links to these guidelines will be provided. Relevant sections of this manual related to these key competencies are indicated in Appendix 1. e. Since completion design is a complex process. ERD.BP Exploration Section 1 – Introduction 1 INTRODUCTION 1. 1. Through self-assessment and then discussions with line managers and mentors. the manual has been built to allow access to the principal issues considered necessary for the majority of completion situations. The manual gives guidance to engineers working in any stage of the field development to apply BP’s best practices. The manual will not cover all completion design issues in detail nor will it deal with extreme wells.g. the manual has been built to give engineers an overview of particular issues and lead them to detailed guidance where it is available elsewhere.2 Completion Engineering Competencies BP has established a Competency Framework to allow engineers and managers to assess individual competencies. Where relevant. This can be accessed at the Competencies On Line web site at: http://competencies. Further supplementary guidance on these types of wells is accessible through the BP intranet. multi-laterals or HPHT. engineers can identify gaps in their competencies and establish a personal development programme to fill those gaps. In doing so the manual is aligned with the following three tools available to a well engineer undertaking completion design:    The Well Value Assurance (WVA) process Right Scoping Drilling and Completion competencies The WVA and Right Scoping tools are discussed in further detail in section 2.1 Objective Of The Manual The aim of this Completion Design manual is to provide access to the basics of design to an engineer who is new to all or some aspects of completion design. either within this document or through access to WVA. Page 1 .bp. Since much of BP’s best practice is now accessible through the web.bpweb. Competencies for completion engineers are embedded within the Drilling & Completions Competency Framework. It aims to capture the best practices of the heritage companies which make up the current BP.com This completion design manual (together with WVA) will support engineers wishing to improve their competencies by providing first level access to what BP knows and best practices in completion design. The actions required to fill these gaps include a mixture of on the job exposure and training.

3 BP HS&E Expectations And Commitments The overriding expectation within BP is that operations are delivered safely consistent with the ‘Brand’ and ‘What We Stand For’. In support of this WVA includes an element entitled ‘HSE’ which sets out some expectations for a wells team planning to install and operate a completion. BP’s ‘Getting HSE Right’ is applied to all aspects of a well’s life cycle. With regard to completion design a completion engineer must design to:     Maximise the safety of personnel installing and operating the well Minimise the potential for uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons Reduce the impact of BP’s operations on the environment Comply with global BP policies and local legislation This is generally a function of a BU’s assurance process. Furthermore BP’s aspiration of ‘No Accidents. Page 2 . No Harm to People and No Damage to the Environment’ is a fundamental aspect of how it does business. The optimisation and management of well design to ensure compliance with these aspirations requires a very thorough HSE. integrity and compliance process running throughout the well design process.BP Exploration Section 1 – Introduction 1. This manual is entirely aligned with these principals and goals.
