ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

An analysis on the school final semester examination results revealed that many Year Five/Six students in your class had difficulties understanding some important mathematical concepts. The following are the concepts that students found difficult to understand: • • • (a) Making estimations Dividing fractions with a whole number Converting 24-Hour System to 12-Hour System

Before remedial actions could be taken, you have decided to identify the various strategies students have used in making estimations. Provide sufficient problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to Year Five/Six students. Interview students or analyse students’ algorithm used in arriving at the estimation. Write a report on the various strategies used by students in making estimations. (10 Marks)

(b)

Prepare a lesson plan to teach “Dividing fractions with a whole number” and carry out the lesson. At the end of the lesson, identify students’ understanding of the skills. Write a reflection of the lesson that you have conducted. (10 Marks)

(c)

Prepare a suitable teaching aid to teach students how they can convert 24-Hour System into 12-Hour System. Get students to do the conversion using the teaching aid prepared. Evaluate the suitability of the teaching aid in enhancing students’ understanding of the concept. (10 Marks)

STUDENT GUIDES

(a)

You are advised to read strategies used for whole number computational estimation by Reys (1986). Using this as a guide, analyse students’ interview record or the algorithm to identify their strategies. Your report must include the various stragies used by students. Provide evidence from students’ work. Present your findings in an appropriate form.

(b)

Write a complete lesson plan to teach the skill “ Dividing fractions by a whole number”. Conduct the lesson with your students. Hand in both the lesson plan and the reflections written to your tutor. The reflection should be written in about 1-2 pages. It should include the strength of your lesson, areas of concern (or weaknesses) and students involvment.

(c)

It is advised that you prepare the actual teaching aids for converting the 24-Hour System into 12-Hour System. Hand in a photograph of the teaching aids prepared or you could also hand in the actual teaching aids to your tutor. In evaluating the suitability of the teaching aids, you could focus on whether students’ liked using the aids, the cost of preparing the aids, whether it helps students to understand the concept and other relevant aspects.

SOALAN TUGASAN

Analisis yang telah dibuat terhadap keputusan semester akhir peperiksaan sekolah menunjukkan bahawa ramai pelajar Tahun Lima/Enam masih menghadapi masalah memahami beberapa konsep penting dalam matematik. Antara konsep-konsep yang kurang difahami pelajar adalah seperti berikut: • • • (a) Membuat anggaran Membahagi pecahan dengan suatu nombor bulat Menukar Sistem 24-Jam kepada Sistem 12-Jam

Sebelum tindakan pemulihan dapat dilaksanakan, anda telah membuat keputusan untuk mengenalpasti strategi yang digunakan pelajar untuk membuat anggaran. Dengan menggunakan beberapa soalan yang cukup dalam operasi tambah, tolak, darab dan bahagi, kenal pasti strategi yang telah digunakan pelajar. Temuduga beberapa orang pelajar atau analisiskan algoritma yang diguna pelajar untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang diberikan. Tuliskan laporan yang merangkumi pelbagai strategi yang diguna pelajar dalam membuat anggaran. (10 Markah)

Sediakan satu rancangan mengajar untuk mengajar kemahiran “Membahagi pecahan dengan satu nombor bulat” Laksanakan pengajaran dengan menggunakan rancangan mengajar yang anda telah tuliskan. Pada akhir pengajaran itu, tentukan peringkat kefahaman pelajar. Tuliskan refleksi tentang pengajaran yang anda telah laksanakan. (10 Markah)

(c)

Sediakan satu alat bantu mengajar yang akan membolehkan pelajar menukar Sistem 24-Jam kepada Sistem 12-Jam. Dapatkan pelajar menggunakan alat bantu mengajar ini untuk melakukan penukaran sistem yang diperlukan. Taksirkan kesesuaian alat bantu mengajar dalam meningkatkan kefahaman pelajar dalam sistem penukaran jam. (10 Markah) [Jumlah: 30 markah]
