allowing closer cutting with less scalloping. Cutterbed Removal of Disc Spindle Assembly. Each gear assembly and adjacent idler gears can be individually removed and serviced. Removal of Idler Gear. 3 . This design allows each gear and idler to be serviced individually. without complete disassembly of the cutterbed.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS CUTTERBED Spur Gear Cutterbed The cutterbed is a spur gear design. The spur gear design allows the cutterbed profile to be thinner. reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

Cutterbed Gears Drive Gear and Shaft The cutterbed gears have heavy duty. Cutterbed Gears Disc Drive The disc drive splined shaft will shear outside of the cutterbed rather than to damage gear teeth inside the cutterbed in the event an immovable obstruction is struck in the field. This feature saves downtime and reduces repair expenses. This in turn reduces the owners operating expense. The cutterbed gears have shaved. for long life and trouble-free operation. improving the load carrying capacity of the gears. providing quieter and smoother running gears.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Sealed Bearings Both drive gear bearings and idler bearings are pre-lubricated and sealed. but also seals any contamination out of the bearings. which is a highergrade finish than on standard gears. 4 Gears . pull out and replace the sheared spindle assembly. This not only seals the lubrication in. just the tooth contact area of the gears. which reduces our power requirement significantly. The shaving process reduces the possibility of cutterbed contamination. and allows the teeth to mesh better. wide profile teeth. The wide profile increases the gear-to-gear tooth contact area. wide profile teeth. we can use a lower volume of oil. giving higher load carrying capacity and smoother operation. Instead of having to replace all the gears and bearings in the cutterbed. Since we are not lubricating cutterbed bearings with the cutterbed oil. the operator can quickly remove the disc. The gear teeth are “shaved”. This dramatically reduces maintenance expense in the event there is a problem in the cutterbed. then replace the disc and be quickly back in the field mowing.

which extends the life of a cutterbed. Keeping the cutterbed rigid saves downtime by prolonging component life. The amount of air turbulence directed forward is reduced. New Cage Crop Conveyor Cutterbed Frame The cutterbed is set into a “cradle” (1) which helps keep the cutterbed from twisting or flexing. maintaining high output in all crop conditions. and maintains smooth crop flow in heavy crop. Cradle Spiral Helper Roll (PTD12. The helper roll helps improve cutoff in light crop conditions. The cage crop conveyors smoothly move crop to the conditioner opening. which improves cutoff in light crop conditions. Preventing twisting and flexing reduces wear on gear teeth and bearings. and the 110” conditioner roll opening by a rotating cage at each end of the cutterbed.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Cage Crop Converyor The crop is conveyed from the edge of the cutterbed to the helper roll. These cage crop conveyors also help prevent crop from wrapping the cutterbed driveshaft. PTD15) The helper roll (Turbulence Reduction Roll) lifts the crop from the cutterbed to the conditioner rolls. Turbulence Reduction Roll 5 . improving machine versatility. The helper roll allows the conditioner rolls to be moved back away from the cutterbed.

and a steel bottom roller. Rubber on Steel Steel on Steel Rolls The steel on steel rolls offer a similar crimping action to the rubber on steel rolls. so a precise roll gap can be set and maintained. so the appropriate roll can be chosen for each situation. The steel roll is machined and balanced. The steel on steel rolls are designed for the custom operator. but to not crush the leaves. The PTD12 is offered with rubber on steel. for good windrow consistency. for reduced leaf loss. Steel on Steel 6 . steel on steel. The PTD15 is offered with the steel on steel rolls only. Challenger offers more selection of conditioner rolls than any other manufacturer. Rubber on Steel Rolls The rubber on steel rolls feature engaging rolls with a rubber top roll.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Conditioner Rolls Challenger offers three types of conditioner rolls. The PTD10 is offered with rubber on steel or TiCor™ rolls. or a high usage machine where rubber roll wear would be an issue. The rolls crimp the crop along its entire length. or TiCor™ rolls.

110 Inch Conditioner Rolls 7 . TiCor™ conditioner rolls are made from reinforced rubber tire cores that are stacked and compressed on the conditioner roll shaft. and minimizes vibration for extended machine life. it lowers the conditioning effectiveness and the covering eventually peels off causing imbalance and vibration The tight machining tolerances of the TiCor™ roll production process ensures even conditioning because of a precise consistent roll gap (3). TiCor™ conditioning rolls provide gentle. the better the nutrition content of the hay. each individual crop stem can be conditioned more uniformly. deep lugged rolls. so more thorough conditioning can be done. Once the rubber or urethane covering “chunks out”. With TiCor™ conditioning rolls. This greater speed differential in other manufacturers rolls can cause stripping and loss of crop leaves. even in the heaviest crop conditions. we can thoroughly condition the crop stem without increased leaf loss. Since the crop mat is thinner. The solid TiCor™ rubber construction allows the rolls to absorb shocks from rocks or foreign objects without being punctured or damaged. consistent conditioning and long life. TiCor™ Rolls Intermeshing Roll Comparision 110-Inch Conditioner Rolls The 110-inch wide conditioner rolls allow the crop mat to be spread out. The more crop leaves kept in the hay. The lugs are shallower on TiCor™ conditioning rolls which means the speed differential between the “lug” (2) of one roll and the “valley” (1) of the other is less than the speed differential in rubber or urethane covered. spiral-cut. The wide rolls condition the crop more uniformly and thoroughly. Rubber or urethane covered steel rolls are much more susceptible to damage.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS TiCor™ Rolls The inter-meshing. increasing the total value of the crop.

