
affects the nervous system. What
happens inside a child’s head to
cause a seizure? The brain operates
on electrical impulses. If part of the
brain sends out an abnormally large
charge, the brain is overwhelmed
and a seizure occurs. A person
who has had two or more seizures
is considered to have epilepsy. It’s
hard to miss a grand mal seizure,
but absence seizures, during
which a child simply appears to be
daydreaming, often go undiagnosed.
Children with epilepsy need prompt
and effective treatment. Speak with
a highly trained and compassionate
doctor at LOVETTE PEDIATRICS.
Healthy Futures Start Here. We
will work with you to help your child
stay healthy and achieve his or her
potential. Please call (940) 627-
8044 for an appointment. Our office
is located at 2401 S. FM 51, Suite
100, Decatur. For your convenience,
we’re open M -Th 8am to 5pm and
F 8am to noon. Our friendly staff
will always go the extra mile to make
our patient’s visit most comfortable.
HAVE A FUN & SAFE
SCHOOL YEAR!
P.S. Seizures can occur from
fever, dehydration, lack of oxgyen,
and head trauma. Bring any child
who has experienced a seizure
to the pediatrician promptly.

GARDENER’S MAILBAG
By NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: We have rented
our home, and the tenants
have not cared for the lawn at
all. It appears that all of the
grass in the front and back
yards is gone. (The trees are
still healthy.) How and when
can we get the lawn back on
track? We don’t mind putting
in a sprinkler system, but we
do not know when to aerate,
replant, etc.
Late spring (late April
through May) is the best time
to start new lawns if you’re
considering a warm-season
grass (bermuda, St. Augus-
tine, buffalograss or zoysia).
However, you can certainly
plant at other times – you just
have to be a little more atten-
tive to weather details. Start
by assessing the amount of
shade those trees have cast.
It may very well be that ex-
cessive shade, and not tenant
abuse, caused the loss of the
grass. That won’t be true, of
course, if you have any areas
in full sun that have also died
out. Put your sprinkler sys-
tem in first. Flag the heads
and valves, then rototill the
soil 3 or 4 inches deep and
rake to a smooth, well-drain-
ing surface. Then you’ll be
ready to seed or sod, depend-
ing on the type of grass you
choose. You can pick up those
details when you’re ready,
either online or from Texas-
based gardening books and
experts.

Dear Neil: We have long,
red worms all over our front
and back yards. What can we
spray on our yards to kill the
worms? It looks like crawdad
mounds out there.
Please don’t kill them.
Those are one or more species
of earthworms or nightcrawl-
ers, and they are very ben-
eficial. They work their way
through the soil, aerating
and enriching it in the pro-
cess. They commonly surface
when there are very high wa-
ter tables. They also come to
the surface to mate, and then
may become stranded on top
of hardpan soils. The mounds
you see are soil they have run
through their bodies. Those
are the earthworms’ “cast-
ings,” and they’re good for the
soil. They’ll crumble and work
their way back into the soil
over the next several weeks.

Dear Neil: How often
should we have our lawn aer-
ated and mulched?
Aeration involves remov-
ing small plugs, or cores, of
soil and sod in an effort to get
oxygen into the root zone. It’s
a critical process if there has
been heavy traffic over an
area, for example, in a yard
that’s used several times a
week for neighborhood foot-
ball games. It’s also the prime
means of breaking through
an impenetrable layer of ac-
cumulated thatch that has

Judges include Joan Jackson, Gerre
Joiner and Leesa Cravens Walker.
The audience is in for a rare treat dur-
ing the second half of the show when
Talmage Morrison and Glenn Walker
present a ukulele concert.
“Mr. Morrison has played ukulele for
many years and recently teamed up
with Decatur Music store owner Glenn
Walker to present his music in Wise
County to rave reviews. This is going to
be a lively, memorable second half,” said
Kerry Clower, president of the Wise
County Historical Society, sponsor of
the Fall-Out.
“Proceeds from the Fall-Out each
year go specifically for the care of the
Wise County Heritage Museum build-
ing. This year we are also encourag-
ing everyone who attends the show to
be extra generous and bring a canned
food item that night for WARM or to
make a cash donation at the concert for
WARM,” said Janell Cartwright, enter-
tainment committee chairman. “Each
can of food will get the donor one addi-
tional door prize ticket. A cash donation
will get the donor two additional door
prize tickets. We always have great
door prizes at the end of each show.
The Wise County Historical Society is
excited about helping WARM, stock its
pantry for the holidays.”
The December 2009 line-up at the
G. C. Rann Little Theater features two
plays – one by the First Baptist Church
of Decatur and one by Joy Christian
Academy. See “The Rented Christmas”
at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 and 4 or 2 p.m. Dec. 5,
presented by the First Baptist Church.

