Vol. XXIV No. 31

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)

Humility and Goodness for God’s Greater Glory

J

esus gave His disciples the power and
authority to speak and to act in His name
in goodness and purity of heart. His
apostles were sent out to heal those who are
sick, speak of the Good News - with LOVE
and HUMILITY. He instructed them to use
their gifts and talents and to do their work
for the GOOD OF THE PEOPLE and for His
GREATER GLORY. He also instructed them
to TRAVEL LIGHT with little provision at all.
A lot of people hunger for power and
authority. Being in control helps them feed
their “egos”. They do their selfish desires,
manipulate and control people and place
others at their mercy. Power can make
life easier and convenient for them. As
Christians, is this the kind of ‘lifestyle’ that
Jesus wants us to live?
When God gives us power, He wants
us to use it wisely. Let us use the “power”
entrusted to us in doing something that
lasts and gives benefit to people. Let us use
God’s given power not to inflict
harm or create conflict in our
community. In spite of this power
and authority, let us remain
meek, humble and firmly rooted
on the ground. Let us not become
“airheads” who would speak of
“hallow” things. Let us not boast
of things we have not acquired
through our “sweat and blood”.
When we commit mistakes, let us
accept our faults and not act as
if we are so perfect. If we are in
authority, let us also respect the
rules, abide by it and learn where
our boundaries are. An example
of boundaries is to know when
to keep our mouth shut with
stories that are intended for the
“household” only.
When in power, intelligence
should be used wisely and
cautiously. A few think they are
brainy but their actions are of
the dumb and the stupid. Those
who have not finished a degree
would be more respected in
actions and in deeds compared
to these so called “brainy”. They
believe so much in themselves
that most of the time they would
argue with the teachings of those
in authority and change it to
their baseless understanding and

Joy H. Gefes

make themselves like fools.
God gives us talents to be used properly,
for the common good and for His greater
glory. When these God-given talents and
wisdom are not used properly, He takes it
away. Perhaps example would be a once
intelligent person becoming a mental
patient or some rich becoming poor because
of mismanagement of wealth.
With our power, let us work for the
common good of our community. Let us
become selfless and reach out with the
purity of hearts to those in need. Being in
power has also its challenges. When things
get tough, let us learn to listen to those
around us, ask and listen to advices of those
who mean well. Let us make decisions for the
benefit of the common good and not only for
personal good. Even with power we should
learn to “let go” of things that make our
living easy and embrace with enthusiasm
the challenges of life.

Jesus also told them to “travel light” or
with little provision, so that they will not be
dependent on material and earthly things
and that they would be able to see God’s
abundant provisions for them.
If we “travel light” in life we would be
able to see and appreciate God’s provision
for us. We would see God’s goodness and
learn to appreciate the simplicity of life
and the beauty of the things around us. If
we are too engrossed in acquiring material
possessions, we will become greedy and preoccupied on how to acquire more material
things, rather than work to be good so that
we can enter heaven. If we are engrossed
in earthly pleasures, we take for granted
that these things are blessings from God.
We have tendency to be desirous for more
things in life and we will never be contented
in our life.
“Traveling light” also means that we
must not be a burden to other people. We
must work hard so that we can
meet our daily and basic needs.
Being a parasite and begging
from other people for our daily
sustenance when we are still
strong and able is not a reason for
us to claim that we are financially
incapable and ask money from
other people who works hard to
earn for their families. Begging
when we are still able and
depending on others for our daily
needs is not a Christian way of
living, it is not how Christ would
want us to interpret His teachings
because it is the way of the fool
and the lazy. We should all learn
to be independent, doing work
that is lawful and honest and not
to be a burden to other people.
We cannot see God’s provision
if we do not know how to live
properly and honestly.
As we live our daily life, let
us spread Christ’s teachings in a
correct and proper manner. Let
us exercise our authority in the
Christian way and use it to do
good to our neighbors. Let us use
it to desire for the common good.
Let us remain humble at all times
and have our feet firmly flat on the
ground. Let us live simple lives,
always thankful of God’s blessings.

