Broad Haven School Official Opening

To celebrate the completion of our wonderful new building, Broad Haven School we
will be holding an Official Opening Ceremony, followed by an Open Afternoon on
Saturday 26th September 2015.
Broad Haven School has been at the heart of our community for many years we
would like to invite as many people as possible from the schools past, present and
future to attend an open afternoon, and for that we need your help!
On the page opposite is an extract from the programme from the original opening
ceremony on 27th June 1963. We would like to invite as many of the original
attendants and their families as we can. If you are, are related to, or know the
whereabouts of any of these people or their families then please get in touch with
Mr Gareth Lewis (Acting Head Teacher), or Mrs Vivienne Grey (Assistant Head)

We are also gathering together an archive of school memories photos, school
reports, newspaper clippings, art work etc to put on a display at the open afternoon.
So again if you have anything you would be happy to share please get in touch, or
drop it into the school office or Londis Post Office (please ensure all items are
clearly labelled, and enclose your contact details if you want them back).
We would also like to include any past, present & future pupils and their families
who would like to get involved in the day, so if you have a skill you would be happy
to share please get in touch eg music, singing, gymnastics, UFO spotting, or just
helping pour cups of tea! Alternatively just come along and have a look round our
wonderful new school.
Following the official opening ceremony the school will be open to everyone from
1pm. So please come along to see our new village school and share in what we
hope will be the first of many special celebrations held there.

Broad Haven Village

Hall - Update
What have we been doing to improve the Village Hall?

In addition to applying for grants we have recently held the following
successful events :1. The Vagrants Crew Social evening raising 495, saw the village hall
packed out with a lively crowd enjoying sea shanties and folk songs.
2. The Beetle Drive organised by the WI on behalf of the Village Hall
raised 280. This was great fun and enjoyed by all who attended.
3. The fantastic Seacow Gig on 22nd May raised 155, and was
organised jointly representatives from the Boardwalk group and the
Village Hall.
4. A recent donation of 300 from the Charity shop in Johnston Thanks
to Mrs Mary Davies and Broad haven Chapel for.
Following these successes we, as a committee have been busy planning a variety
of events, to not only raise funds to improve the village hall but also to revive life
back into the hall by using and enjoying this venue. Yes, it needs attention, we are
working on this; but it is still a viable venue and is a fantastic facility/ resource for
our community. Please look at the list of events that we have planned and try to
support us at some of these events or organise your own to help us fundraise. It
really could be a case of use your village hall or lose!
Improvements during the summer holidays will include the hall ceiling being
replaced and will be continued across the hall. Repainting of the hall will then follow
as soon as possible afterwards. The hall committee would like to thank Mr Brian
Henderson for his help in working to secure funding and grants for the hall and in
organising and overseeing these recent improvements. Brian is leaving the area
during the summer months and although the committee are extremely sorry to see
him leave, wish him the very best as he moves to North Devon.

Hoare.
The service will take place in Walton West at 3 PM and
afterwards there will be a tea in the Bowen Memorial Hall in
Little Haven.

order to meet Diana and welcome her to our parishes.

WI NEWS
The July meeting was held at Broad Haven Village Hall. Our guest speaker was
Tydfil Morgan who gave us a demonstration on Summer Cooking,which of course
we could all sample! Cheese biscuits,marmite and cheese scones,raspberry
traybake, and last but not least strawberry cheesecake. What a feast! Vote of
thanks was given by Ann McClean.
We have all been busy this month attending Garden parties at Buckingham
Palace, meetings at the Albert Hall, flower demonstrations with an unexpected
concert by Milford Haven Youth Brass Band,visits to chicken and solar farms,
entering a Craft Exhibition which is held at Scolton Manor this month - do visit and
see what the WI in Pembrokeshire are doing. Ann Lees photograph is also on next
Years WI calender, and of course we will be helping with the teas at the Havens
Carnival on Saturday July 25th. Members dont forget The Waverley trip on
September 7th Hostesses were Gina and June.
Our next meeting is Tuesday SEPTEMBER 8th. 7-30 at Broad Haven Village Hall.