Wise Country Fall-Out is Saturday
WISE COUNTY
Hunters in Wise and sur-
rounding counties will need
to pay close attention to the
antler size of the deer before
shooting because Wise and
many other North Texas
counties have adopted an
antler restriction regula-
tion.
Based on harvest data
collected by Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department
(TPWD), over harvest of
younger age bucks in Wise
County has resulted in a
poor age structure. Research
has shown that an improper
age structure within a buck
herd creates a longer breed-
ing season, which leads to a
longer fawning season, and
a reduction in fawn produc-
tion. Poor age structure also
contributes to adverse hunt-
er satisfaction.
This regulation is being
implemented in an effort to
improve the age structure
of buck populations by re-
ducing the intense hunting
pressure on bucks, particu-
larly young bucks. Under
the new regulation, a lawful
buck in Wise County is de-
fined as any buck having at
least one unbranched antler
or an inside antler spread of
at least 13 inches. The buck
limit will now be two lawful
bucks, no more than one of
which may have an inside
spread of greater than 13
inches. The overall bag limit
will change from three deer
(no more than one buck, no
more than two antlerless) to
four deer (no more than two
bucks and no more than two
antlerless, all seasons com-
bined).
Antler restrictions have
been in place in some coun-
ties throughout the state
since the 2002 hunting sea-
son. Harvest data collected
by TPWD wildlife biologists
indicate the regulations
have been effective in im-
proving the age structure
of the buck herd, increasing
hunter opportunity and en-
couraging landowners and
hunters to become more
actively involved in better
habitat management. For
more information about this
regulation, go to the follow-
ing Web site: http://www.
tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/
wild/game_management/
deer/antler_restrictions/
In addition to trying to
improve the age structure
of the deer herd, TPWD is
creating additional hunting
opportunities by expand-
ing the special youth season
(antlerless and spikes only)
in Wise County from two
days to two weeks, which
will run from Jan. 4-17.

tions related to wildlife or

vices offered by the state,

On Feb. 18, 1996, Grace
Baptist Church of Deca-
tur was founded in a small
building at 303 South State
Street. The church immedi-
ately began a benevolence
effort called the “Others”
fund to assist people with
needs.
Before church services one
evening, a group of men put
their money together and
bought a smoker to cook
meat for special occasions.
In November 1996, that
smoker was used to smoke
turkeys and hams just be-
fore Thanksgiving, and the
meat was sold with the pro-
ceeds going to the “Others”
fund, and that started a tra-
dition.
The cookout has grown
to several smokers and a
Grace Baptist Cooking Team
that prepares the meat for
sale to the community on
the Friday evening before
Thanksgiving each year.
The “Others” fund has part-
nered with WARM and other
churches to meet the needs
of folks for these years. The
cookout takes place on the
Grace Baptist Church park-
ing lot at 600 South Trinity
St. in Decatur. This year the
cookout will be Friday, Nov.
20.
To purchase meats, call
Grace Baptist at (940) 627-
7558. Orders may be picked
up on the evening of Nov.
20. Smoked turkeys are $30,
smoked hams are $35 and
smoked briskets are $40.

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, November 12, 2009 5
Managing pain through labor and delivery is a personal decision
that should not be influenced by any misguided notion that either
accepting or declining pain relief medication is a preferred option.
Women should be aware of their options and discuss them with
their doctors. The decision to use IV narcotics, epidurals, spinal
blocks, a combination of both an epidural and a spinal block, or
general anesthesia is generally guided by a desire to make the
mother-to-be comfortable. There is no credible reason to believe
that any of the forms of pain management either speed or slow
labor or lead to cesarian sections. Neither do women have to wait
until they are dilated to a certain level to receive an epidural.
We are committed to helping women stay healthy and deliver
healthy babies. If you are expecting, or planning to have a baby,
our practice offers excellent, high quality care and many services
for the soon to be mom. For additional information about today’s
column, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at
940-626-8008. Our office is conveniently located at 1713 South
Fm 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.

P.S. The principal guidelines for epidural use are the request for
pain relief by the mother-to-be, her ability to remain still (while the
epidural is being administered), and that she is not in the end stage
of delivering her baby.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE
formed following years of
improper feeding and mow-
ing. You can aerate at any
season, but it’s often done
in mid-spring, as the grass
is starting to grow. Lawn
maintenance companies of-
ten do it in the fall, as they’re
over-seeding with winter rye.
However, aerating isn’t a
cure-all for lawns that have
suffered from drought, insuf-
ficient sunlight or extremely
poor nutrition. It is not a re-
quired process for good lawn
maintenance.

Dear Neil: We just moved
into a new house, and there is
a wild plum growing there. It
grows in two directions from
the base of the trunk. One half
is hollow, with a large ant
nest inside. The other side has
a couple of dead spots that
could easily be removed, but
it’s badly overgrown, with its
limbs hanging 15 or 20 feet
out. How and when can I re-
train it, or is it worth trying
to save?
The more details you gave,
the more obvious it became
that you simply need to start
a new plum tree. Select a va-
riety like Methley (self-polli-
nating, and a good pollinator
for other varieties as well),
Bruce or Ozark Premier. The
day that you plant your new
tree, cut it to 24 inches. As
new shoots start to grow, save
three or four that are between
20 and 24 inches from the
ground, and that are grow-
ing out in different directions
from the trunk. Your goal is
to maintain a mature plum
at 8 or 9 feet of height and in
bowl-shaped branching struc-
ture. It’s almost impossible to
retrofit an old, neglected tree
back into shape.

