INTRODUCTION

Some of the most pervasive sources of noise in the environment come from
transportation systems. Highway traffic noise is a dominant noise source in urban and rural
environment. The level of highway traffic noise depends on three things which are the volume of
the traffic, the speed of the traffic, and the number of trucks in the flow of the traffic. Generally,
the loudness of traffic noise is increased by the heavier traffic volumes, higher speed, and greater
numbers of trucks. The measurement of noise level is necessary to determine the solution for
traffic noise reduction. Besides that, a field noise investigation also can be conducted to
determine existing noise level and gather information to develop and calibrate the traffic noise
model that was used for predicting future noise levels.

OBJECTIVE
1. To measure the pattern of existing noise levels.
2. To perform the statistical analysis on noise sample collected and interpret the result
obtained.

APPARATUS AND EQUIPMENT


1. Traffic noise tester

PROCEDURES
i

Select and sketch the layout of the study area (proper and strategic location),
located at the school and beside the road.

ii

Record the sound level of moving vehicle using the sound level meter.

iii

Observe and record the data at 10 seconds interval in the data sheet for
duration of 45 minutes.

The site study :

CONCLUSION

The experiment was conducted at in front of ALPS Electric factory. There are a lot of
vehicles passing through the roadway. For example motorcycle, car, van, taxi, lorry and bus. The
highest number of vehicles that use the roadway is car. The traffic noise level is higher because
the speed of the vehicle that passes through the roadway is high. The speed of the vehicle is
higher because there are no other vehicles on the roadway and the condition of the roadway is
free flow. Traffic noise level will be reducing when there are many numbers of vehicles on the
road. So that driver will slow down the speed of the vehicles. Sometimes, the drivers do not
follow the rule. They change the sound of the exhaust so that it will produce high level of noise.
Based on the result, the high level of traffic noise is because there are some lorries pass through
the roadway. Motorcycles also give the same data which is high level of traffic noise..

Discussion

Based on the data tabulated a few vehicles have been observed during the traffic noise for 45 min
duration. According to data obtained, the arithmetic mean, u are 75.04 db. While the median
speeds, v for these data are 74.02 db. So that the median class is 70 74.9 db. The standard
deviation calculated based on data is 48.03 db.
Generally, the loudness of traffic noise is increased by heavier traffic volume, higher speeds and
greater numbers of trucks. Vehicle noise is a combination of the noise produces by th engine,
exhaust, and tires. The loudness of traffic noice can also be increased by defective mufflers or
other faulty equipment on vehicles. Any condition (such as steep incline) that causes heavy
labouring of motor vehicle engines will also increase traffic noise levels. In addition, there are
other more complicated factors that affect the loudness of traffic noise.
Error during experiment
1

While taking a reading, the noise of car collide with other car. So, the reading unclear.

Take a reading during other activities was happen like construction activity.

Error on instrument like the sound level meter damage.

Human error - during read a data.

How to overcome?
1

Take an average by take a reading more than one.

Check an instrument before does the experiment.

Make sure place when do the experiment does not have other activities