Everyone in the Havens was "Down on the
Farm" on Saturday 25th July. Hundreds of
people joined the Carnival procession along
the seafront in blazing sunshine. Stallholders
on the school field hosted fun games & crafts for everyone to enjoy.
Bumper Crowds were entertained by
Samba.doc band and Hwyl Davies' Dog n
Ducks and the famous Baileys BaaAscot
sheep racing whilst the more adventurous
enjoyed the thrill of holding Boa constrictors
and tarantulas presented by Pembrokshire
Pet Parties. The day
concluded with a welly
wanging competition and
the traditional egg throwing
madness!

The Ladies of the village presented delicious cakes

, tea and coffee in the brand new school canteen
Just a note to thank all those who contributed cakes
for sale in the carnival tea room. Also a special
thanks to all the ladies who gave their services
throughout the afternoon. It is certainly true that'
many hands make light work'! Many thanks for
making it a very successful afternoon. Looking
forward forward to making next year even more

Open letter to the Havens Community Council - Trafalgar Road Car Park
Before the extension to the Broad Haven school was started the Community
Council agreed that half of the Trafalgar Road car park would be made available
for the contractors to store equipment. In return the contractors would make a
donation to the Community Council funds. No formal agreement was entered into
and no value was attached for the amount to be 'donated' by the contractors.
For the past twelve months work has been going on at the school and for nearly
the whole of that time not half the car park, but the total car park, has been used
by the contractors and there sub-contractors denying local residents and visitors
the use of the car park. During that period I am not aware of any complaints from
local residents who have had to put up with noise, dust and and endless traffic
disruption, because we were pleased to see our school being modernised. Now,
nearing the end of the work, the contractors have offered the Community Council
the sum of two thousand pounds for the twelve months use of our car park. That is
equal to the sum of 5.47 a day.
I hope that in the interest of the community, the Community Council will challenge
this miserable sum and seek a much more realistic figure reflecting the disruption
to our community, for what would the contractors have to pay if the Community
Council had not been so generous in allowing the use of the car park?

The Havens Community Council / Cyngor Cymuned The Havens

The Clerk agreed to feedback the
comments to the Diary Team.
Vandalism It has been reported by
a local resident that there had been
an incident in Meadow View during
which time eggs and other rubbish
were thrown at a house. Whilst no
other residents had complained one
of the Councillors had noted that
there was a large amount of rubbish
tipped nearby at some time in the last
few months which he felt might have
coincided with the eggs thrown at the
door. The matter was reported to the
Police and the Western Telegraph.
On requesting a recent update we
were advised that there had been no
further incidences so far.Towards the
end of June police and local residents
picked up information regarding a
'rave in Broad Haven' being
advertised on social media to be held
at the end of the GCSE exams.
Local businesses were advised and a
large police presence in the Village
on the day in question ensured there
were
no
problems.
Boardwalk Update The last of the
steel structure has been installed
along with the decking planks and
work was now starting on the
handrails which had to be purchased
by donations as it was not covered by
the grant money.
Work will
commence on the 9th and continue
through to the 17th. Posters have
been displayed asking for volunteers
to contact the group and come along
on the workdays to help with the
installations.

MATTERS ARISING
Trafalgar Terrace Car Park
The
Council received a letter from Mr Jim
Garner expressing his disappointment
at the contribution the school
contractors had offered the Community
for the use of the car park. The Council
fully appreciated Jim's comments and
asked the clerk to draft a reply. Cllr
Laurence Hughes fed back to the
Council on the discussions held with
Andrew
Scott
regarding
the
specification intended to repair any
damage to the surface and was advised
that a sub base would be laid down with
a topping of clean stone. They had also
checked the tarmac entrance and this
was found to be in good order. The
finish date for all work at the school is
the 10 August 2015 and it is hoped that
the car park will be vacated by this date.

a fantastic resource produced by local
volunteers councillors had received a
number of comments from residents
regarding the number of pages
dedicated to boardwalk topics versus
other topics. After some discussion it

others from time to time.