ANG SAKRAMENTO SANG PAG-ORDEN SA PARI

a sini nga isyu, akon naman ipaathag
iban kag sang Simbahan mismo; kag ginatawag
man ining duha nga Sakramento sang Pagalagad, nga nagatukod kag nagapabakod sa
Simbahan sa iya misyon.
Si Papa San Juan Pablo II, sa iya paghambal
nahanungod sa Pagkapari, nagsiling: “Ang
bokasyon sa Pagkapari isa ka panawagan
sa paghatag sang kaugalingon sa serbisyo
sang Banwa sang Dios, nga may pinasahi nga
Manugbantay sang Simbahan” (Pastores Dabo
Vobis, 35).

sa amo man nga sakripisyo nga padayon nga

Simbahan.
3. Ang pari isa ka ginatawag “presbitero”
ukon “tigulang/magulang”, sia nga amo ang
responsable sa pagtatap, bilang pastor, sang
mga kinahanglanon sang mga katapo sang
Simbahan. Bilang gintugyanan sang Dios,
ang pari dapat mangin “indi salawayon,
indi matinaastaason, indi palahubog ukon
mapintas, indi mahakog. Sa baylo, dapat sia
mangin maabi-abihon kag nagahigugma
nagapamatok sa sini nga pagtulon-an” (Tit.
1:7-9). Ang pari naga-representar sa isa ka
institusyon nga may awtoridad – indi sa
paggahom kundi sa pag-alagad.
4. Ang pari amo ang nagapanguna sa
paghalad sang Eukaristiya tungod kay iya
ginahalad ang balaan nga Sakripisyo sang
Misa sa persona ni Kristo. Iya ginatipon
ang katilingban sa pagpangamuyo, kag
sa “pagpamihakpihak sang tinapay” sa
“pagbantala sang pagkamatay sang Ginuo
tubtob sa iya pagbalik”. Tungod kay ang
Misa amo ang pinakamataas nga bahin sang
pangamuyo kag bulohaton sang Simbahan,
amo man ini ang pinakasentro nga bulohaton

Maayong Balita, kita ginapadala man

ukon workplace. May kilala man ako nga
babaye nga nagabulig patigayon sang

lamang. Sarang sila makagamit sang
sandalyas pero indi na sila magdala sang
ilislan nga bayu. Luyag bala ni Jesus nga
mangin miserable ang kabuhi sang iya
mga gintoton-an? Of course not!
Providence. Indi kila pagpabay-an sang
Dios kay ang Dios magahatag sang aton
pangkinahanglanon. Subong man, kon
diutay ang aton pagkabutang, kita nga mga
gintoton-an ni Jesus mangin single-minded
kag focused sa aton mga ulobrahon. Indi
kita madali ma-distract sa aton pagbantala
sang Maayong Balita.
Let us remember these insights: the
work of evangelization must be a communal
endeavor and not a personal project. As
apostles, let us trust in Divine Providence
and be focus in our work for the good of the
people and for the greater glory of God!

Cofradia Jumpstarts Devotion to
Ntra Sra. de la Candelaria

ast Saturday, July 4, being
the 1st Saturday of the
1st month of the 3rd
Quarter, the Cofradia de Nuestra
Señora de la Candelaria held
a meeting presided over by
Msgr. Alejandro P. Esperancilla,
Spiritual Director.
As an organization, the
Cofradia has for its VisionMission and its two-fold
objectives:
1. To promote proper
devotion to the Blessed Virgin
Mary in accordance with the
Spirit and directives of the 2nd
Vatican Council, the 2nd Plenary
Council of the Philippines, and
the 3rd Diocesan Synod of the
Archdiocese of Jaro.
2. To promote active
participation in the life and
mission of the local Church
through active involvement
in the apostolate of the Parish
where its members reside.
Since the charism of this
Confraternity is to promote
true devotion to Mary in the call
of the times - in a life lived in
constant attentiveness to God’s
call; a life lived for others; a life
lived with openness to accept
the sacrifices occasioned and
brought about by faithfulness to
the way of Jesus and a life lived
in active participation in the life

Alma D. Blanca
and mission of the local Church
- Msgr. Andy asked the group to
identify ways and measures for
promoting proper devotion to the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
The following are the
measures
identified
for
popularizing and propagating
this devotion:
1. Invite other people/
barangay residents to become
Cofradia members;
2. Inform
parishioners
of the weekly rosary/novena
through Candle Light, pahibalo
during Sunday Masses or through
Bombo Radyo before the Novena
begins;
3. Formation
program/
adult catechism on Mary
preferably on a Saturday
afternoon;
4. Put up a little “corner”
in Candle Light, write-ups
on the Cofradia, testimonies
and devotion to Mary starting
September 8 as a birthday gift to
Mama Mary;
5. Leaflets/pamphlets/
flyers/estampitas/prayer cards
to be placed at the entrance of the
Cathedral with a donation box
underneath;
6. Radio program through
Bombo Radyo just before feasts
of the Blessed Virgin Mary or
during Novena days.

