Welcome New Parishioners! As of this writing there may be a few bulletin inserts but one is for sure at least, namely, “Casino Night,” a school fundraiser. The other possible bulletin inserts are regarding the Wednesday evening Stations of the Cross during and the two or three times on Friday. The other is another Lenten related activity, namely, a “fish fry.” On this weekend, the first Sunday of Lent, in most parishes, the Rite of Election is celebrated with the catechumens who are ready for the Easter sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Unfortunately, there is not a single catechumen here! Nevertheless, since the two-fold purpose of Lent is to prepare catechumens for the reception of the Easter sacraments and the renewal of those of us who have already received the Easter sacraments, we can, as a parish, participate in the second, but equally important, purpose of renewing our own spiritual life that comes to us through the sacraments. With regards to receiving the sacraments, we will have about ten to fifteen children First Communions and less than ten teenage Confirmations. These are small numbers. Both of these sacraments for the young will be celebrated during the Easter season. The Church presents us with the perfect Gospel passage for the beginning of Lent: the temptations of Jesus. Yes, everyone is tempted, even Jesus! Another way to put it is, if Jesus was tempted we can be sure that we will! Although we may be motivated by fear not to give into temptation, this is a valid enough reason and legitimate according to the spiritual tradition. Although the perfect way to avoid falling into temptation is because we are motivated by God’s love to prefer Him to everything else. In the end, the way of God is the way of blessings and peace; the other way is the way of, well, can I just say, hell, and hell on earth. And remember what they say, it’s a slippery road! Anyway, we have a hero and winner in the struggle against evil: Jesus, who overcame the most powerful temptations. So, he is not only our model but also our helper, by His grace. Pope Benedict has published his Lenten Message 2010 for the world, which is as eloquent as ever. He says that justice is normally and correctly understood as giving to each person his or her due. This is correct but there is another justice that comes from God, namely, the justice of the sacrifice of Jesus that gives us justice whether we deserve it or not. We are justified by the grace and gift of God. Then, we can share that grace and justification with others. I invite you to read in its entirety. Simply go to our web page, which is on the front of our bulletin, click the links button and go to the Vatican web page, then click on English (unless you prefer another language) then go to Latest Updates, then to the
