Integrating Conflict Resolution Education Skills and

Techniques Into Classroom Operations

One of the main goals of the conflict resolution education training

for educators is to have them apply these skills and concepts
into their current or future classrooms through curriculum
integration and as a classroom management strategy. Ideally,
school personnel might also work together as a team to create
a comprehensive school conflict management program. While
the planning tools included below are specifically for individual
educators to help develop a plan for their classrooms, additional
information for whole school planning can be downloaded at no
cost from the Managing and Resolving Conflicts Effectively in
Schools and Classrooms 5 day course developed for the United
States Department of Education and available at:
http://www.creducation.org/cre/homebase/module/managing_and_
resolving_conflicts/

These forms were originally developed and utilized as a

component of the Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and
Conflict Management and the Ohio Department of Education’s
School Conflict Management Grant Initiatives and with Ohio
Colleges and Universities integrating these themes into teacher
preparation (More information is available at:
www.disputeresolution.ohio.gov)

Planning tools include:

• An Application Sheet
• Sample 25 Core Lessons
• Conflict Resolution Education Action Plan – Classroom
Management Plan
• Sample Curriculum Integration Action Plan
• Conflict Resolution Education Action Plan – Curriculum
Integration
• Comprehensive Plan Notes (Optional)

Instructor Notes

Application Worksheet (participant guide, page ?). (Overall time ?

minutes).

How to Utilize the Application Worksheet

Notes to instructors:

1. You will need one worksheet per training day for each participant.
Application
2. The application worksheets should be given to the participants
Worksheet
in the middle of the afternoon session each day.
3. This should not be the last activity of the day.
4. Review the directions at the top of the page.
5. Ask participants to consider and note how they will adapt the ac-
tivities to their particular grade level, special education classes or a
particular subject area.
6. Encourage participants to be as detailed as possible, writing
actual activities they might use, if they have the resource guides or
the participant manuals, they could include page numbers, titles of
activities they think they might want to utilize, and consider when the
activity or lessons might best be completed in the school year.

This detail helps participants when they complete their action plan
forms on the last day of the training. Instructors do not generally col-
lect these.

They are intended as “notes” pages to help the participants collect

and organize information they might want to include in their action
plans on curriculum integration and classroom management.

After each participant completes the application worksheet, use one

of the following formats to share the information.

As participants report out to the large group, be sure to ask them to

identify how and when the activities will be used in their classrooms.

A different format could be used each day:

1. Participants share their responses in pairs. Volunteers share the

information with the large group.
2. Group participants according to grade levels taught (or licensure
levels). Participants share their responses within the group. Report
out to large group.
3. Group participants according to subject areas taught (or licensure
areas). Participants share their responses within the group. Report
out to large group.
4. Volunteers share the information with the large group.

Conflict Resolution Education

Application Worksheet

How will you use the information about conflict education that we have just discussed? Note
your ideas in the sections below. Be as detailed as possible as this will assist you when you
complete your curriculum integration and classroom management action plans. If you use
a specific activity, include information to help you locate it later (book, page number, name
etc.)

What skill or concept are you focusing on?

What activity or exercise are you planning to use to develop this skill or concept in
your classes?

When might you use the activity or introduce the concept? (the start of the day, the
start of the school year, the first week of school, etc.).

How can you use the skill or concept in improving your classroom?

How can you use the skill or concept to improve your relationship with your stu-
dents?

How can you use the skill or concept to improve your relationship with students’ par-
ents and/or families?

How can you use the skill or concept to improve your relationship with peers and col-
leagues?

25 Core School Conflict Management (SCM) Lessons

Notes to Instructors:

This handout shares sample lessons that help students learn

SCM Lessons
the core skills of understanding conflict, understanding how
emotions influence conflict, effective communication skills, and
problem solving. The lessons, from the Ohio Commission on
Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management and the Ohio
Department of Education’s “School Conflict Management Re-
source Guide for Grades K-8” and the “School Conflict Man-
agement Resource Guides for Grades 7-12”, help with curricu-
Group Discussion lum integration of the CRE skills.

While 25 lessons are listed, educators should tailor the selec-

tion and number of lessons based on their students’ needs.
Distribute the 25 Core Lessons handout to participants.

Discuss the following points:

1. What is the sequence of conflict resolution skills devel-

oped in these 25 lessons?
2. Why is the sequencing important in the development of
conflict resolution skills?
3. How would you use these lessons in your classroom?
How might you need to adapt them?
4. What timeline would you use for these lessons? Opti-
mally, educators should teach a minimum of one lesson
per week and not skip weeks.

Encourage participants to locate these lessons on their

curriculum CDs to familiarize themselves with these les-
sons and the large selection of options available to them in
the guides.

Conflict Resolution Education Action Plan – Curriculum Integra-

tion

Notes to instructors:
CRE Action Plan -
This will be completed at the end of the training utilizing in part, their
Curriculum
application sheets.

Some colleges and universities make this an assignment or part of

the assignment for their students. Individuals will need at least one
copy for curriculum integration planning and one for their individual
classroom management plan.

• Distribute the CRE Action Plan sheets with the 25 Core

SCM lessons.

• Explain that this sheet can be used to identify additional

lessons, some lessons specifically relevant to their
own classrooms and a specific timeline when integrating
CRETE in to their curriculum.

1. Use these sheets to outline your plan for establishing a peace-
able classroom.
2. Identify a strategy from the list provided on the work sheet or
presented in the Conflict Resolution Education training that would
help you to improve conflict management in your classroom or
school. Strategies might include bullying prevention and interven-
tion strategies, use of class meetings, use of dialogue circles,
establishing a peaceable classroom corner for students to resolve
their own conflicts, writing classroom guidelines, etc.
3. Identify Conflict Resolution Education lessons that could be used
as steps to accomplishing this strategy, including a timeline for
implementation and specific lessons and resource materials from
the Conflict Resolution Education CD.

Bully Map teams as it relates to the development of a comprehensive ap-
Exercise proach. It could be offered to in-service teachers as another plan-
ning tool to be used after they establish the curriculum integration
and individual classroom management plans in their schools. This
form might include larger initiatives such as the development of
a peer mediation program, restorative justice programs, parent
engagement activities, professional development efforts to train all
staff in these skills, etc.