To jumpstart the project, the
Daughters of Mary Immaculate
(DMI) is set to donate five
hundred pieces of estampitas to
be distributed starting July 18.
Msgr. Andy emphasized
that as active Cofradia members,
we should pray the Liturgy of
the Hour. The Breviary is more
essential than praying novenas
written by different authors
because the prayers, Psalms, and
canticles were inspired by the
Holy Spirit. When we pray the
Liturgy of the Hour, we connect
our prayers with the Church, and
most importantly, we are being
sanctified throughout the day.
Msgr. Andy also clarified that
worship “of” the Church is Liturgy,
the whole Body of Christ, or the
Church that is praying with you;
while worship “in” the Church is
individual prayer like the Rosary,
Novenas, etc.
The body also approved the
annual dues of three hundred
sixty-five pesos per member,
starting this year, 2015. Deadline
is set on October 3 during the next
meeting.
The meeting ended at fourthirty in the afternoon with
everybody
enlightened
and
satisfied.
The next quarterly
meeting is scheduled for October
3, 2015.

art of the vocation journey our priests
is their assignment in the different
parishes of our Archdiocese. July 4,
2015, marks the re-assignment of our two
parochial vicars: Fr. Nathaniel Gentizon
and Fr. Randy Doromal to other parishes.
It also marks the welcoming celebration to
the new ones: Fr. Mark Lester Senina and
Fr. Martin Alarcon
The occasion started with the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass, celebrated by Msgr.
Higinio C. Velarde, our Parish Priest.
Concelebrants were Frs. Nathaniel
Gentizon, Randy Dromal and Mark Lester
Senina. A program and dinner followed at
the La Isabelita Hall, attended by the BAC
Coordinators, Tri Council, Youth, JPMAS,
Youth Ministry, HKC, LOMAS MAMO Heads,
St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School
Teachers and Staff, Cathedral Priests,
Candlelight Staff and Parish Personnel
and Staff. Hosts were Daisyrie Diesto and
Jullie Ann Blancaflor. Warm messages of
thank you’s and goodbyes were given to Fr.
Randy and Fr. Nath; warm welcome were
given to Fr. Mark and Fr. Martin.
We would like to thank our Brgy. leaders
who actively helped in the preparation
of the venue; the Youth Ministry for
facilitating the program. Special thanks to
our benefactors and donors for sharing
everybody’s favorite dish - lechon, shared
by Atty. and Mrs. Enrique Arguelles, Mrs.
Imelda Florete and Mrs. Emma Victoria.
This made the occasion all the more worth
remembering and enjoyable.

Our
Pastoral Ministry says:
“Evangelization takes place in obedience to
the missionary mandate of Jesus our Lord
- ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you.’”(Mt. 28:19-20)… EG 19.
Understanding this passage from
Evangelii Gadium, we are one with you as
you take part in this new mission of “going
forth”, our dear Fr. Nathaniel Gentizon and
Fr. Randy Doromal.
We had a very meaningful journey with
you both. We met and laughed together in
the office, walked together in the barangays,
visited the MKKs in their homes and chapels,
and danced with the senior citizens and
youth. We planned activities, agreed with
and even contradicted with one another for
the good of the pastoral ministry. We had
sleepless nights coping with the fiesta and
liturgical activities especially during Lent,
Advent and Christmas. Regardless of the
hectic schedules and laborious activities,
we developed harmonious working
relationship. Of course, we also failed
many times, we stumbled and we struggled
over failures and pressures. We also have
restless days and we thank you for all of
these because these strengthened our team
and even made us more flexible in doing
our tasks for the greater glory of God.
To our new parish parochial vicars we
look forward to our new journey with you.