No longer does the operator need to stop the tractor and raise the header to eliminate a plug. Kevlar™ is also the material used in bullet-proof vests and composite army helmets. Note: Shields are removed to show belts and gearcase Conditioner Drive Conditioner Roll Pressure Release The conditioner roll tension linkage utilizes an over center cam that allows the rolls to open when an obstacle or clump of hay is encountered in the field. The belts are reinforced with Kevlar™ fiber for extra strength and longer life.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Conditioner Drive (PTD12. The roll tension release system allows the potential plug to be expelled without stopping. directly drive the conditioner rolls through u-joint drive shafts. Roll Tension Release Roll Tension Roll Tension Cam 8 . running in oil. PTD15) Enclosed spur gears. The over center cam will automatically reset the tension after the obstruction has passed through the conditioner rolls. enhancing productivity. Four matched HA-section belts power this conditioner drive gearcase.

Conditioner Panel Adjustment 9 . other crop. and the conditioning panel. This rubbing action removes the waxy outer layer from the plant. To reduce the conditioning action even more. The rotor speed is set at 722 rpm. and placed on top of the panel.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Spoke Conditioner The spoke conditioner conditions crop by the spoke rotor moving the crop past an adjustable conditioning panel. The picture shows the panel in the down position. To reduce the conditioning action. the channel at the bottom of the panel can be taken off. The spoke conditioner has 74 free swinging spokes attached to a rotor. Spoke Conditioner Panel Conditioning Panel Adjustment The conditioning panel is adjusted by moving the panel adjustment lever. which provides the most aggressive conditioning. located under the right side hinged shield. The rotor speed can be sped up to 1030 rpm by installing an optional speed-up kit. Spoke Conditioner Conditioning Panel The conditioning action can be changed by moving a conditioning panel over the spoke conditioner. allowing moisture to be released quickly. the panel can be adjusted to the up position. The crop rubs against the tines.

To reduce the conditioning action even more.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Conditioning Panel Up Crop conditioning is achieved by the tines and conditioner panel scuffing the crop stems. The conditioning action can be changed by moving a conditioning panel over the spoke conditioner. rubbing the protective wax coating off. which would provide more aggressive conditioning. allowing stem moisture to be released quickly. To reduce the conditioning action. The high speed conditioner kit provides additional aggressive conditioning by increasing the rotor speed from 722 rpm to 1030 rpm. the panel can be adjusted to the up position. the channel at the bottom of the panel can be taken off. Adjusting the swathboard up diverts the crop flow into the forming shields. Spoke Conditioner Conditioning Panel Down The panel in the down position forces the crop deeper into the conditioner tines. Swathboard Swathboard Adjustment 10 . and placed on top of the panel. Swathboard Spoke Conditioner Panel The swathboard is adjusted up or down with the swathboard adjustment knob which is located on the left side of the machine.

Transport Lock Header Lift Lockout The header can be locked in the “up” position for transport or machine maintenance. Frame Hydraulic Transport Lock The tongue swing can be locked into position for roading. which means that the frame pushes the header through the field. The lock can be easily engaged or disengaged by the stroke of a single lever at the rear of the machine. Pushing the header allows it to follow the ground contours better. reducing the possibility of the header digging into the ground. Ease of use will encourage the operator to use this function even when doing quick maintenance or checks. A single lever shuts off the oil flow both into and out of the tongue swing cylinder. A lockout valve is located on each of the two header lift cylinders.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Mainframe Heavy Duty Frame The heavy-duty frame allows the header to be suspended like a self-propelled header. Lift Lock 11 .

Reduced soil compaction promotes quicker crop regrowth. The PTD15 tires are 31 x 13.S. Transport Lighting 12 . PTD12 Tires Transport Lighting The PTD series of disc mower conditioners meets the latest A. There are also enhanced taillights with retroreflective (Red-Orange) reflectors using “cube corner microprismatic element” technology. The warning flashers are rubber mounted to swing away and reset when hit by an obstruction.

The flotation is accomplished by two springs on each side of the machine. The forming shields can be set to build a windrow any way the operator desires. Windrow Forming Shields 13 . Good flotation also reduces damage when an obstruction is encountered. The magnets make latching easy and secure. Magnetic Curtain Catches Forming Shields The forming shields can be set to the operator’s preference. Machine life is extended. so crop can be harvested with minimum delay. and fields are kept better looking. quick drying windrow. PTD15 Flotation Springs Cutterbed Shield Curtains The cutterbed shield curtains are held together with magnetic catches. but are easily unlatched for quick cutterbed access. The catches hold the curtains together. reducing scalloping on uneven ground.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Header Header Flotation The header can float both radially and vertically. so it hugs the contours. to keep material from flying between the curtains. The cutterbed shield curtains held together with magnetic catches form a ring around the cutterbed reducing the possibility that objects will be thrown out. The multiple springs provide a much more responsive flotation system than those with a single spring on each side. fluffy. The adjustable rear deflector shield slows crop momentum to allow it to fall gently into a tall.

