United States Canoe Association (USCA) selects Newaygo Michigan’s Muskegon River for USCA’s 2011 National Canoe & Kayak Championships
Some of the day’s catch at the Croton American Legion’s weigh in station

Chicago IL - The USCA announces the selection of Newaygo Michigan’s Muskegon River as the site for its Canoe and Kayak National Championship for 2011. “The Newaygo team made an outstanding presentation and won the bid by a sizable margin,” stated Gareth Stevens, Chair of the Publications and Marketing Committees at USCA. “The USCA looks forward to helping make the Newaygo Nationals in 2011 on the Muskegon River a success to remember.” Martin Ecker, a Muskegon Michigan based expert paddler and Race Organizer for the 2011 event, was delighted with the outcome: “Newaygo was successful at winning the bid because of true teamwork. Between the people at Pure Michigan, the Newaygo Chamber of Commerce, and Powers Outdoors (the local sponsor), the delegates felt comfortable that we could handle a race of this magnitude. I am confident we can conduct a superb race on the world class Muskegon River with the support of all of the State and local organizations.” The USCA Nationals holds a major, six-day national canoe and kayak championship event every year, usually in early-to-mid August. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Reader thanks community for familyoriented events
TO THE EDITOR: The past few weeks there have been complaints about the Winter Festival in Howard City, and I am quite irritated by the comments of an uninformed few. My family and I enjoyed the winter festival. We participated in the “Family Friendly” pancake breakfast. My boys had a wonderful time on the community provided sledding hills, and I witnessed quite a few others warming themselves at the bon fire. Due to prior engagements we could not participate in the activities provided for children at the library, but we did take a shot at the hockey shoot-out over at the dentist office, put on by the Howard City Skate Park Committee. We enjoy the fact that Howard City is trying to plan family orientated activities i.e. Harvest Festival and Winter Festival. This being the first Winter Fest, I understand there may be some glitches along the way. I would like to thank the community members who take time out of their busy lives to come together to provide us with such events. Maybe if more community members would get involved with committees to better our community we could really make these festivals something to be enjoyed by all. GIna HOEzEE where every where you looked there was something to do. We were a little concerned moving back, as to what activities the community could offer our family. Well, we could not have been more wrong. My family is very pleased with everything Howard City has to offer. My wife, four children, and I took full advantage of the harvest Festival, and plan to do so again next year. We also were thoroughly pleased with the recent Winterfest Celebration. We were very fortunate that Mother Nature chose to cooperate. My children loved the sledding and we took the opportunity to create a snowman in our yard that the entire family contributed to. There seems to be a well established balance between the children’s events and an offering for the parents later. I realize that these festivals are no small undertaking. With anything that involves the entire community it requires coordination, time, and volunteers. I just wanted everyone involved to know that we appreciate it and look forward to the next community event. THE MulHOllanDs for the foundation to give Helping Hands a check for one thousand dollars plus contribute to the foundation itself. I, myself volunteered on Saturday night and was happy to see many community leaders and friends enjoying the music and having a good time chatting with acquaintances and dancing. As far as I could see, there was no degradation or humiliation of women going on anywhere in that tent. Also, last summer a pastor did come to town and had a tent revival in the lot across the street from White’s. No one “pitched a fit.” The second letter I am responding to is the one that said that the Winter Festival was not community related and the accusation that childrenand the elderly were not taken into consideration. There were children and family related activities all day long. Events included a hockey shoot, snow painting, fort building, snowflake shoot and a sliding hill. There was hot cocoa and coffee at the community bon fireprovided by the Lions Club, a pancake breakfast to support the new skate park and a snow mobile poker run. I hear that next year the committee is adding frozen chicken bowling and a fish shanty race. If these aren’t family events, I don’t know what is. From what I understand, the Senior Center was asked to participate with a Euchre tournament and they declined. They could have had a band during the day with dancing or something. Maybe offered a place for people enjoying the festival to come in and warm up during the day on Saturday. They chose not to participate. If individuals and organizations don’t want to volunteer their time to help to make the town a better place than others can only do the best they can. The groups that put on the Harvest Festival, the Winter Festival and the Tree Lighting Ceremony aresmall and work hard because they care about this community. My advice is to stop thinking bad thoughts about our town and get busy trying to make it better. JOlEnE MIcHaEls

Harvest Fest committee member Former Town council Member, former planning commissioner Editor’s note: The letters published in the River Valley Record Enterprise do not reflect the overall opinion of the paper. Letters to the editor may be written by any member of the community who wishes to express their view of a certain issue. Letters should be in good taste and no longer than 500 words.

Reader: You had to be there
TO THE EDITOR: As President of the Montcalm County Panhandle Area Chamber of Commerce, and after hearing of the results of the event, from Board Member Mark Stevens and Executive Director Marianne Shepard, at our monthly board meeting I feel the responsibility to report to the community, to say ‘thank you’ to the dozens of volunteers that put on a really great community event. For the first annual Winterfest there were 41 snowmobiles, with very little snow, that took part in a fun run. No less than 40 people were involved in a Eucher tournament. The Sliding hill had a large group of youngsters laughing and playing. One of the kids, I understand, is already suggesting improvements for next year’s sliding hill. The fort building at the Library was a huge success along with the snow painting. The “beer tent” was a hit with the adults. Friday had approximately 200 attendees and Saturday, I understand had another 600 people. One of the best parts of the beer tent is that a portion of the profits will be donated to Helping Hands. Our deepest thanks to Lattitudes and Miller Lite for helping such a great cause. The final results