Shroud of Turin Replica in PH

OLO, Iloilo City, July 7, 2015 — A lifesize replica of the Shroud of Turin has
been made available for public viewing
in St. Anne Parish in Molo, Iloilo City, to provide
a more accessible and a more meaningful way
of reflecting on the passion and death of Jesus
Christ.
Parish priest Fr. Espiridion R. Celis Jr.
said they introduced the replica of the Holy
Shroud for the first time in Molo during the
observance of the Holy Week.
According to the parish priest the replica
was imported from California, courtesy of the
Shroud of Turin Research Project, with the
help of an unnamed donor from Iloilo.
Jubilee of Mercy
“This is a way for our parish to help
prepare the faithful for the Extraordinary
Jubilee of Mercy,” the priest explained.
The Molo parish priest stressed that the
exhibition of the life-size replica of the Holy
Shroud, believed to be the burial cloth which
was used to wrap Jesus Christ’s remains, is
a unique chance offered to devotees in the
Philippines.
“The Holy Shroud can be visited as long

CANDLE LIGHT (July 12-18 2015)

as the church is open. There is no time limit,”
Celis said.
Aside from the veneration of the Shroud,
St. Anne Parish has scheduled intensive
catechism sessions on Wednesdays, open to
all.

‘Worth the pains’
The parish priest recalled from one of
catechism classes a resolution made by a
devotee upon venerating the Holy Shroud:
“Adopt the wound in Jesus’ body which was
caused by your sin. Kiss it… so that, it will not
hurt.”
“This alone is worth all the pains of
bringing the Holy Shroud all the way to Molo,”
Celis said.
The recent visit of Pope Francis to Turin
on June 21, to venerate the Holy Shroud,
sparked renewed interest in the shroud
among the faithful.
Imprinted on the linen cloth are the
face and body of a man bearing the marks of
crucifixion.
Face of Mercy
Although the Shroud has been popularly

venerated for centuries, the Catholic Church
has so far neither officially endorsed nor
rejected the belief that it was Jesus Christ’s
burial cloth.
Celis said their primary objective is to bring
people closer to the Shroud, so that they can
contemplate the Face of Jesus Christ or the
“Misericordiae Vultus” (the Face of Mercy).
“Misericordiae Vultus” is also the title of
the Bull of Indiction issued by Pope Francis
convoking the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
that will begin on Dec. 8.
The exhibition of the Holy Shroud in the
Cathedral of Turin is a rare event. In the
past five centuries the Shroud of Turin was
displayed for veneration 18 times only. The
latest public exhibition was held in April 19 to
June 24, 2015.
Although everyone is given the opportunity
to see and pray before the Holy Shroud, visits
are limited every 15 minutes only and visitors
are advised to book well in advance, stated the
Shroud of Turin Visiting Information Service
in its website.

JARO CARMEL CELEBRATES FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

P

ope Francis called on all consecrated
men and women to “wake up the world”
by declaring the period 30 November
2015 to 2 February 2016 as the “Year of
Consecrated Life”.
On the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
on 16 July 2015, we highlight this year’s
celebration with the theme “The Consecrated
Life at the Service of the Church: An Imitation
of Mary”.
At the Jaro Carmelite Monastery in
Sambag, Jaro, the Feast was preceded by
Novena Masses that started on 7 July and
end on the 15th. Within the Masses are
introduced the apostolates of the different
congregations of consecrated men and women
in our Archdiocese. All Masses, including the
Feast-day Mass, start at six-thirty a.m., with
another Feast-day Mass at five p.m. A solemn
Procession from Jaro Cathedral to the Jaro
Carmelite Monastery at five-thirty a.m. opens
the Feast-day celebration on the 16th.
According to Pope Leo XIII, “Carmel
is entirely Marian.” One of the noted
characteristics of Carmelite spirituality is
the presence of the Virgin Mary in our life, in
communion with her and in imitation of her
virtues.
Among the virtues of the Blessed Virgin
Mary which our Mother Foundress, St.
Teresa of Avila, recommended for imitation
is her humility, poverty of spirit, simplicity,
openness to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
and the attitude of prayerful amazement for
all the wonders that God has done for her.
On various occasions, the thought of the
Blessed Virgin would arouse in St. Teresa
an understanding of the Carmelite vocation.
She writes: “All of us who wear the holy
habit of Carmel are called to prayer and