Dear Neil: After all this
rain, I still have large, round
spots of brown grass in my
back yard. No one has been
able to identify it for me. In
fact, they couldn’t even iden-
tify the grass. I’ve treated for
grubs and other insects, and
no one could find a fungus.
What can I do?
You absolutely must start
by determining what type of
grass you have. What affects
one type of turf rarely will af-
fect any other. Find a Texas
Master Certified Nursery
Professional. That man or
woman will have the correct
answers, as well as the prop-
er solutions to your problem.
Do ask about brown patch.
Your description certainly
fits, especially if you have St.
Augustine.

Equine piroplasmosis
disease investigation
continues
Canada and a number of
U.S. states have imposed
movement restrictions or ad-
ditional entry requirements for horses
from Texas after equine piroplasmo-
sis, a tick-transmitted blood disease
of equine animals, such as horses,
donkeys, mules and zebras, was de-
tected in South Texas in mid-October.
Equine piroplasmosis may be carried
and transmitted by as many as 15 spe-
cies of ticks. Although ticks have been
collected from the South Texas ranch
for testing, final results are not com-
plete, and it is not known whether any
of the ticks can serve as a host for the
disease.
“Before moving horses from Texas,
we urge you and your veterinarian to
check with animal health officials for
any state of destination, to ensure the
animals have met all entry require-
ments,” said Dr. Bob Hillman, Texas’
state veterinarian and head of the
Texas Animal Health Commission
(TAHC), the state’s livestock and poul-
try health regulatory agency.
Hillman urged equine owners and
veterinarians to call state animal
health officials directly before hauling,
as many states have not yet distrib-
uted entry requirement information.
Contact information for state vet-
erinarians may be obtained from the
TAHC at (800) 550-8242 ext. 710, or by

Wise County’s three new car dealers sold
183 new vehicles and 115 used vehicles dur-
ing September.
New car sales were down 43 units from
August.
Chevrolet continued to lead all brands,
with 22 Chevy cars and 48 Chevrolet trucks
sold by James Wood Motors. Wood’s Hyun-
dai dealership sold 16 cars and nine Hyun-
dai trucks during the month.
New vehicle sales were led by Wood with
149, Karl Klement Chrysler with 22 and
Karl Klement Ford with 12.
Wood sold 38 GMC trucks. Klement Dodge
sold 13 trucks and Klement Ford sold 10
Ford trucks.
GMAC led the lenders with 43 car loans,
followed by First State Bank, 30; DATCU
Credit Union, 13; and Ford Motor Credit, 7.
The remaining loans were divided among
North Texas Bank, Legend Bank, The Com-
munity Bank, First Financial Bank and
Woodhaven National Bank in Rhome.
The Texas seasonally ad-
justed unemployment rate
rose slightly to 8.2 percent in
September, up from 8.0 per-
cent a month ago, and contin-
ued to trend well below the
complete national rate of 9.8
percent.
The Texas Civilian Labor
Force continued to increase,
remaining above the mark
of 12 million workers for the
third consecutive month. To-
tal nonagricultural employ-
ment in Texas fell by 44,700
positions in September.
“The Texas job market
continued to tighten as most
industries experienced job
losses in September,” said
Texas Workforce Commis-
sion (TWC) Chairman Tom
Pauken. “While unemploy-
ment in Texas remains well
below the national rate of 9.8
percent, this serious national
recession continues to affect
us adversely in Texas.”
Other Services, which in-
clude automotive, electronic,
and commercial repair and
maintenance, had the largest
over-the-month gain adding
8,800 jobs.
A total of 9,400 jobs have
been added to the payrolls of
Other Services since Septem-
ber 2008.
Mining and Logging posted
a gain for the first time this
year, adding 2,100 jobs. Edu-
cation and Health Services
employment growth remained
positive in September with
the addition of 2,700 jobs. In-
formation employment grew
by 800 jobs last month.
“The Texas labor force is
growing as more people enter
the job market, but job seek-
ers are hampered by fewer
jobs,” said TWC Commis-
sioner Representing Labor
Ronny Congleton. “TWC and
our workforce boards located
around the state remain com-
mitted to helping out-of-work
Texans acquire skills and find
jobs.”
The largest job losses oc-
curred in the Leisure and
Hospitality industry which
was down 16,900 positions,
followed by Professional and
Business Services, down
16,500 jobs. Trade, Transpor-
tation and Utilities lost 13,000
positions in September.
“Job gains in Mining and
Logging, Education and
Health Services, and Other
Services were offset by losses
in most industries in Septem-
ber,” said TWC Commissioner
Representing the Public An-
dres Alcantar.
“To help connect workers
with available jobs, staff at
more than 240 workforce cen-
ters across the state is avail-
able to provide job-search as-
sistance and other services.”
