3.1 New hardware WDM applications

PSS-32S

New shelf that integrates OTN switching into the photonic element,
creating a Client/Line transport architecture for ultimate efficiency in
the transport layer; composed of a new shelf, power filter, fan, and
matrix cards. The 1830 PSS-32S can be used as an extension shelf in a
photonic NE to provide switching capability in support of Client/Line
applications. The addition of an PSS-32S to a photonic compound, as an
extension shelf, brings a convergence of OTN switching capability to the
photonic NE.

112PDM11

Card optimized for low-latency, high-capacity transport of Ethernet traffic

over Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) distances

PTPCTL/PTPIO

Precision Time Protocol Control (PTPCTL) implements and distributes BITS,

packet layer frequency, and time synchronization to the PSS-32 shelf;
Precision Time Protocol I/O (PTPIO) card provides PTP transport over WDM
links (two degrees)

New pluggables

Several new pluggable XFPs and SFP are introduced. Consult the PIP guide
for full details

Additional packs

Enhanced versions of existing circuit packs are now available (11QCUPC,

130SCUP 100G Uplink cards, 4QPA8 OT for PSS-4 only)

3.2 OTN basic principals

The Optical Channel (OCh) provides end-to-end bandwidth management for a wavelength signal in the
photonic domain.
The Optical Data Unit (ODU) provides end-to-end bandwidth management for a sub-wavelength signal in
the electronic domain. The ODU is a fixed-sized container with in-band OAM tools for quality supervision
and SLA assurance. The ODU functions as primary bearer for client traffic.
Higher-order ODU (HO-ODU) transparently carries multiple (multiplexed) lower-order ODUs which can
transport 1.25 Gb/s, 2.5 Gb/s, or 10 Gb/s client signal rates.

3.3 PSS-32S shelf

Converged Client/Line application:
The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch
32S provides DWDM/OTN/TDM convergence on a
single shelf. Used with other shelves of the AlcatelLucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) family of
products, they provide an optimized transport
solution with low cost, high flexibility service
aggregation with protection
PSS-32S can be used as an extension shelf in a
photonic NE to provide switching capability in
support of Client-Line applications. The addition of
an PSS-32S to a photonic NE, as an extension shelf,
brings a convergence of OTN switching capability to
the photonic NE
The PSS-32S will be combined with 1830 PSS-32
and 1830 PSS-16 shelves to form a multi-shelf NE,
where it can be either a main, or a subtending shelf.
The PSS-32S will provide DWDM/OTN/TDM
Convergence on a single shelf.
Conventional OTN switching provides a solution for
large scale any-to-any connectivity in multi-domain
OTN transport networks. Client/Line implementation
leverages underlying OTN technology within a single
photonic node with focus on efficient and adaptable
photonic transport.

3.5 PTPCTL/PTPIO circuit packs

The PTPCTL (Precision Time Protocol Control)
card timing card is used to distribute frequency
and phase timing in the OTN network
It can import timing information from dedicated
timing devices (e.g. BITS, time server) via the
BITS and ToD ports. It can also connect to
Ethernet ports on client network devices to
distribute the timing information
Used with the PTPIO card to distribute the
timing information over the WDM link across the
OTN network
PTPCTL card implements a layer1 clock (EEC)
and a PTP clock to distribute the timing
The PTPCTL card can be installed in 1830 PSS-16
slots 3 to 9 and 13 to 19, and in 1830 PSS-32 slots
2 to 17 and 20 to 35

3.5 PTPCTL/PTPIO circuit packs [cont.]

The PTPIO (Precision Time Protocol I/O) card
is used together with a timing card. The
timing card can be the PTPCTL card or any
OT card that implements syncE and PTP and
has FE/GE optical ports (11DPE12A OT
provides this capability)
The timing card provides the PTPIO card with
the FE/GE signal which carries syncE and
1588 timing information. The PTPIO card
adapts that timing signal for transport over a
WDM link through the 1625nm channel
The PTPIO card is inserted between the WDM
link and the LD, OSCT, OMD, or OPS card.
The timing card is located in the same shelf
as the PTPIO card in order to control the
optical switch
The PTPIO card can be installed in 1830 PSS16 slots 3 to 9 and 13 to 19, and in 1830 PSS32 slots 2 to 17 and 20 to 35

3.6 PSS-16 hybrid ILAs

PSS16 will be used at ILA sites to offer
smaller footprints and costs compared to
PSS-32. Depending on application needs,
there could be mixtures of different