The operator can choose the windrow or swath width that is right for a particular area or crop. for greater machine versatility. In some high humidity areas. The swath shield can be quickly and easily set to any position from narrow windrow to full width swath.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Header Swath Shield The swath shield adjustment can be made with minimal effort and no tools. laying out a wide swath speeds curing better than windrows. Swathboard 14 .

A field installed hydraulic header tilt kit is available as an option. A steeper angle can be used when cutting down or rank crop. PTD12) The header tilt is controlled by a turnbuckle that regulates the header angle from 0° up to 6°. The 8” wide skid shoes provide better flotation and longer wear life for reduced maintenance costs. In the steeper cutting angles. a 0° to 4° header tilt angle is used. of metal to protect the cutterbed from wear or damage. 0° tilt would result in a 3” cut when the header is let all the way down. the cut will be wavier. Skid Shoes Manual Header Tilt Hydraulic Header Tilt (Standard on PTD15 Optional on PTD12) The header tilt is controlled by the operator using a dual acting remote control valve. Header Tilt 15 . Hyd.3” cut.in. The header tilt allows the operator to change the knife angle and cutting height to better match field conditions for increased performance. and the possibility of streaking will increase. Wide skid shoes give a longer wear life. a field installed selector valve kit is available as an option. If the tractor only has two valves. Header Tilt (PTD10. For normal operation. 6° tilt would result in a 1.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Skid Shoes Each of the 8 disc cutting units has a skid shoe that provides 140 sq. and do a better job of floating the cutterbar on soft or damp ground. The hydraulic header tilt allows the operator to change the knife angle and cutting height to better match field conditions for increased performance. The header tilt also controls the height of cut. A tractor with three remote control valves is required.

PTD15) The “Center Pivot Design” allows the operator to cut on either side of the tractor. The header can also be swung to the side. This hitch allows for tighter turns and longer life. 3-point Swivel 16 . We have the only swivel hitches that don’t pull the entire weight of the machine through the gearboxes. the left edge of the machine aligns with the left tractor tires. The tongue is pivoted with a hydraulic cylinder. The hitch is reinforced to reduce stress from “pull-through” on the swivel gearbox shaft and gears. This saves the operator time and eliminates rear tractor tire/ tongue contact during tight turns. PTD10 Center Pivot Design (PTD12. allowing the operator to steer around objects in the field. for easier transport. When in transport position. The hydraulic tongue cylinder has an orifice to make the tongue positioning more precise. This hitch allows shorter turns than are possible with a constant velocity driveline. This ability increases the operator and machine productivity. and reduced maintenance expense compared to other manufacturers swivel hitches. making longer windrows than cutting in a continually smaller circle like is usually done with side tongue machines.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Header Drives Side Pivot Tongue (PTD10) The PTD10 has an L-frame design. which incorporates a side pivot tongue. The hydraulic tongue swing allows the machine to easily move from road to field position. Steering 3-Point Swivel Hitch (PTD12. PTD15) The 3-Point swivel hitch attaches to the bottom links of the tractor 3-Point lift.

This system will undoubtedly require less maintenance than other manufacturers “pull-through” designs. and bearings is thus reduced. Cutterbed Drive 17 . It easily slides over the drawbar of the tractor rather than having to hook to the tractor 3-Point Lift arms. A nomaintenance slip clutch and overrunning clutch protect the drive components and the tractor PTO. A steering arm connecting the gearbox to the tongue keeps the gearbox and driveline in line with the tongue. the helper roll. The stress and flex on the gearbox swivel shaft. This is an efficient design with a Kevlar™ reinforced powerband. Header Pivot Gearbox Cutterbed Drive The power output of the Header Pivot Gearbox drives a 2B-powerband belt. which reduces wear on the driveshaft u-joints. This system reduces the number and size of u-joints needed in the drive system. PTD15) The header mounted gearbox swivels as the tongue is rotated. Drawbar Swivel Hitch Header Pivot Gearbox (PTD12. and conditioner rolls through a matched set of belts.FEATURES AND BENEFITS PTD SERIES DISC MOWER CONDITIONERS Drawbar Swivel Hitch (PTD12 Only) The drawbar swivel hitch allows the same tight turning as the 3-Point hitch but with easier hookup. This is the only drawbar swivel hitch on a center pivot disc machine that doesn’t pull all the weight of the machine through the gearboxes. This belt drives a gearbox that directly drives the cutterbed through a u-joint driveshaft. gears. This material gives the powerband a very long life for reduced maintenance expense for the owner.