POSTERS FOR CHARITABLE EVENTS

Just lately the staff in the Londis shop have been fielding a number
of complaints from people who have been unhappy that a poster they
have left with us has not been put up as quickly as they would have
hoped. Please believe us when we say that we are not intentionally
trying to sabotage your event. We have a limited amount of space
and time (especially at this time of year) in which to deal with these
and, add to the mix that we cannot open the poster holder doors in
windy weather for fear of losing a few, time can march on without us
realising by how much. It is important to us that events in the village
are successful and we support this by not charging for displaying
posters advertising them. We have a dedicated member of staff who
endeavours to keep the posters displayed up to date and current and
to rotate them according to which events will be taking place next.
This person holds the file of posters and the key, but is not here every
day. To help us to keep as many people happy as we can and reduce
everybodys stress levels please would you keep the following in mind
when leaving posters for display:1. No charge is made for putting the
poster up;
2. All are welcome, but priority is
given to charitable events taking
place in the Havens;
3. Please keep the poster to no more
than A4 size;
4. In total there are 28 people who
work in the shop, on a variety of
shifts, and the person you speak to
behind the counter will probably not
know about your poster so please be
kind to them;
5. We all do hope that your event is
successful. Many thanks for your
fore-bearance and understanding in
the future.

Great News for Broad Haven Brownies! Broad Haven Brownies will now be able to continue in September with two new
leaders having come forward. Full details will be in the September Diary; current Brownie parents will be contacted directly as
soon as is possible with a starting date, day and meeting time.
We are however still actively seeking Rainbow Leaders, full

training will be given and lots of support and help is available.
A series of Rainbow events will be organised locally during the
Autumn until a new leader can be found. Details to follow.
COME ON, SOMEONE IN THE HAVENS MUST BE UP

FOR A NEW CHALLENGE!
Guides will continue in the Havens but from September will not
be meeting weekly (due to current small numbers); this has
already arranged with the present members, but new girls
(aged 10-14 years) are always welcome, they do not have to
have been a Brownie or Rainbow to join Guides. The current
Guides will be contacted directly; new girls please use contact numbers in the diary
to find out about meeting times.

Skomer District would like to thank Mrs Jayne Jones for all her work with the
Brownie Unit and also Mrs Stephanie Stapelton for her help with the Rainbow Unit
and wish them every happiness in their retirement but hope that they will both be
able to help out from time to time at specific events / activities

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENS

Have you ever dreamt of having an allotment and of having the space to grow your
own fresh fruit and veg. and avoid supermarket prices? What about the fresh air
and exercise that an allotment affords but are daunted by the prospect of turning a
patch of meadow grass into a productive plot?
Others have done it so why not you in fact with three years experience of the site
there are plenty of folk willing to share their exploits and ready advice to any
newcomer wishing to join the club. So why not set your sights on 2016 now and
start to plan your campaign to reap the benefits next year.
My prescription for a good allotment and healthy back is little and often as so
many people take on a plot and think that their dream garden will materialise after
a couple of intensive Bank Holiday work outs. There is nothing more demoralising
than strimming or digging a patch of ground only to find that if left too long it is worst
than when you started. Achievable, thorough bite size chunks are easier to digest!
Personally chemicals and rotovators are no substitute for digging a small patch,
getting your hands dirty and weeding the ground by hand. Yes a 10m x 10m plot
seems enormous but when broken down into beds of say 2mx3m everything seems
less scary especially if the area you cannot tackle is covered in a weed suppressant
material such as old carpet. The next bed after a few months becomes easier to
tackle and so on until you have dug the whole plot.
Autumn is the time to prepare the beds by weeding, rough digging and manuring in
readiness for winter to do its work as frosts break down the soil and absorb the
nutrients from the muck. Ready for forking over in readiness for planting in early
Spring. It sounds easy but it does take commitment and resolve to keep at it so if
you want encouragement we are there to cheer you along the way.
Other matters to consider, depending on what you intend to grow, are rabbit proof
fencing (which is very effective when properly constructed); netting for brassicas,
and even a shed if you do not want to bother carrying your tools with you every time
you visit.