Reader unhappy with paper, criticism
TO THE EDITOR: This letter is written in response to the criticisms published in the paper over the last couple of weeks by persons who may not be aware of what really happened at the entertainment tent presented by Latitudes Roadhouse or what was offered to attendees at the first Winter Fest. First of all, I am questioning why The River Valley Shopper would publish a letter, criticizing a charity event put on by a local organization, from a citizen who was out of state on vacation at the time the event happened. The entertainment tent is a popular fund raiser for The Field of Dreams Foundation which Latitudes sponsors and supports. The tent brought in enough money

Readers are glad to be back in the area
TO THE EDITOR: To the River Valley Shopper editor and the coordinators of Winterfest, My family and I recently reestablished ourselves in the Howard City area. We relocated here from the Traverse City area,

Last year over 700 women, men and children of all ages joined us for the lively day of fun-filled activities. “We are thrilled to have this exciting Day of Dance and other health related activities for our community—previous participants have included all ages from just a few weeks old to people in their 90s. EVENT: Grant Christian School hosted their fifth annual Daddy Donut Day for preschool families on Thursday, Jan. 21. Besides enjoying a good selection of donuts and a healthy glass of chocolate milk, dads experienced the day in the life of their preschool learner. Donut projects, feet measuring and comparing, shaving faces, Bible story time, and other fun activities filled the time. Preschoolers were treated to a special family connection when four generations of “Frey Guys” joined the day! Great grandpa Loren Frey, Grandpa Jack Frey, Daddy Tom Frey, and student Luke Frey rounded out the quad.

SUPER DRUNK ON HALLOWEEN?
The new “Super Drunk” law makes it a crime to drive with a blood alcohol content of .17 or greater. Under the “Super Drunk” law a driver’s blood alcohol level of .17 means installing an alcohol-testing ignition device in your car in order to drive. This new law is effective on Halloween, 2010. FIRST TIME PENALTIES ARE STIFF. A one-year license modification. The first 45 days absolutely no driving. The Secretary of State can return the license for the next 320 days, restricted driving, but only after an ignition device (called a BAIID) is installed. Fines go up to a maximum of $700.00. Potential jail time is increased from 93 days to as much as 180 days. Mandatory attendance in a one-year alcohol treatment program. A first offender who later violates the driving restrictions, or attempts to operate a vehicle with a 0.025 blood alcohol level gets twice the penalties. Offenders get a new 45 day period of no driving, followed by 320 days of restricted driving with the BAIID. On a long trip the driver must test about twice every hour. If it detects an alcohol level of greater than .025, a warning signal goes off. The device reports violators to the monitoring agency. Repeat offender sanctions remain unchanged. Drunk driving has just become more costly because the BAIDD costs as much as $50 to install, more again every month to maintain, and treatment programs are not always cheap. WILL IT STOP DRUNK DRIVERS? Our courts already have the option to require a BAIDD as a condition of being bonded. And, drunk drivers often know to plead to a lesser offense on their first charge if they are given the chance – impaired driving. But if pleas aren’t offered or taken, there will be more drunk driving trials for drivers to fight the accuracy of the BAIIDs readings. Which will end up costing the public more money. So several Michigan drunk driving attorneys are questioning whether the Super Drunk law is Super Good for Michigan after all. Time will tell.

Meet Sparky - An energetic Shepherd/Hound mix who’s looking for a new home! She’s just one of the many dogs and cats available for adoption at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter. Sparky was picked up as a stray without a collar on February 11, and she’s about 40 lbs., and 7 months old. This friendly energetic dog has a black & tan coat of fur, and her shelter ID# is 10/02/20. Sparky has been started on her vaccinations (all except rabies) but will need a booster shot from a vet after adoption. Many other dogs besides Sparky are available to be adopted, and plenty of cats too! Go online to

www.petfinder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
for a full list of adoptable animals.
There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is “fixed” already. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open to the public Monday thru Friday from 12:30pm to 5pm. Call 989-831-7355 or 616-225-7355 for more information. New animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for!

To insure that you have a healthy baby there are some important things to know before you get pregnant and during the pregnancy. Six months prior to getting pregnant both parents should be doing some things to prepare. Supplements high in natural Vitamin B from Alfalfa and DHA from Omega 3 fish oil are crucial for normal brain development in the fetus. Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and soda pop are very important because these are dehydrating to the system. When the body of the pregnant Mom becomes chronically dehydrated she begins to develop Adrenal fatigue. At the third trimester, the fetal adrenal glands start working to the point where they begin to supply Adrenal hormones to the Mom. She begins to feel really good for the remainder of the pregnancy. After the baby is born, the mother again begins to experience adrenal fatigue causing depression, fatigue, irritability. The baby meanwhile is now over producing adrenaline for its little body size and begins having sleep issues, as well as heart and gastrointestinal problems. In his book, The Power of Sound, Dr. Joshua Leeds, gives remarkable information on how sound and the things we say around the pregnant mom influences the baby after the fourth month. Exposure to classical music has been shown to enhance brain development and actually will later improve the child’s ability to perform math and logical reasoning. Good nutrition, natural vitamins, omega 3 fish oil, adequate sunshine, right amount of water, and exercise are all very important for the development of a healthy baby. A little planning and a few changes can dramatically improve the health of your baby and greatly reduce the chances for birth defects and other health risks. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands.
