Analysis of different types of motor cars

Introduction
This is some of data sample collected from a particular kind of manner to
analyze most demanding motor cars in a large sale which facilitate to
manufacturers forecast their future growth of production.
This collection would be categorized mainly in terms of their performance
related features rather than physical features such as number of cylinders
in the engine, mode of gear type, speed limit and so on.
The research is basically done under following variables,
I.

In this data set, it is included normal, luxury and super luxury cars with
their special features. And also same type of cars related to several
manufactures and has different features and performance. In here some
design engineers, data analysts, technical managers and such kind of
personnel have been involved for this survey to get data set.
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives have to be achieved by doing this particular
research. They are,
Get an idea about types of cars of different manufacturers
How engine capacity affect to the speed of the car
What is the most favorable and effective fuel type?
What is the frequently used of most suitable drive system?

Methodology
In order to analyze data basic statistical techniques has been used in here.
Pictorial representation methods such as bar charts & pie charts as well as
descriptive statistical methods such as mean, mode has been used to analyze the
given data set in order to clearly distinguish the significant aspects of the data set.
For comprehensive analysis of data in an effective way two main methods have
been used in here to present data. Theyre,

Tabular format of data representation

Tabular format means presenting information in rows and columns, rather than
paragraphs, to break down specific data into a quickly scannable layout. In this
case present information or data in a simple table in finding the distribution of
values for any given characteristic. One way table and two way tables are belong
to tabular format.
E.g.: One way table

Pictorial methods of data representation

The purpose of a picture is to display the general features and the patterns of the
data. The pictorial methods of data representation used to analyze the data
throughout this report are simple bar charts, component bar charts, multiple bar
charts, pie charts and percentage component bar charts.

Bar charts
A bar chart or bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with lengths proportional
to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or
horizontally. One axis of the chart shows the specific categories being compared,
and the other axis represents a discrete value.
There are different kinds of bar charts that can be used in representing data in a
most suitable way such as,
Simple bar charts
Component bar charts
Percentage component bar charts
Multiple bar charts
Out of these bar charts the ones that are being used in this project are simple bar
charts, multiple bar charts and percentage component bar charts .

Simple bar charts

In simple bar charts we can use series of bars whose length of each bar are
proportional to the frequencies of each column which theyve drawn into.
E.g.: number of sold cars in ABC Company in the year of 2012

Pie charts
A pie chart (or a circle graph) is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating
numerical proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each sector (and
consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it
represents. There can be used exploded pie charts, three dimensional pie charts
& comparative pie charts to present data according to persons need. But in most
cases Pie charts can be replaced by other plots such as the bar chart.

Descriptive statistics used to summarize and analyze data

Data in large can be incomprehensible. So, reducing it to a smaller it would be
much easier to comprehensive the data in a meaningful way. The most extensively
used measures in analyzing the data set are the measures of center in descriptive
statistics. The measures of center location used to analyze the given data set are
mean and the median. In addition to that the spread of the distribution has been
analyzed using measures of dispersion. Throughout this report the most
commonly used measures of dispersion are the mean and the mode of the data
set.

Measures of center
Mean (Average Value)
Mean is average value of observations. It can be calculated using the formula
given below.
Mean = x1+x2+x3+. +xn
n

n The distinct data elements

Mode
Mode is the most frequent observation. There may be more than one mode of a
data set.

Here are set of collected data about different types of motor cars of various
manufacturers. In order to make decisions what is the market for the future
demand of motor cars, above data has to be analyze in such ways to meet the
companys main objectives & so as to fulfill customers need. Company has to be
concern about what are the most preferable & demanding brand of motor cars,
what is the most favourable gear type, what is the most efficient fuel type &
average miles per gallon in the city & the high way and so on.

Analysis of different types of motor cars

Figure 4.1 apparently depicts the most frequently used drive system is rear
wheel. Its nearly one half. Rear wheel is the majority because it is easy to
manufacture, simple, inherently robust and reliable. In here rear wheels drive the
vehicle. A rear-wheel drive vehicle also has a more equitable balance of the
vehicle's weight front-to-rear as well as rear drive vehicle can offer potentially
superior braking performance because, when the brakes are applied, the weight is
more equitably allotted among all four wheels.
Meanwhile front wheel and four wheel drive systems are also been used in
about 25% each. They also have advantages on their own. Front-wheel drive is
better because its fuel economy and enhanced space efficiency. Also it offers very
good traction on slippery surfaces at relatively lower speed. Four wheel drive
system is great for those very low-traction situations because of its capabilities in
deep snow or for serious off-roading.
So person have to be careful to choose a motor car according to the
purpose theyre going to use it for.

Figure 4.2 clearly shows that the vehicle type that been majority been used
is compact cars. Its nearly two thirds from all the vehicle types been used. And
about 20% preferred in two seaters vehicles. Minority is preferred in size station
wagons. Less than 10% are interested in small station & size station wagons.
So, the manufacturers need to increase their products of compact cars &
two seaters cars in order to match the demand in the market while accomplishing
high performance & concerning about ways to improve low cost for maintaining
the vehicle.