t was a pleasant afternoon on June 28, 2015
when we, the scholars, were gathered again
for the last time together with our parents
and with our beloved spiritual director, Rev.
Fr. Nathaniel Gentizon.
We started the afternoon by praying the
Holy Rosary, led by Ashley Lobres. Then, we
sang “God Is the Strength of My Heart”, taught
to us by Fr. Nath. Indeed, it was a pacifying
song that touched our hearts, we sang it
repeatedly.
Afterwards, the Gospel was read, formally
opening our formation. Then, we paused for a
minute to reflect about the fruits of the Visita
Casa to our family, which we had a month ago.
We shared our reflections to our seatmates,
then Fr. Nath invited our parents to share
their reflections to everyone. Three parents
shared their thoughts, telling the audience
that they felt happy and blessed. They told the
audience how meaningful the entire Visita
Casa experience was for them. Visita Casa is a
success and is treasured by many.
We do pray that we will also have our
home visit to our new dedicated members
in order for us to know them and their
families better. After our sharing, Fr. Nath

In Mary, Carmelites scattered all over the

to prayer as “a hidden treasure, a precious
pearl which is within us and demands a total
gift of our life”.
The life of Carmel is a life in communion
with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The sign of
this communion is the Brown Scapular. It is

talked about “communication” which is very
important to a family. He emphasized that we
should show our affections to each member
of the family not just through words but
through our actions. I believe that children
nowadays are engaged in new technologies
which can hamper real person-to-person
communication.
As children of our parents, we should
give more time to communicating with them
rather than texting, surfing in the internet
and playing in our tablets or ipad. We should
bear in mind that communication is a way of
creating harmonious relationships, and as the
saying goes, action speaks louder than words.
Life is too short to miss the time showing our
care and love to one another.
At the latter part our formation, Fr. Nath
discussed about the proposed formation for
the parents of the scholars. They agreed to
have a formation once every quarter so that
they would also know one another more, and
of course, to help them strengthen their faith
in God.
After the discussion, Fr. Nath presented
the contract of the parish scholarship
program. We ended our afternoon by singing

again “God Is the Strength of My Heart”,
closing prayers followed.
Memorabilia was given to Fr.
Nath. May he treasure this forever.
Yes! This might be our last formation with
him but we knew that we’ll have this again
someday somewhere.
In behalf of the Jaro Parish Scholars,
I would like to take this opportunity to
express our gratitude to our dearest Fr.
Nath. We are so thankful and blessed to have
Fr. Nath as part of our lives. You were our
mentor, motivator, friend, a shoulder to cry
on, and, our second father. We really thank
God for sending you to us. Indeed, you are
really a blessing. As you enter a new world,
may you also be a blessing to others. May you
continue to selflessly help those who are in
need. And may God continue to guide you
wherever you are.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank
you for everything. We love you and we will
surely miss you, Fr. Nath! We promise that we
will continue to strengthen our relationship
with one another and with Almighty God.
God bless you on your journey. Take care
always!

CANDLE LIGHT (July 12-18 2015)

I

was in the fourth year high school
when Mrs. Petra Magbanua, our English
instructor, taught us poetry in broken
lines, introduced and popularized by
Christopher Marlowe, an English poet and
writer. The style was more beautiful than
poems written in rhyming lines.
When my daughter Iris opened the
Lacuesta Learning Center, I wrote articles
for declamation, oration, essays and poetry.
We chose the nice ones and bound them as a
handbook for the children’s use.
While praying the rosary one day, I was
inspired by our Blessed Mother’s participation in our redemption, so, I got my pen and
wrote this poem in broken lines:

She became a pillar of compassion
– of communion
Of self-abnegation-of endurance
Mary is always there
A star to light our way
A star to give us hope
A star to give us strength

Where there is danger
There she is, to keep us safe
Where there is doubt
There she is to give faith

So when I see a star
My face lights up
Because
It is Mary- my Mother who cares

Mary, My Star
I just wonder
What is that very bright star doing there?
Too bright
Too beautiful

She caresses everybody
She cleans the dirty
She kisses the sick
She cuddles the weak

While clouds sail over her
For a while
But she comes out again
Prettier! Brighter!
Isn’t Mary
The brightest star?
Isn’t she that
sweet-smelling flower?

Her mother’s heart was pierced
Her mother’s love overflowed
But behind the clouds of grief
She came out lovelier-prettier-stronger-firmer
Her grief turned to love
Her tears turned to smiles

On the top of calvary
She felt crucified watching Jesus suffer
She died a thousand times
To see Jesus hanging on the cross