Broadhaven in which to relax, work
steadily without overdoing it, exercise
without paying gym prices and have the
satisfaction that what you grow is yours, is
fresh and is well worth the effort. So why
not give me a ring and book a plot now
and pay no more until 2017! David

Im one of two Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithologys (BTO) Garden
BirdWatch Scheme in South Wales. Each month I introduce you to a bird or other
animal that you might see in your garden.
Bird of the Month: Goldfinch
Dont be surprised if your garden seems quieter than usual this month. Birds will be
hiding themselves away in order to replace their feathers through their annual
moult, and juveniles will be moving away in search of their own territories. One bird
thats sure to brighten up a quiet garden is the Goldfinch, an exotic looking finch
with a distinctive red, white and black head pattern. Look very closely and you may
be able to separate the sexes the red on the males face extends slightly behind
the eye. Keep an eye out for youngsters that have recently left the nest they are
streakier and lack the red face of adults, but still have characteristic gold wing bars.
Goldfinches forage in flocks (the collective noun is a charm), so theres a good
chance of you seeing more than one. A Goldfinchs bill is thin and narrow compared
with other finches, allowing them to extract seeds from hard-to-reach spaces.
Unlike our jaws which are designed to bite firmly closed, their muscular strength lies
in opening the bill, which enables Goldfinches to enlarge tight feeding places so that
their tongue can scoop out tasty seeds.
Did you know?
The beak of a male is about 1mm longer than that
of a female. This enables males to extract the
seed-heads of teasels, while females may focus on
thistles instead.
In the nineteenth century Goldfinches were popular
cage birds; unfortunately this tradition still
continues in some parts
of Europe.

ways, although many Garden BirdWatchers are
seeing a change of allegiance to sunflower hearts.
Dandelion seeds are also popular - the perfect
excuse for not keeping your garden too tidy!

Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern).

BTO Garden BirdWatch data show a large increase in the reporting rate of
Goldfinches using Welsh (and UK) gardens over the last 15 years as they take
advantage of the supplementary food provided. The largest charm of Goldfinches
Ive seen in my garden contained 22 individuals - what a fantastic sight!

In September 2007 the Baptist Church in Broad Haven was asked if

it would wish to take over a charity shop in Glebelands, Johnston . As
you will see from the regular adverts appearing in the Community
Diary we have been operating it ever since. It is run by our unpaid
volunteers and as no-one is on a salary we have been able as a result
to donate in excess of 120,000 to support Christian and community
projects at home and overseas.
Locally the Boardwalk Group and the Village Hall have received funds
and so have other Pembrokeshire groups working with the homeless
,providing debt counselling services and foodbanks
Thanks to all who provide goods and support us. There is easy
parking outside the shop , which is across the road from the new
NISA store . If you would wish to volunteer a few hours each week
then do get in touch.

QUIZ : ANSWERS
1 The Sea Slater whose armadillo-like covering supposedly resembles roof tiles.
Reputed to change its colouring to match the background.
2 A Neap Tide from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning scarcely moving. Occurs when
the moons influence is counteracted by the suns attraction.
3 A Jellyfish called a Portuguese Man O War consisting of a crested swim bladder
and long trailing tentacles producing a potent sting.
4 Fronds, Stipes and Holdfasts that secrete a mucus glue to anchor to rocks.
5 The Weever fish (Latin name = Draco = Dragon) Its powerful sting should be
treated by immersing the affected limb in tolerable hot water.
6 The Green Flash. As the sun disappears its light rays are bent by the atmosphere
leaving only green to reach the observer.
7 Thrift, so called because it can thrive in poor soils.
8 Mussel has the same derivation as Muscle from musculus, a small mouse.
Mussels on rocks resemble small mice and muscles rippling under the skin look like
mice running e.g. a contracting biceps muscle. The name Limpet comes from the
Greek : to lick; a rock. Limpets graze on rocks, their teeth are the hardest biological
material known and they scour out a hollow in the rock to produce a resting place
:home scar.