Its so obvious that both compact cars & two seaters cars have been using
approximately same percentage of fuel capacity in each category for their motor
cars. Even though, figure 4.3 (c) depicts two seaters cars fuel cost is much less
than compact cars fuel cost.

When discussed in terms of motor fuel, diesel is said to be more fuel

efficient, giving almost 1.5 times the fuel efficiency of petrol. But when comparing
power & RPM, people tends to use petrol rather diesel. As well, the viscosity
changes in diesel when temperature gets low. But petrol doesnt. Further the CO2
emission is much higher in diesel engines more than petrol engines .

Figure 4.3(d) depicts although the percentage of fuel cost is high in

compact cars than two seaters, the average miles per gallon is higher in compact
cars in highway & city. So assumption can be done that could be the reason
people are much prefer in using compact cars rather two seaters .

4.5 Analysis of relation of numbers of used to the performance of

the motor car
In every internal combustion engine, inside each cylinder there is a piston. Pistons
move up-down-up (to move the whole system and finally the wheels) due to gasoline
explosion, and they work in sequence. So a two cylinder engine will go 1-2-1 and so on. A
four cylinder goes 1 and 3 - 2 and 4 - 1 and 3 and so on, thus in the same time double the
power. Performance-wise, when you accelerate, a more cylinders car will reach a certain
speed faster.

Figure 4.5 Average number of cylinders vs. type of motor car

Figure 4.5 illustrates that large cars needs higher number of cylinders in a motor
car.Reason for this could be that large number of cylinders needs to give much more high
power to the motor cars. So that large cars might be need relatively high numbers of
cylinders in order to supply the power it needs to give higher performance of the motor
car. So that when manufacturing brand new larger car types manufacturers need to
include extra cylinders in order to fulfill the market demand. Also, the number of cylinders
affects the smoothness with which the engine delivers its power. So, its much better to
use large number of cylinders. Besides, the more cylinders the more life-time an engine
will have, because the pressure is shared.

4.6 Analysis of frequently used Transmission type

The transmission is a device that is connected to the back of the engine. It
transmits mechanical power from the engine to the drive wheels. The transmission
is used to reduce the revolutions of the crankshaft down to a reasonable value by
using interlocking gears to reduce the number of revolutions. By doing so, it
makes more effective usage of the engine's torque and helps to keep the engine
operating at an appropriate speed.

Figure 4.6 analyses of gear types

Manual transmission doesnt need as much maintenance as automatics and

when they do, the repair costs are much cheaper. Eventhough auto transmission
has some disadvantages, according to the data setthis picture depicts majority of
people preferred in auto gear type rather manual gear type. Because using auto
gear type is much easier when comparing manual gear type. An automatic
transmission changes the gear ratios automatically, thus relieving the driver from
having to shift gears manually and stepping on the clutch while shifting. The more
gears the transmission has, the smoother the acceleration of the vehicle. So,
manufacturer can assume that they need to concentrate on increase their product
of auto type relative to the manual gear type.

Figure 4.8 Analyses of no. of valves vs. fuel cost

A large number of valve engine has better breathing and can operate at
higher revolutions per minute (RPM) than a few number of valve engine,
delivering more power. Hence it consume significantly large amount of fuel
incurring huge operating cost.

manufacturers Volkswagen cars are major (31.25%) in the sale. As a result of that
that manufacturer can predict their coming year turn out.

General Discussion

University of Colombo

19

Analysis of different types of motor cars

According to the given data sample of most popular luxury and normal cars
in a sale reasonable analysis has been done to get a correct conclusion in different
ways and means. Analysis has been done by comparing various types of data sets
to have a reasonable and fair logic in real world situation which are related to the
performance of the motor cars. By using common statistical techniques such as
bar chart, pie chart, etc analysis data is presented in clarity way in this
assignment.
By referring to the figure 4.1 it is clearly show most demanding motor cars
have rear wheel drive system because of its own advantage in its performance
and reliability. It is almost 50 percent of total number of motor cars. Lots of
people use motor cars for their day to day jobs rather than special events like
racing or off road driving. Hence majority number of motor cars sold here is rear
wheel drive system cars.
As per the figure 4.2 it depicts that compact cars are mostly sold cars and it
is about tow third of total number. Because these cars are passenger type and
easy to drive, lower price and need less space for parking. Next most sold one is
two seater cars And Station wagons have evolved from their early use as
specialized vehicles to carry people and luggage to and from train station. Hence
they are not popular in daily usage.
In considering compact and two seater cars they use petrol as their fuel
type in almost same percentage as it clearly shown in figure 4.3 (a) and (b). But it
has significant contrast between fuel costs. Perhaps this is because tow seater
cars are normally facilitate for light loads and small in size. Hence it consumes
very few amount of fuel as shown in figure 4.3 (c). More significantly compact
cars have very good fuel efficiency in city and highway. For this reason compact
cars are most sold one.
And as well as Volkswagen and Mercedes-benz manufacturers have
produced most sold cars in this sale. Actually larger cars have much more
cylinders in the engine to supply high power rather than other types. But two
seater and compact cars need less number of cylinders when consider its light
small structure.
